where to stay in Sardinia

Cagliari is where to stay in Sardinia for a city break

SOUTH SARDINIA

Cagliari – Where to stay in Sardinia for first timers

CLOSEST AIRPORT – CAGLIARI ELMAS: 10.4 KM (6.4 MILES) – ABOUT 15 MINUTES DRIVE

Cagliari is one of the most underrated cities in Italy, and a perfect long weekend break especially in the shoulder season. I’d say, this is where to stay in Sardinia in October (but also in April or May), as is has literally the best of everything.

Cagliari is also one of the best places stay in Sardinia for first timers, as it allows you to get to know the local culture and history, the vibe, and try the best food the region has to offer.

Indeed, there are museums, fantastic restaurants, local craft breweries, great shopping, and popular urban beaches, and from Cagliari you can reach many other destinations in South Sardinia on an easy day trip – whether by public transport or on a guided tour. This means that Cagliari is also where to stay in Sardinia without a car.

Once in Cagliari, you should also spend some time on Poetto Beach. The beach stretches all the way to Quartu Sant’Elena, the neighboring city, and has 9 km (about 5.6 miles) of fine, soft sand, and an amazing running and biking path. It’s also a popular surfing spot!

If you want to get a little hike in, Sella del Diavolo mountain only takes a couple of hours to tackle and surmounts Poetto Beach. The trailhead is just behind Calamosca Beach (Cagliari’s second urban beach). If you’re seeking a more remote spot, go to Sant’Elia beach, close to Sant’Elia stadium.

Sardinia boutique hotels

Views of Castello

Best boutique botel – Villa Fanny

Nicely located right outside the historic center of Cagliari at a stone’s throw from the many bars and restaurants of Stampace and close to the Roman Amphitheater and the Botanical Gardens, this hotel has beautifully designed rooms and features a fantastic gourmet restaurant.

It’s where to stay in Cagliari if you want something that is tucked away from the buzz of the historic center, but at the same time you want easy access to all the attractions and restaurants.

Best luxury hotel – Palazzo Tirso

The recently opened Palazzo Tirso is quite the place to stay in Cagliari if you are looking for luxury and glamour, and one of the overall best places to stay in Sardinia.

Its location in Piazza Deffenu, between Via Roma and the districts of Marina and Villanova, allows you to easily explore the city and reach all the best restaurants in town – unless you want to dine in one of its two gourmet (and delicious) restaurants: Cielo, on the terrace, and Terra, on the ground floor.

The modern, comfortable rooms all feature views, some of the bay, others of the Castello historic district.

You will also be able to enjoy a small pool at the terrace level, a wellness center and a spa.

La Marina

Best business hotel – UNAHOTELS T Hotel Cagliari

Centrally located close to Teatro Lirico and in front of the lovely Parco della Musica, T Hotel is a favorite among business travelers and has spacious rooms, a luxe lounge bar, and a fantastic spa that locals also appreciate. The lounge bar at T Hotel makes some of the most delectable cocktails in the city!

The hotel has conference rooms too, which is great if you are traveling as a group with your business partners.

If you are renting a car for your Sardinia trip, T Hotel is a great option as it has its own private parking lot just across the street. There are also bus stops in the nearby Piazza Giovanni XXIII if you want to reach other areas of Cagliari to explore.

Best budget-friendly hotel in Cagliari – Hostel Marina

If you are traveling to Sardinia on a budget, and if you want to stay in the very heart of Cagliari, Hostel Marina is the best option for you.

The hostel is right at the heart of La Marina district and one of the very few actual hostels in Sardinia. It is fun and friendly. This is a highly social hostel that hosts weekly events to keep the good times rolling. They are the kind of events that locals attend too, so it’s a great place if you want to be at the center of action.

Dormitories and private rooms are available. You will be close to all the bars, restaurants and cafés in the city, so it’s also one of the best places to stay in Sardinia for nightlife.

Best hotel by the beach – Nautilus

If you are looking for one of the best hotels in Sardinia on the beach, but also want to stay in Cagliari, then Hotel Nautilus is the right choice – this is one of the best waterfront hotels in Cagliari, right on Poetto Beach – the main beach in Cagliari.

This hotel is literally on the beach: the moment you step out of the door, you can cross the street and step on the sand. Located along the beach there are nice local restaurants (my favorite is Le Palmette), beach clubs, gelaterie. There’s also a running and biking lane (the hotel offers bike rental) in case you want to exercise.

