Such a prophetic task must be carried on in the dialectic between the church’s faithfulness to the Kingdom of God and its participation in the world dominated by other kingdoms or empires. Therefore, any public theology must assert the identity of the church as a faithful presence, which simultaneously prophetic and hospitable. By employing the dyadic understanding of abiding-and-go (Michael Gorman) and abiding-and-sending (the Generous Love document), I argue that Christians represent the whole church in their presence in the public space. In turn, by representing the whole church, Christians also make the Trinitarian communion present through their public engagement. As such, the church participates in God’s mission (missio Dei) both institutionally and personally.

Research paper thumbnail of Revisiting Jürgen Moltmann’s theology of open friendship

International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church, 2021

Here I attempt to demonstrate that Moltmann has not developed this subject much over his forty years of engagement with it. However, based on his valuable insights, I offer two constructive proposals to further his idea of open friendship. The first is more analytical in that I demonstrate that Moltmann’s understanding of open friendship is close to what is called the ‘drawing’ model of friendship, although the advent of strangers among us necessitates that we take both Moltmann and the drawing model further. My second proposal is to construct imaginatively a new munus triplex of Jesus as Friend, Servant, and Stranger rather than following Moltmann who suggests a munus quadruplex focusing on Jesus the Friend.

This article deals with the contemporary task of Christian public theology in constructing a cont... more This article deals with the contemporary task of Christian public theology in constructing a contextual model that is able to maintain the dialectic of commonality and particularity. Such a model must pay attention to the search for common ground among many cultural-religious identities, while at the same time it must respect those identities in their own paticularities. The sensitivity to and solidarity with the victims of the New Order's' regime must also be fundamental elements of such a model. To do so, this article discusses two competing theories in social philosophy (liberalism and communitarianism), and their parallel theories in theology (revisionism and post-liberalism). The necessity to construct a more balanced third way between those theories is needed, if Indonesian Christians want to be open to their social and political call and faithful to their Christian distinctiveness.

The concept of the in-between becomes the primary lens through which to analyse not only the relationship between ecclesial and social liturgies, but also the interstices between the two. I then apply the concept to construct theological imagination in the ministries of ushering, intercessory prayer and the sending. The article concludes with a story of the worship of the GKI Yasmin church in front of the presidential palace in Indonesia, which demonstrates the prophetic dimension of the in-between.

Veritas: Jurnal Teologi dan Pelayanan

This study focuses on the relationship between the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Ascension... more This study focuses on the relationship between the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Ascension of Jesus Christ, which often does not receive adequate attention in contemporary theology. The problem of separating the two doctrines is solved by re-examining the doctrine of the hypostatic union of Christ in the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions. Analytical and comparative approaches to the two traditions are undertaken to clearly show the tensions that arise and the possibility of imaginatively and faithfully linking the Incarnation and the Ascension. The study of these two models is furthered by comparing the two contemporary responses of the two traditions, one by Thomas Torrance and another by Niels Gregersen, that results in two ways of understanding Ascension, both as a reversal and as an extension.

By using Stanley Hauerwas’ social ethics and ecclesiology that views the church as an exemplary community, this article proposes an ecclesial model that maintains the tension of being true to its nature on the one hand and being political on the other hand. Such a model is demonstrated through its four dimensions: beholding, becoming, belonging, and befriending. The paper ends with a conclusion, in which the author reflects on the four dimensions by using the perspective of the four classical marks of the church (notae ecclesiae). Such a model is characterized as heterogeneous and nonnormative. As such, it becomes an alternative to the ladder model that is more homogenous and normative, as explicated in the thought of James Fowler. By comparing the ladder and the garden models, as well as several examples within the garden model, the author demonstrates the advantages of the garden model and its implications for pedagogical, pastoral, and liturgical works of the church. The research shows that the garden model is beneficial in making space for multiple ways toward faith growth as well as the enrichment of the life of the church that respects diversity and celebrates unity.

Both divine acts take place in the incarnation of the Son and the inhabitation of the Holy Spirit. The Trinitarian perichoretic principle also applies to the relationship between God and creation in such a way that, not only is the whole universe in the Son (panentheism), but so too the Holy Spirit permeates the whole universe (theenpanism). As a result, Christian theology offers a comforting pastoral message, namely, that the universe is never entirely separable from the loving communion of the Triune God.
