It offers readers interdisciplinary perspectives that create unique dialogues between Brecht and important thinkers such as Althusser, Anders, Bakhtin, Benjamin, Godard, Marx, and Plato. While exploring salient topics such as consciousness, courage, ethics, political aesthetics, and representations of race and the body, it penetrates the philosophical Brecht seeing in him the never-ending dialectic-the idea, the theory, the narrative, the character that is never foreclosed. This book is an essential read for all those interested in Brecht as a socio-cultural theorist and for theatre practitioners.

Silcox. In this article, Silcox makes an analogy between great German Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht’s estrangement effects and the psychological phenomenon of imaginative resistance. Silcox attempts to debunk Brecht’s theory that his theatrical and literary techniques could cause the audience to experience their present reality in radically new and meaningful ways. However, several fatal pathologies in her theoretical conceptualization and empirical data leave her conclusions largely invalid.

First, it provides a framework for understanding Brecht within analytic philosophy by demonstrating how his use of his adaptation's Fabel positions him within philosophical discourse. Second, it provides a case study of Brecht's adapted story, " Socrates Wounded " using that framework. This case study examines the story in relation to Plato's accounts of Socrates fighting at the battle of Delium with specific attention to the theme of courage. It finds that while both agree that courage is found in the wisdom to do the morally just action, they disagree on the nature of that wisdom and on what acts can be considered morally justified. It also finds that while both authors insist on a moral imperative to act courageously, the respective imperatives have different roots and that the two thinkers disagree as to whether or not one must be steadfast in order to be brave.

By employing an original social-psychological theory rooted in semiotics, it offers a qualitative and quantitative empirical examination of more than fifty years of political rhetoric. Further, it presents two in-depth case studies that examine how the cultural, totemic sign of ‘the Founding Fathers’ and the signs of America’s sacred texts (the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence) are used in attempts to link partisan policy positions with notions that the country collectively holds sacred. The book’s overarching thesis is that America’ s civil religion serves as a discursive framework for the country’s politics of the sacred, mediating the
demands of particularistic interests and social solidarity through the interaction of social belief and institutional politics like elections and the Supreme Court. The book penetrates America’s unique political religiosity to reveal and unravel the intricate ways in which politics, political institutions, religion and culture intertwine in the United States.