The hotel doesn’t have its own private parking, but there are plenty of spots nearby where you can park your car if you want. If you don’t have a car, you can hop on any P bus that will take you to the center of town.

The hotel has cozy rooms decorated in navy-style, some with a balcony and sea views. There’s a pool too.

Villasimius – Where to stay in Sardinia for beaches

CLOSEST AIRPORT – CAGLIARI ELMAS: 67 KM (41.6 MILES) – ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 10 MINUTES DRIVE

Villasimius is where to stay in Sardinia for beaches. The area of Villasimius also has some of the best diving sites on the island.

There are a bevy of** beaches in Villasimius** and some of the best beach resorts in Sardinia too. With its amazing, easily accessible beaches and shallow waters, Villasimius is also one of the best places to stay in Sardinia for families with kids.

I recommend planning beach days at Punta Molentis and Porto Giunco, but you should also check out Campus, Porto sa Ruxi, and Campulongu beaches. Spiaggia del Riso beach is also very cool to visit: the sand here looks like rice!

Behind some of the beaches you’ll find marshes, salt pans, and flamingos! Capo Carbonara also has a wonderful hiking trail, and you can also hike to the Aragonese Tower of Porto Giunco for views.

The Villasimius Archaeological Museum is also a real treat to visit. It features an extensive exhibit on treasures found at the bottom of the sea, located in a beautifully restored 19th century building.

Sunset in Villasimius

Best luxury hotel – Hotel Simius Playa

A beachfront hotel right on the shores of Simius Beach, rooms are gigantic and beautifully crafted. There is a swimming pool to enjoy and a spa to relax in. There is also a delicious restaurant and bar on-site!

Rooms are fairly classic in terms of decor, and not very big (unless you get a suite), but they are comfortable and have everything you need for a good stay. Some of them have a balcony and fantastic sea views. It’s definitely one of the best hotels in Villasimius!

Porto Giunco Beach, in Villasimius

Best mid-range option – Domus Simius

Domus Simius is a great mid-range option for your Sardinia holiday. You will be close to the center of Villasimius, and within easy driving distance from some of the** best beaches in South Sardinia**. In other words, staying here you will enjoy the best of both worlds!

The hotel has a spa, a gym and a bar, and a beautiful garden too. The spacious rooms are all very modern and comfortable. Some enjoy a partial view of the sea too.

Best budget-friendly hotel – Arega B&B

A great affordable option to stay in Villasimius. You will be in the center of town with immediate access to all the restaurants, bars and shops, and driving distance from the beaches – but the municipality runs a shuttle in case you don’t want to rent a car.

The breakfast is top-notch and varies daily; however, it is always served on the terrace that offers guests pleasant views. Rooms are plain, but comfortable.

Costa Rei

With easy access to stunning beaches, Costa Rei is where to stay in Sardinia for families

Costa Rei – One of the best places to stay in Sardinia for families

CLOSEST AIRPORT – CAGLIARI ELMAS: 66 KM (41 MILES) – ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 5 MINUTES DRIVE

With easy access to the beach and within one hour driving from Cagliari, Costa Rei is where to stay in Sardinia with kids, and for anyone in search of a gorgeous beach respite with all the comforts that the best holiday destinations in Sardinia have.

The main beach of Costa Rei is perfect if you don’t feel like driving – most places in Costa Rei are walking distance from the beach. But if you feel like exploring the area, check out Cala di Monte Turno, Cala Sinzias and Cala Pira beaches. Costa Rei is also close to Villasimius, in case you want to check out those beaches too.

Costa Rei has grocery shops, restaurants, a few boutiques and lots of good restaurants to try (my favorites are Chaplin, an easygoing eatery, and Sa Cardiga e Su Pisci).

Most people who decide to stay in Costa Rei opt to rent a holiday rental – many local families that have a holiday home here rent it out for the season (my parents use to do that too!). However, you will find some good camping sites and hotels in Costa Rei too.

You will have plenty of accommodation options with holiday homes and great resorts and camping sites, and plenty of good restaurants to try. Chaplin is my favorite!

Costa Rei

Costa Rei

Best luxury hotel – La Villa del Re

La Villa del Re is not where to stay in Sardinia with family. In fact, I’d say this is one of the best places to stay in Sardinia for couples. This adults-only hotel is one of the best beachfront hotels in Sardinia, with direct access to a private beach.

