Difficulties Students face in Sight Translation Exams: A Case Study at the University of Sulaimani- Department of Translation, 2021

The method of orally reproducing a written text in a target language is called sight translation ... more The method of orally reproducing a written text in a target language is called sight translation (STr). This method is used as a bridge between translation and interpreting which is now considered as its mode of interpreting. Sight translation is two-toned because it requires both reading and speaking; therefore, students face difficulties and challenges while performing the task. The purpose of this study is to highlight the problems students face before taking an exam in sight translation and during the exam. To conduct the study, depending on Likert-scaled questions, fifteen senior students participate in a two-part quantitative questionnaire. The first part is a pre-test questionnaire in which students are asked to answer a set of questions to highlight the challenges they face before the exam. Later, the students are asked to translate a text from English into Kurdish, through which the researcher tries to evaluate the students' translation and their abilities to overcome the problems they face in performing sight translation according to sight translation exam criteria. Soon after, the students perform the post-test questionnaire in which they give their reviews about the challenges they had during the exam. The whole questionnaire is designed to validate the results of the students in sight translation exams. This paper is helpful to understanding the students' challenges in sight translation and helps the translation teachers to make appropriate pedagogical decisions to ease the challenges students face during sight translation.

Colour Idioms are those expressions that are used to describe feelings, emotions, and thinking to... more Colour Idioms are those expressions that are used to describe feelings, emotions, and thinking towards people, objects and situations. Colour Idioms may not have their Kurdish equivalences since they are connected with western culture. The paper studies the fact that students' colour perceptions affect their translation while they are translating from English into Kurdish. The aim of the study is to examine the translation of Colour Idioms from English into Kurdish by the under graduate students through their perceptions toward colours, and to know how their perceptions towards the colours will affect their colouridiom translation. In order to accomplish the aim of the study, 26 undergraduate students who are studying in the Department of Translation taken to participate in a two-part questionnaire. In the first part, the students were asked to show their perceptions towards the colours, how they see and understand the colours, and what feeling and emotions they have while seeing each colour. The second part of the questionnaire includes 40 statements; and each statement contains a colour idiom within its contextual meaning, and the translator should give the correct equivalence for each idiom within the statements. The study shows that; Firstly how the students translated the colour idioms, through the data being collected about their acceptable and unacceptable translation of the idioms, and Secondly; performing the data being collected to show the perceptions that affected the students' understanding of the idioms.

some amount of cultural background to be understood appropriately. It is intended to examine the difficulties and problems raised by cultural items and the range of translation procedures employed to explain the meaning of the problematic terms through the analysis of the lexis from such English cultural domains as Ecology, Material culture, Social culture- work and leisure, and organizations, customs, activities, procedures, concepts, political and administrative, religious, and artistic concepts and finally gestures and habits.
The problem addressed in the process of translation through the cultural
dimension is how far and to what extent the translated text should integrate in the target culture and how much it should retain of the source culture. To examine and tackle these problems, the thesis covers the following:
Chapter one tackles the introduction which highlights the aim, the hypothesis, the procedures, and the data of the study. Chapter two explains translation and its definitions, kinds, translation as process and product, equivalence, methods, procedures, and theories of translation.
Chapter three deals with culture, its definitions, characteristics, and also components of culture are included. It also deals with the relation between language and thought, and language and culture.
Chapter four which is the core of the study covers the categories of culture
and for each category more than one text is selected as example, and in each text the words that are problematic are underlined, and their meanings with the procedures adopted to solve the problems are discussed.
Chapter five covers the summary, conclusions of the study and suggestions
for further studies. Throughout the study, the percentages of the procedures that are used to overcome the problems are referred to. Among the most important conclusions we have drawn from the study are: since translation is culture- bound, the translator plays the role of mediator in the task of translating the problematic words to help the Kurdish reader to arrive at the exact meaning, and the transference strategy is the most prominent way to solve and control most of the problems and obstacles.
