Hey all, just a quick rec for a film I think several of you might enjoy: Tru Loved, a teen comedy-drama about a straight girl with gay parents dealing with a new school in the suburbs after moving out of San Francisco. It has a few slightly heavy-handed moments, but on the whole it's funny and real and gets a whole lot of points from me for featuring a happy gay couple, a happy (and mixed race!) lesbian couple, generally happy & well-adjusted kids with non-traditional family arrangements, and for addressing a variety of stereotypes and managing to get its message across while also telling an entertaining story.
Recommended for anyone, really, but especially if you're a fan of happy queer-themed stories.
Also, Uhura from old school Star Trek plays a secondary character, and Sue Sylvester from Glee has a small part.

Firefly fans: If you haven't already seen it, I believe this clip from last week's Castle will be relevant to your interests.
...And in the same episode, the man uses a dremel to carve a pumpkin. :D
Pixar grants girl's dying wish, makes entire internet cry.
Look, the link text pretty much sums up my feelings here. Occasionally people actually don't suck?
STEPHEN COLBERT WEAR EYE PROTECTION YOU MORON. (I STILL LOVE YOU BUT SERIOUSLY MAN THAT'S BAD NEWS.)
ETA: Extreme shepherding. Look, I don't even know, it's less than three minutes, just go watch it. Trust me, it's worth it.
Bwua! "THe College of William and Mary will open at 12:00 today. All morning classes and activities are cancelled. "
Which is awesome because I have barely slept at all because it started snowing again around 3 and I kept waking up and IT IS STILL SNOWING :D :D :D
ETA: "The College of William and Mary will remain closed for the rest of the day as the weather is continuing to worsen. Please check you email for updates."
Which doesn't really matter because my class is already cancelled, but.

First Night was good. I love getting paid what worked out to over $29 an hour for basically sitting and listening to music. There was plenty of actual work during prep and strike, but the 6.5 hours during the performances were incredibly laid back. Crawling around in the beams in the dark to fix things during one of the performances was pretty exciting, too, but mostly it was just sitting.
I feel extra rich right now because I'd completely forgotten that the school still owed me a paycheck from the beginning of December, so that $100 seems like an unexpected bonus.
Also, I am a champion at Tim's puzzle box, and Tim drunk is one of the best things ever.
I don't really do New Year's resolutions, but here's to figuring out what to do with myself, graduating, and making a clean break for something new.

Dievs, svētī Latviju, Mūs' dārgo tēviju, Svētī jel Latviju, Ak, svētī jel to!

...Is anyone else watching the Daily Show right now? (I'm sure it's been on Serious News too, but.)
Palin didn't know Africa is a continent? She couldn't name all the countries in North America?
I. just. I can't stop doing the fish-face open-close mouth thing. They let this person run for vice president? I. just. I don't even know what else to say.

I never thought I'd say this, but tonight I am proud of Virginia and the majority of this country. Virginia. Virginia.
Congratulations, President Obama.
Words cannot express, but the cheering and screaming and firecrackers out in the courtyard, and the face-splitting grin I've been wearing since 11 pm, that's a start.
Current Mood: jubilant

Pennsylvania and Ohio are both being called for Obama, and Virginia's getting closer and closer as more precincts report. :D :D :D
!!!!
Also, ARIZONA is too close to call and that is hilarious and wonderful.
EDIT 9:59: OBAMA LEADING IN VIRGINIA WITH 81% REPORTING :D :D :D
EDIT 10:24: OBAMA'S UP BY CLOSE TO 40,000 IN VIRGINIA :D :D :D
EDIT 10:56: Well, John Stewart just called Virginia for Obama. (And gave a shout-out to William & Mary, go Tribe!) :D :D :D

GO VOTE if you haven't already.
These shows are going to kiiiill me. I thought I could swing this massive A&C set last night, but now I'm not so sure.
This is so incredibly epic. It's History and Change and I am hopeful if not confident; regardless of what happens, the world is going to look different come tomorrow morning*. And Virginia! Maybe, maybe Virginia will go for Obama, and then I will be proud of this state for pretty much the first time ever.
The fact that there are people standing in line in the rain for over an hour in order to vote makes my heart swell. One of my professors said he showed up at his polling place at 6:05 this morning and there were some 300 people in line ahead of him.
*Or afternoon, or Thursday, or whenever the hell they have a solid outcome. :P

I suspect (hope?) that this is basically preaching to the choir here. Nevertheless.
Palin & aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska. (~1 minute.)
LGBT Alaskans on Palin. (~5 minutes.) Particularly worth looking at given her comments last night about her "gay friends" and her claim of supporting visitation rights, etc.
Just a reminder, Monday is the deadline for voter registration in Virginia.
Guys. Guys. If you have ever seen and enjoyed Firefly, Buffy (especially the musical episode), Angel, or any silly thing involving supervillains, singing, and/or laundromats, go watch this right now:Doctor Horrible!
So there's this show on the enviro-hippy network called Living With Ed, specifically Ed Begley who's an actor and also a major eco-hippy. It basically consists of him putting in new green things while his wife flips out because she thinks they're ugly, his wife putting in new pretty things while he flips out because they're wasteful, and the occasional field trip to other people's green houses so Ed can feel inadequate.
The best part? Bill Nye (the science guy!) lives down the street from them and stalks Ed and tries to outdo his green projects. I am not making this up. It's all delightfully lol-tastic. (Also makes me want to be Ed when I grow up, but that's serious and this is all about the lols, so.)
Also, this channel has a commercial with a naked chick talking about how much energy we could save if we wore less clothing so we wouldn't have to run the air conditioning as much.
Basically, it's a bunch of environmentally friendly information that's also hilarious. Win all around.
Assorted links!
From cuteoverload:
Video of someone playing with a ktten. Volume up, you can hear it purring, especially towards the end.
Ultimate cat-on-rack? Also, ow, if that kitten gets unhappy there.
So we've got all this nuclear waste that's still going to be dangerous in 10,000 years, which is longer than any civilization has lasted so far. Interesting article about how to warn people away from it in The Future.
ITALIAN UNICORN deer. Not kidding. Morgan, I expect you to find this and frolic with it.
And from that old dodgy-news-standby, the BBC:
Romanian village elects dead mayor. Not sure how this compares to dead voters back in the day, but, uh.
Actual snail mail. With real snails. I am not making this up.
Space cameras to monitor forests. Not actually funny except for the SPACE CAMERAS part, but pretty cool nonetheless.
Not sure how I feel about this one, but it's definitely interesting. Scans see 'gay brain differences'. Basically they're saying that there are similarities between the brains of gay men & straight women, and between gay women & straight men. Which seems reasonable, except I really want more information about what they get for people who identify as any degree of bisexual... On the one hand, this sort of thing is good ammunition against the whackos who think gay people can be "cured", although I kind of doubt those types will really listen to science anyway. On the other hand, it seems to be reinforcing the idea of sexuality as a switch with only two options, which is just not true. ...For that matter, I wonder what they get for asexuals.
Mmm, tv. Galactica spec behind the cut. Spoilers for everything that's been aired, especially the trailer for tonight's episode, and a Thing I Heard On the Internet which may or may not be accurate. ( Frak me!Collapse )
I think it's time for another one of those anon meme things.
Anything you want, in comments, anonymously - or not, if you're so inclined.
Go.
The e/æ alternation in Latvian is like polydactyly in humans. The weird case is actually more common than the "regular" case. I'm pretty sure this is significant. But I don't know what it means.
This message brought to you by 4:30 am and way too much OT.