You can pick between a classic room, a deluxe or a suite – rooms with views of the sea are a bit more expensive, but totally worth the splurge and the romance of waking up to see the sun rise!

The hotel has an outdoor pool, two restaurants (that observe a specific dress code) and a bar.

There is an outdoor pool and a spa, tennis courts, a restaurant and a bar, and a private beach for all guests. If you are driving, the hotel also has a reserved parking space for guests.

The staff at the reception will be available to help you plan your daily activities, including boat tours along the coast. And if you are traveling with your pet, you’ll be glad to know that Free Beach is pet-friendly.

Best budget-friendly hotel – Albaruja Hotel

CLOSEST AIRPORT – CAGLIARI ELMAS: 38 KM (23.6 miles) FROM PULA – ABOUT 40 MINUTES DRIVE

Pula is about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) southwest of Cagliari.

It’s a popular place to stay in Sardinia because it provides easy access to one of the most impressive archeological sites in Sardinia— the ancient city of Nora, the first Phoenician town in Sardinia dating back to the 8th century BC but also a stratified site with impressive Roman ruins.

In terms of beaches, you will have direct access to the beach in Santa Margherita di Pula, but there are also Nora and all the beaches in Chia to check out. Su Giudeu is popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and a great clear waters and white sand beach about 15 minutes drive from Pula.

There also is a fantastic forest to explore, filled with holm oaks and pine trees, including Is Cannoneris and Pixinamanna. There are well-marked hiking trails around the area, too.

WESTERN SARDINIA

**CLOSEST AIRPORT – CAGLIARI ELMAS: 93 KM (57.7 MILES) – ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 15 MINUTES DRIVE

Oristano, in central-western Sardinia, is an elegant place to stay, with handsome architecture, museums, churches, and art. It’s where to stay in Sardinia if you wish to go a bit off-the-beaten path.

The area around Oristano has incredible natural beauty, especially the lagoons of Cabras and Santa Giusta. Staying in Oristano you will also be able to access the Sinis Peninsula, home to Is Arutas and Mari Ermi (among the best beaches in Sardinia) and the archeological ruins of Tharros.

The province of Oristano also is home to some incredible wineries that are well worth visiting, such as Contini, lauded for its Vernaccia di Oristano white wine. Stop by the Cantina della Vernaccia, located in downtown Oristano, to sample a wide variety of local wines!

The historic center is brimming with charm. You will want to visit the Chiesa di San Francesco, the Duomo Cathedral, and snap a photo of Queen Eleonora’s Statue.

Finally, Oristano is a fantastic destination during Carnival season, as the city hosts the adrenaline-filled Sartiglia, one of the island’s most famous festivals.

Costa Smeralda® is where to stay in Sardinia if you have the budget to splurge

Costa Smeralda® – One of the most exclusive places to stay in Sardinia

**CLOSEST AIRPORT – OLBIA COSTA SMERALDA: 31 KM (19.2 MILES) – 40 MINUTES DRIVE

The Emerald Coast is a consortium founded by Prince Karim Aga Khan in 1962. This is the largest privately managed area in Europe, and such an iconic place that the name Costa Smeralda® is a registered trademark, whose owner are the Servizi Consortili, the operational arm of the Costa Smeralda® Consortium.

While I must underline that Costa Smeralda® is not a toponym, you’ll be glad to know that it is home to gorgeous beaches such as Capriccioli, Spiaggia del Principe and Grande Pevero.

Costa Smeralda® is iconic and expensive, so make sure you have the budget to splurge! In fact, this is the most expensive location in all of Europe! Just for reference, to buy a house there, expect to pay nearly 300,000 euros per square meter. You will find some glamorous luxury resorts and a lot of glits.

Costa Smeralda® is where to stay in Sardinia if you’re looking to experience the high-life, spot movie stars, and live like the rich and the famous on your Sardinia vacation!

The most iconic town here is Porto Cervo. While you will likely have to break the piggy bank to stay there, it’s also a fun spot to go for walk through the boutiques and to see the luxury yachts.

Arzachena is tucked just a short drive inland from the coast. It’s a densely populated area celebrated for its wines – especially the Vermentino di Gallura, one of the most famous Sardinian wines.

Often regarded as a destination in and of itself, this ritzy resort rises over its own cove and it’s one of the best hotels in Sardinia.

