The revolution in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has generated an innovating process in the agri-food sector that is far from being unwind. The wine industry is a case in point. Indeed, the industry has attempted to address the multifaceted challenges posed by electronic commerce since always. Business to business electronic commerce has been slower to develop than its counterpart, i.e. business to consumer E-commerce. However business to business e-commerce is starting to attract an increased interest, by showing a significant business value in terms of potential. Against this background, the slow development of B2B e-commerce has been linked to regulatory and economic reasons. In order to deal with such stumbling blocks, the paper suggests a shift towards an open platform that is aimed at facilitating transactions and interactions among businesses through a continuous problem-solving process in which trust and value is co-created by producers and customers through relational contracting.

The voluntary certification system is aimed at adding value to products, while differentiating it on the related market. The paper presents the preliminary results of a work-in-progress research on the voluntary certification schemes in the Italian wine sector. Through a case-study analysis, the paper is aimed at highlighting the emerging implementation issues. The scope of the case-studies is limited to three voluntary certification schemes, which underlie similarities with the organic wine farming and operate at business-to-consumer level. The paper is divided in three parts. Part I will examine the relevant legal framework on wine quality standards, by framing the legislation in mandatory, regulatory and voluntary. Part II will consider three case-studies of voluntary certification schemes that are implemented in the Italian wine sector. Part III will analyse the emerging issues that arise from the analysis of the case-studies. In conclusion, the paper highlights the key challenge, which concerns finding a trade-off between consumer protection and the promotion of free trade in an openly competitive market.

It aims to gather knowledge thatcontributes to the formulation of recommendations for future policies relevant to EU ruralareas, by creating a science-society-policy interface which provides a hub for knowledge andpolicy. This synthesis gathers the main elements related to the objectives, topics, activities, and impacts that are targeted by the MAPs. Based upon each of the initial DAPs of the 20 MAPs, the current synthesis represents a snapshot of the ongoing establishment and planning processes.

The significance of these questions places the food wastage issue to the attention of the institutions, civil society and academia. International and EU documents widely discuss the role of some legal disciplines in the generation of wastage, both as a direct cause and as a mean for its reduction. So far, the majority of public and private interventions in Europe focused on the distribution and consumption segment of the food supply chain, while a lack of reduction measures is registered in the previous segments. Nevertheless, the European Commission estimates that the food waste attributable to industrial processing is around 39%. The paper is aimed at analysing the EU legal framework which influences the generation of wastage during the food processing chain. It addresses the emerging legal opportunities in reducing food wastage, recognising two main areas: labelling strategies and by-products valorisation. After a synthetic exposition of the data related to food wastage (Section 1), the paper shows how in the European legislation food safety requirements and food waste reduction strategies interrelate (Section 2). The paper moves on to assess the EU legal framework on waste, in particular the definition and the potential valorisation of food by-products, (Section 3) the food labelling regulation and the contractual practices (Section 4), underlying the opportunities for food wastage reduction. In conclusion, the paper highlights the emerging legal opportunities and the related shortcomings of the potential strategies for reducing the wastage generation during the food processing chain.

The first part, the introduction, is going to show how in a short amount of time technology, combined with changes in consumer habits, has opened the door to the development of e-commerce and also to food e-commerce as a new way to trade. The paper will explore, through the observation of marketing studies, what influences a consumer to buy online instead of offline and the relevance of food information on this process. The second part will then analyze the European current legal framework applicable to the labeling requirements that should be fulfilled on prepacked food sold through e-commerce. This analysis is meant to provide an overview regarding the recognized importance of the object of the paper and the elements to figure out how existing regulation, at the European level, is not clear enough, possibly representing an obstacle for food e-commerce development. The chapter finds that the lack of clarity does not help build consumers’ trust in online sales, creating also a barrier for producers to try to use this tool to sell their products directly.

Both international political institutions and practitioners are interested in promoting digital technology, indicating and describing potential benefits and risks. Meanwhile, academics analyze the actual and possible impacts of digital technologies by using case studies. However, the extensive literature makes it challenging to derive a comprehensive synthesis of the possible impacts that digital technologies are and might generate in the rural domains. In the given context, the present work aims at contributing to the construction of a framework providing a first classification of the digital technologies’ impacts to use in both research and a political agenda.
