UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Sudan is comprised of 28 Agencies, Funds and Programmes, Missions and Offices.

The UN family in Sudan works closely with national and international partners to promote sustainable development, peace and human rights, and to deliver humanitarian aid.

The collective response of the United Nations to national development priorities is outlined in the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and is supported by the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO).

UN Humanitarian Agencies, Programmes and Funds work with national and international partners to protect the lives and fundamental wellbeing of civilians affected by conflict and natural disasters.

UN Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions

The UN Security Council, by resolution 1990 of 27 June 2011, responded to the urgent situation in Sudan’s Abyei region by establishing the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The operation has been tasked with monitoring the flashpoint border between north and south and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, and is authorized to use force in protecting civilians and humanitarian workers in Abyei. UNISFA’s establishment came after the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) reached an agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to demilitarize Abyei and let Ethiopian troops to monitor the area.

In accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2715, the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission (UNITAMS) closed on 29 February 2024.

The African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) completed its mandate on 31 December 2020.

Supports national institutions to increase coverage and improved quality of basic services;

Provides support to establish sustainable climate adaptation infrastructures to enhance capacity development for better adaptation to climate change;

Supports creating an enabling environment for evidence-based planning and budgeting, while strengthening institutional attitudes to emphasize democratic principles, enhancing local participation in decision-making processes and strengthening capacities to external development assistance;

Supports peace efforts to stabilize communities and strengthens social cohesion;

Provides support to populations affected by natural or man-made disasters, displaced populations, refugees, returnees and host communities to meet their basic needs while increasing their self-reliance;