Perfect for a family or a group of friends, this villa is one of the best places to stay in the glamorous Porto Cervo and has everything you need to make you feel like a king.

San Pantaleo Sardinia

San Pantaleo

Best resort – Petra Segreta

This is by far my favorite place to stay in the area. Last time I was there, a year ago, I had a wonderful experience. It’s located a bit outside San Pantaleo, a charming small town that’s full of character.

While the resort isn’t on the beach, the coastal views from there are stunning.

You will have a spacious, comfortable view, access to an outdoor pool and to two restaurants, one of them a Michelin restaurant and one of my favorite restaurants in Sardinia.

Olbia

Olbia is where to stay in Sardinia to visit northeastern Sardinia on a budget

Olbia – Where to stay in Sardinia for cheaper access to northern Sardinia

**CLOSEST AIRPORT – OLBIA COSTA SMERALDA: 4 KM (2.5 MILES) – 10 MINUTES DRIVE

Olbia is most often referred to as the gateway to northeastern Sardinia and largely underestimated. This coastal city in the northeast of Sardinia is a great mix of architecture, history, and culture, all while being close to the best beaches in Sardinia and being home to some fabulous restaurants!

Olbia’s most famous monument is San Simplicio Basilica. The Museum of Archeology features incredible exhibits that span the spectrum from prehistoric artifacts to Roman warships.

There is also a massive archaeological complex called the Nuraghe Riu Mulinu to check out. And the medieval castle, Castello di Pedes, is just about a ten-minute drive from Olbia and shouldn’t be missed! The panoramic views of the city, the sea, and the hinterland from the castle are otherworldly.

While Olbia itself has no city beach, just a 15-minute drive will bring you to beautiful beaches. Saline Beach is only nine kilometers (5.6 miles) away, and La Cinta Beach and Cala Brandinchi are an easy 30 minutes drive south. In less than an hour by car, you can reach Capriccioli, Lisca Ruja and the Spiaggia del Principe too.

You’ll be close to many of the top tourist sites in Olbia, like the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, and the Archeological Museum of Olbia, and right at the end of Corso Umberto, Olbia’s main shopping street.

Cala Brandinchi

Cala Brandinchi is one of best beaches in San Teodoro

San Teodoro – Where to stay in Sardinia for nightlife

**CLOSEST AIRPORT – OLBIA COSTA SMERALDA AIRPORT: 29 KM – 25 MINUTES DRIVE

A small town off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, San Teodoro (locally called Santu Diàdoru) is host to a vast number of beaches, including La Cinta, Cala d’Ambra, Li Corri di Li Becchi, Cala Suaraccia, and more!

Cala Brandinchi, nicknamed “Little Tahiti,” and Lu Impostu right next to it are by far the most famous.

There also is an ancient archeological site to visit— a **nuraghe**— called Naracheddu. Make sure to visit the lagoon, which can be found behind the strip of beaches: it is a wonderful place to go birdwatching as it’s home to a flock of flamingos.

San Teodoro is host to a number of bars and clubs, and is known to be one of the best places to stay in Sardinia for nightlife – so it tends to attracts a younger clientele. Having said that, the beaches here have shallow waters which means they are perfect for families with kids.

Cala Brandinchi

Cala Brandinchi

Best luxury hotel – Montepetrosu Charming House

This is one of my favorite hotels in San Teodoro. It’s a bit outside of town, in Montepetrosu, and within a short driving distance from both Lu Impostu and Cala Brandinchi beach.

The hotel has state of the art facilities and enormous rooms. There is also a garden to wander around and some rooms have hot tub to relax in. You can pick a room with views of the mountains, or one with views of the garden. The hotel may ask for a minimum stay of three nights.

Best budget-friendly hotel – B&B Tavolara

If you are looking for a budget-friendly place to stay in San Teodoro, and right on the beach, you should pick B&B Tavolara. You will be able to walk to Lu Impostu Beach, and enjoy wonderful views of Tavolara Island from the hotel.

Rooms are spacious and all have a small patio where you can relax. A delicious breakfast is served in the garden every morning. Parking is available on-site.

Best beaches in Sardinia

Bidderosa, near Orosei, is one of the best beaches in Sardinia

Orosei & Oliena – Where to stay in Sardinia for hiking, beaches and festivals

**CLOSEST AIRPORTOLBIA COSTA SMERALDA: BETWEEN 83 AND 106 KM (51.5 AND 65.8 MILES) – 1 HOUR AND 15 MINUTES DRIVE

Orosei is a positively picturesque small town with a beautiful bay and many gorgeous beaches nearby. Oliena is more inland and it’s one of the most famous small towns in Sardinia thanks to its history and culture.

