Domestic Panic... While I was going to be away, Pijay offered to house sit for for - water the plants, feed the cat......I had a call on Friday morning to ask how to work the sound on the telly as the x-box wasn't working. I could hear noises off in the background - the noise of several teenage boys . My house is full of teenage boys. Teenage boys are icky! I feared for my nice china! I told P that no-one was to go through my lingerie drawer...All was well on my return though. They'd been sitting up all night playing games, making microwave popcorn and watching zombie movies. All perfectly normal. They'd even done the washing up. Apparently Pijay had also cleaned the bathroom - so had I before I left. I don't need to know why the bathroom needed cleaning again. The only bad behavior was from the cat, who'd peed on the kitchen floor because Pijay had put the trap door down and she couldn't get to her box. Poor kitty must have been really desperate - she always 'asks' me if she needs to go downstairs and the door is down, but then I know her noises, and the lads wouldn't have understood her signals.

Kitty wrangling over the weekend ...and no, not a kitty, but a Kitty Rose, Scott and Emma's first born and delightfully rambunctious two-year-old, who have been visiting since Wednesday...She's a very determined young lady, and still a little put out that her motor skills don't quite yet match her desires, but we've been having a lot of fun tearing after her as she takes in Cornwall at top speed...On Saturday after a drizzly outing to Dairyland Farm World, we made a large Black Forest Gateaux for Guez's birthday together, with Kitty helping me crack eggs, beat the mix and spread it in the tins...we then whipped cream and got most of it in the cake and on elbows, and dolloped in black cherry pie filling, until Kitty realised how nice it was and just spooned in straight out the tin into her face...nom nom nom...she then watched in delight as we poured over the chocolate icing and gold edible glitter...and pushed in candles, which were lit and blown out several times so that everyone could have a go....she's discovered she likes showers, and will stay in there until the hot water runs out, keeping us updated over forty seconds or so with 'I'm not finished yet'...she also likes to let us know loudly whenever she's done a poo and would like to be changed. She also likes to watch me in the shower and wanted Daddy to come and see too... Yesterday we all went to the Eden Project where again she took it all in at full pelt as fast as little sandalled feet could carry her around the biomes...there were chips and tomato sauce to eat, jazz to dance to with Daddy, momentary panics as favourite toys were lost and refound and the very through and serious application of imaginary suncream to all the adults around her......of course, once she had exhausted the reserves of the three adults it takes to keep up with her assault on the world she still had energy to spare as Scott, Emma and I stared at each other across the tea-table too tired to do much more than shovel in pasta...Today she was a tad put out that I had to go to work as there are slides at Dairyland Farm world to play on, and doesn't that seem a better way to spend a Monday morning...

Unusual Species Albert continues on his killing spree. Got home about 11 last night from a weekend away, and Mum was standing in the doorway of their cottage cuddling said Ferocious Killer. 'Come and see what he killed this weekend' she said, with proud glee at her baby's prowess, as she took me round to the bins at the back of the cottage. She lifted the lid off the bin with a flourish liken to that of a maitre de uncovering a particularly fine dish to reveal the corpse of a very startled looking squirrel. Death in the form of Albert really took the poor fuzzy-tailed rat by surprise. Imagine him getting to the afterlife, scratching his head and saying to the other squirrels 'what the fuck just happened?'But that's not all! Looking less startled and more damned pissed off was a frigging stoat. Fabulous little animal, and from the look on its face, it didn't go into that great good night at all peacefully. I've only ever seen one once, zipping across a road late at night, moving with sinewey speed and grace. Seemed to awful to consign it to the trash, so have stuck him in the freezer next to the pork loins and have made arrangements to have him stuffed. As the only speaking part I've ever had in any school play was as Chief Weasel in Toad of Toad Hall, I am having him done in an human pose with a top hat, cane and monocle! Sad that the only way I've seen one up close is either with a Bill Oddie commentary or dead...did pick him up to look at its little paws and face..and ok, did confess I was making 'roaw pftt phtt' noises and threatening mum with beastie...now what was that Saki short story about the little boy who worshipped his pet ferret/stoat as a god? As yes... Sredni Vastar. Hmmm...maybe I should have a little Sredni stoat instead as a household totem???Actually I need to check whether it is a stoat, or its cousin the Least Weasel...I love that, not the 'Lesser Weasel', or 'the Short-Tailed Weasel, which is the American term for the stoat, but the Least Weasel...sounds like the title of a kid's book about the little ferret that could...It's a source of much intrigue as to just what that cat is going to drag in next!EDIT: oooOOooo - blimey, there's an audio file of Shredni Vashtar being read as a Late night Story by...Tom Baker!!! Fantastic! Linkage: http://www.fulldls.com/files-ebooks-358421.htm (clicky linky)l

Domesticity Last night I was having a gentle tidy...folding laundry, doing the washing up, sewing buttons on type of thing...looked around and the kitty had tidied herself into a drawer. I suppoe there was residual warmth in the freshly ironed clothes...She does love to vary her napping places, and any new box open cupbaords is fair game for investigation. In other news, I've developed quite a nice little collection of carnivorous plants. So far staying away from the obvious fly-traps, and going instead for the beautifully sculptural qualities of the sarrecenias and sundews. I found out recently that sundews actually grow wild at the nature reserve near to Helman Tor, but I have yet to go on a hunt to see them in a habitat. My folks went to a gardening show at the NEC this week and I was utterly delighted to find this beauty hanging up in the kitchen on my return:In natural light:One with flash: I'm away this weekend, so he can hang out at my folks until I'm back and can find a suitable spot for him above my kitchen table, but isn't he magnificent! You have to love a plant that can produce strange protruberances that manage to look both phallic and vulvic...no doubt more photos later, and suggestions for a name for him appreciated; a plant this groovy needs a good name. And finally, as much a surprise to me as anything: today I feel well! Not just 'not ill' but actually 'well'. This is so rare, to feel healthy and to have energy and not just feel bone tired and as though 'pushing through treacle'. Long may it last!
