Blocking Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a multifunctional cytokine with pro-inflammatory properties has demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in inflammatory diseases like Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE and multiple sclerosis. Host immune response, the underlying cause for this progressive disease is targeted by Host modulatory therapy (HMT), an emerging treatment modality. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ώ 3 PUFAs), one of the relatively safe HMTs, reduces tissue destruction, stabilizes or even regenerates the periodontium through its anti-inflammatory & immunoregulatory properties. ώ 3 PUFAs are essential for the synthesis of eicosanoids which are involved in anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet aggregatory, vasodilation, vasoconstriction, immune response, cell growth and proliferation. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its association with pregnancy outcome.Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted among 150 antenatal women from October 2014 to April 2015. Data containing socio-demographic details, vitamin D level, serum calcium, pregnancy complications and growth situation of newborns were collected and analyzed.Results: A total 150 pregnant women participated in the study, 75.3% were vitamin D deficient, 22.1% vitamin D insufficient and 2.6% normal. There was no significant adverse maternal outcome. NICU admission was required in 28.3 and 15.2% in the vitamin D deficient and insufficient groups respectively.Conclusions: Women from different socioeconomic status, irrespective of parity and educational levels had vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. Introduction Measured total carbon dioxide (TCO2) from venous sample and calculated bicarbonate f... more Introduction Measured total carbon dioxide (TCO2) from venous sample and calculated bicarbonate from arterial blood gas (ABG) have shown good agreement in some studies, while conflicting results have been obtained in few other studies. The objective of this study is to compare and assess the degree of agreement between the measured TCO2 and calculated bicarbonate and also whether they can be used interchangeably in our laboratory. Materials and methods We prospectively analyzed 89 ABG samples requested for calculated bicarbonate and then measured TCO2 from venous blood samples drawn simultaneously from the same participants between November 2016 and April 2017. Results Measured TCO2 results ranged from 5.7 to 39.9 mmol/L (mean 23.45 mmol/L), while calculated bicarbonate ranged from 9 to 40 mmol/L (mean 24.36 mmol/L). The values of TCO2 and bicarbonate correlated well (r = 0.95, p < 0.001), with the correlation given by the equation, y = 0.884x + 3.605. The bias obtained was —0.9 ...
