A newly coined phrase - Korean wave - which refers to the popularity of Korean media culture across East and Southeast Asia, is a metaphor for thinking about this recent regional media development. Through an examination of the recent big leap of the Korean media industries, this article argues that the US dominance thesis regarding globalization is not entirely justified. Although popular entertainment forms such as film and television are a Western invention, Koreans have provided their own twists to these media by blending indigenous characteristics and adding their unique flourishes in often innovative ways.

China has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of commercial newspapers, and advertising has become a major revenue source for the Chinese media since the early 1990s. Media commercialization has provided an incentive and opportunity for journalists to cover lively stories with diverse topics, and expose political corruption, government inefficiency and social injustice (Lin, 2003). In this vein, many Chinese journalists hold investigative reporting, a muckraking genre of journalism that was introduced into China in the early 1990s, in high respect, and show desire for and passion in practicing it. Against this backdrop, we shall explore the reality of the pres freedom in China and Chinese journalists' understanding of the investigative journalism by doing a case study of the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolitan Daily ("Nanfang Dushi Bao," thereafter SMD), one of t...

Based on these results, we have discussed the acceleration of plasma flow containing the charged macroscopic particles. The estimates presented make it possible to draw a tentative conclusion about the axial acceleration of the dusty plasma flows.

On the other hand, some observers have begun to argue that the hyper-commercialism has brought the Korean cultural industries to a crisis. By examining a brief history of U.S. commercial media system's global spread, this paper makes an effort to understand the Korean media industry within an international and historical framework. Secondly, it analyzes the processes of Korean media industry losing its competitiveness following the Korean Wave success. Based on the research findings, this paper warns against the potentially detrimental effects of commercial media system.

Two hundred and fourteen US students completed the survey in spring 2013. The respondents all in all had a difficulty in telling one East Asian country’s product from the others’. Of the countries scrutinized in the present study, a majority of young Americans held neutral attitudes toward China and Japan but negative attitudes toward South Korea. A sizable number of young Americans knew a few Japanese-turned-global, pop cultural brands but mistakenly believed they were Made in China, although they could not recognize Chinese product names and brands. Among single pop cultural products, Gangnam Style was most salient in young Americans’ memory. Finally, pop culture-induced soft power appeals were somewhat linked to the amount of knowledge the respondents believed they had about a certain country as well as the degree of their liking of the country. Still, the present study indicated that a country’s soft power is not entirely independent of her hard power. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Recently, Korean pop music, or K-pop, has become one of the most dynamically distributed forms of pop culture in the global pop market through these ‘social distribution’ networks. This article explores the ways that this new mode of social distribution is characterised by bottom-up grassroots aspects as well as corporate-controlled top-down aspects by analysing the recent dynamics and practices of K-pop consumption and circulation on social media, using a case study of K-pop fandom in Indonesia and the ‘Gangnam Style’ phenomenon.
