However, in mythical as well as ancient stories, one can find traces of the familiarity of ancient people with medicine and treatment. However, after the emergence of Islam (6 A.D.), numerous textbooks on the pharmacy science (pharmaceutical science) are available. These texts, along with other historical and literary texts, encompass traces testifying the existence of such traditional pharmacies. Such pharmacies were in practice till mid-19th century when the first medical school was launched. At this time, mainly due to the familiarity of Naseredin Shah, (the King), with medical improvement in Europe, the first modern medical school was established in Iran. A French doctor, Dr. Focckette, as the first pharmacy teacher, started working in this school. This was followed by the effort made by Albert Schev...

This study tried to investigate how the form-focused instruction affects lower-intermediate EFL Iranian learners’ grammar learning. Based on an experimental data collection and analysis, the design of the study was a pre-test and post-test which dealt with 45 female participants at the pre-intermediate level. The pre-test was administered at the beginning of the course; then, the researchers observed two groups-- experimental (FFI) and control groups (traditional method). The researchers used an observation checklist which contained some items to investigate if the teacher used the related items in classes. Afterwards, the researchers provided the frequency of observation of teachers’ operations which showed differences between the FFI and the traditional instruction. After observing the teaching sessions,...

The current study analyzed cultural content of three mainstream intermediate level EFL textbooks. This study was carried out using Chen’s (2004) and Lee’s (2009) suggested themes for detecting big “C” and little “c” culture aspects. Big C represents series of statistics and facts such as art, geography, history, education, festivals, and customs of the target speech community; small c represents norms, beliefs, sociocultural variables such as age, sex, and social position (Lee, 2009). This study also analyzed the cultural categories including target culture, source culture and international culture based on Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) category and another category i.e. neutral culture based on Aliakbari’s (2004) category. This was a qualitative-quantitative study and chisquare test was applied in it. It was found that generally both little “c” and b...

Grammatically, they are formed differently. That is to say, while some are simple nouns, others are a combination of prefix/suffix and a noun and some others that of an adjective and a noun. There are still others which are adjectives by nature but functionally are used to name an individual. Due to the semantic as well as syntactic diversity noticed in the formation of proper name, the present study has primarily taken a descriptive approach and has studied Persian proper names to find out what grammatical categories contribute to the proper name construction; furthermore, certain combinations mark the gender of its beholder. Then, the researchers have traced the possible semantic connotation assigned to each gender.

Cultural content and developing learners’ intercultural competence has become an important issue ... more Cultural content and developing learners’ intercultural competence has become an important issue after the advent of intercultural communicative approach (ICC) in language teaching field. Therefore, the cultural content of EFL textbooks as learners’ main source for language learning is an important issue for investigation. The current study analyzed cultural content of three mainstream intermediate level EFL textbooks, namely Top Notch (volume 2), American English Files (volume 3) and Four Corners (Volume 2). This study analyzed the cultural categories which included target culture, source culture and international culture based on Coratzzi and Jin’s (1999) categorization as well as the category introduced by Aliakbari (2004), culture free to complement these three. This was a quantitative study. The quantitative data focused on an account of the amount (percentage and frequency) of the cultural content treatment in the textbooks. To find out if the difference between cultural categories was statistically significant or not, chi-square test was applied. The result of the study showed statistically no significant difference among the three books in terms of their cultural categories.

Some of the earliest fictional stories published in Persianlanguage newspapers, in the 1850s, were French. This trend continued, through Iran's Constitutional Revolution (1906), into the early decades of the twentieth century. During this period, Morteza Moshfeq-e Kazemi began writing the first Persian serial story and novel, Tehran-e Makhuf (Appalling Tehran). The present study investigates the effects of the translation of French serial stories on Persian ones, with a specific focus on the impact of the novel Les Mystères de Paris (1842-1843), by Eugène Sue, on the Persian novel Tehran-e Makhuf (1924).

To this end, 50 students involved in the study took a test of both lexical and grammatical collocations to measure their collocational knowledge, first. Then, an IELTS sample test (IELTS Practice Plus Pearson Education Longman University, Version two) was administered in order to find the students' reading, writing, speaking and listening proficiency. Pearson correlation coefficient and regression model were used to analyze the data. Pearson correlation coefficient illustrated a significant correlation between knowledge of collocation and reading (P=0.724), writing (P=0.724), listening (P=0.706) and speaking (P=0.885) proficiency. Regression model was conducted to find the exact contribution between variables. It indicated that knowledge of collocation can be a predicator for all four language skills. In addition, knowledge of collocation has the greatest impact (R 2 =78.3%) on participants' speaking proficiency. Based on the above mentioned results, knowledge of collocation proved to be a prerequisite for successful language learning. This research confirmed the influential role of collocation knowledge in essential language learning.

Scientific writings, including medical writings, are expected to observe formality, precision, lack of ambiguity and concentration of highly technical terms. In such genres, the use of nominalization, affecting the lexical density of the text, plays a key role. In this connection, the purpose of this study was to compare the use of nominalization and the level of lexical density in medical academic articles written by native English writers and their Iranian counterparts based on the theory of grammatical metaphor proposed by Halliday (1985). To this end, the abstract section of 20 authentic English medical articles written by native English writers and 20 abstracts written by Iranian authors, drawn from highly influential medical journals, were selected. These abstracts were analyzed and compared based on the frequency of nominalization used and the level of lexical density in them. The findings revealed that Iranian writers used less nominalization in their writings.

At this time, medical practice is noticed to be more scientific than those written years before or even many centuries after because, keeping a distance from superstitious views, the practice follows the scientific procedures of the day. The present study adopts a sociolinguistics perspective to examine the social status of the patient in the text. The textbook-"Khofi Alayee"-was chosen to be examined mainly because it was considered as a scientific book written for public use; also it was published as a kind of pocket book for people to use while on trip or, more importantly, when the doctors were in emergency situations. This text, like other medical texts, is expected to be written impartially, but this is not usually the case. The result of the study showed that the patient was primarily viewed as an object with no social status considered for revered citizen. On the other hand, in occasions when the patient was treated as a person, he represented a male belonging to the middle or higher classes of the society.