Both are located in the province of Nuoro, in the central-northeast region of Sardinia, and thanks to their location by the sea and close to the mountains they are among the best places to stay in Sardinia for hiking.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or the kind of traveler who wants to stay a little bit off the beaten path, Orosei and Oliena will be the perfect fit.

There are miles of beaches in Orosei. My favorite is Oasi Bidderosa, a series of small coves that are protected and as such never crowded. But you can also go to Cala Liberotto, Capo Comino and Berchida.

Inside the town there are 13 churches to visit and a medieval castle to see. Expect to wander through cobblestoned streets and be surrounded by charming old houses.

Oliena is where to stay in Sardinia in October. Not only this is one of the towns of the Autunno in Barbagia Festival, but it is close to the others and an excellent base to explore the region.

Su Gologone

Su Gologone source

Best boutique hotel – Su Gologone

Su Gologone is one of the most famous hotels in Sardinia. It’s located in Oliena, nestled between the mountains and surrounded by woods.

It is a gorgeous estate that is truly radiant, a place that both tourists and Sardinians love (my friends and I go there whenever we are in the area!)

From every corner of the hotel, you’ll bask in breathtaking views of the mountains. From the hotel, it’ll take you about 45 minutes to reach either Orosei and its wonderful beaches, or Cala Gonone, from where you can hop on a boat tour of the Gulf of Orosei.

Best budget-friendly hotel – Domo Pro Vois

This small hotel in the heart of town is a few minutes drive (or a 40 minutes walk) to Marina di Orosei, the nearest beach. It features spacious modern rooms, each unique and tastefully furnishing. There’s a terrace for guests and a family room is available too.

Tortolì & Santa Maria Navarrese – Where to stay in Sardinia for boat tours

**CLOSEST AIRPORTCAGLIARI ELMAS: 141 KM (87.6 MILES) – 2 HOURS DRIVE

Santa Maria Navarrese is a small coastal village in the province of Nuoro, on the central-eastern coast of Sardinia, in the middle of the Gulf of Arbatax. Tortolì is right next to Santa Maria Navarrese.

Tortolì (or rather its marine hamlet, Arbatax) is where you’ll find a unique red rock formation that runs parallel to the coastline called Rocce Rosse; it provides a shocking contrast to the aquamarine sea. Each August, the Rocce Rosse Blues music festival is held in Tortolì.

Santa Maria Navarrese used to be beach hamlet of Baunei, which is located further up the hill, but with time it became a small town proper. It is a great base for boat tours to Cala Goloritzé and other beaches of the Gulf of Orosei (also referred to as Baunei Coast).

From Santa Maria Navarrese you can also drive to the Golgo Plateau just above Baunei, where you’ll find the trailheads to hike to Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu and Cala Sisine, some of the most jaw-droppingly stunning beaches in Sardinia.

Best luxury hotel – Lanthia Resort

I stayed for the first time at Lanthia Resort last summer and loved it – it’s one of the best hotels in Santa Maria Navarrese.

The resort is located literally across the street from the Tancau Beach, and a stone’s throw away from Santa Maria Navarrese Beach and the town center – you’ll have access to a private beach too.

The hotel is set in a beautiful, lush garden where you’ll also find the pool, the (fabulous) restaurant and the bar. Parking is available on the premises too.

Porto Frailis honeymoon hotels in Sardinia

The private beach at La Bitta

Best mid-range hotel – La Bitta

Set right on Porto Is Frailis beach (a short distance from Tortolì) and with direct access to a small, private and gorgeous beach, La Bitta features comfortable rooms.

It’s an overall excellent place to stay for your Sardinia holiday, and it’s often booked up. If you can’t find a room there, make sure to at least plan to dine at the on-site restaurant. The food is absolutely mouthwatering!

Best budget-friendly hotel – Lungomare Bed Rooms

Steps away from Santa Maria Navarrese beach, the town center and the tourist harbor where boat tours depart from, Lungomare Bed Rooms is an excellent place to stay for travelers on a smaller budget.

Rooms are on the small side, and there aren’t many services for guests – but you will have everything you need for a comfortable stay. Free parking is available in the street nearby.
