Archivist and Historian

I received my PhD in US religious history from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2012. Catherine L. Albanese was the chair of my committee; the dissertation focused on religious leaders' responses to prostitution in San Francisco during the years 1848-1917.

My second Master's is an MLIS in Archives Management from Simmons College in Boston. I worked with the archives and rare books collections at Phillips Andover Academy and Harvard Medical School before taking my current position in 2007 overseeing the Stanford Medical History Center. In 2007 I founded Stanford Archivists, an organization with approximately sixty members.

As a volunteer, I have served as a pro-bono consultant for the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco, a Board member of the Stanford Historical Society, and a mentor at the Stanford Humanities Center for PhD candidates who are considering careers outside the traditional teaching track.

For Stanford Continuing Studies I have designed and taught courses in California history, as well as created and directed the speaker series "San Francisco Stories," which focused on Bay Area histories of race, immigration, and colonialism.

As part of my work at the Stanford Medical History Center, I guest lecture on topics ranging from historiography to the social history of medicine for undergraduate and graduate classes in many Departments at Stanford, including History, English, Art History, and French & Italian. I also create annual exhibits at Stanford; past shows have included "Stanford Medicine During WWI" and "History of Neurology at Stanford."

I served as a grant reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2014 for their "Humanities Collections and Reference Resources" program and again in 2015 for their "Common Heritage" program. In 2014-2016, I served as consultant to the US Department of the Interior for its Heritage & History Initiative, "LGBTQ America."
