These are important aspects of our job but unfortunately this focus often comes at the expense of improving general teaching skills. Skills that make the rest of the job easier and more productive, allowing us to spend more class time immersed in the business of teaching and learning. In this workshop I will focus on a number of basic teaching skills that every teacher should aim to master, no matter what subject they teach. These have been chosen on the basis of research that shows them to be the most effective in improving student outcomes. The main source for these is the meta-study by a team led by John Hattie which is the largest meta-study ever conducted within the field of education. The most important focus in presenting these strategies is what they reveal about an effective philosophy of education.

Improving the quality of teachers is therefore one of the most important factors that we can influence to improve student outcomes. In order to improve the quality of teachers in Indonesia it is essential that a set of evidence-based standards are developed and implemented for the certification of graduate and practising teachers. These standards must clearly set out benchmarks that teachers are legally required to meet in order to be certified and permitted to teach or take on leadership roles within the education system. This paper will examine the development, implementation and support of National Professional Standards for teachers in Australia to discover what lessons we can learn from that process. It will argue that the most important lessons from the Australian experience come from the processes of development, implementation and support themselves and not the actual standards that these processes have produced. It is imperative that the development, implementation and support processes are conducted locally. Education authorities should not adopt standards developed by other countries even if tailored by a small group of education academics, although they may be useful as a basis for development of local standards. Most importantly, national standards should be developed collaboratively by teachers, academics and education authorities. Collaboration between sectors is crucial and the imposition of what is considered to be best practice by education authorities especially on the basis of overseas study must be avoided.

It examines the role that fear appears to play in contributing to passive learning styles among a large proportion of students and offers some indications on the types of pedagogical techniques that may help reduce the impact on student learning. This paper has been produced on the basis of classroom observations; the examination of various pedagogical theories; and informal class room experimentation. It is hoped that formal research and experimentation will be conducted in the future to validate or improve the suggestions offered.

I will discuss one practical aspect of collaboration that you can take away and act upon instantly with only a little bit of effort and planning. Hopefully, it will help you see the benefits of collaboration in your professional life so that you can appreciate the potential of collaboration right across the school spectrum. However, the key message that I want to highlight today is the absolute importance of developing collaborative practices in every aspect of your working life.
