[**mood** |pissed off]Warner Bros. announced Wednesday that it will release Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” on June 14, 2013, not in December 2012, as it had previously planned. The reboot will remain on schedule to commence shooting later this summer, with the added time used for postproduction.A studio spokeswoman declined to offer a reason for the shift; in fact, she said it was not a change, pointing out that the reboot had never been given an official release date in the first place and that the December 2012 date was a tentative period announced very early in the development process. She waved aside the notion that more time is being taken because of any issues with the script, pointing out that the shooting schedule remains the same.However it’s characterized, the new date does clear some space between the studio’s major upcoming releases: Warner Bros. will bring out the first installment of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” adaptation in December 2012; had it come out in December ’12, “Man of Steel” could have competed for studio resources during that period and also gone after a similar audience as that film. As it is, the studio will now have a major summer release at a time when its "Dark Knight" and "Harry Potter" franchises have ended.Starring Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, the new take on the caped hero is being guided by Christopher Nolan, who is producing and godfathering the project. He’ll now have a little more time to work on the movie in the editing room after his “The Dark Knight Rises” hits theaters next July. The June date does suggest the film will have the action-filled spectacle that characterizes most big-budget summer release (not that there was a tremendous amount of doubt).The 2013 summer calendar is still fairly open, although Marvel Studios has said that it will bring out the next installment of "Iron Man" in early May. The "Man of Steel" move is reminiscent of another move from the holidays to the summer for a big-brand reboot: Paramount moved "Star Trek" from the holidays in 2008 to the summer in 2009, with the J.J. Abrams film going on to become a global hit.

[**mood** |pissed off]2012: The Year of the Superhero Movie just lost one of its biggest stars. Long assumed to be targeted for late 2012, Warner Bros. announced today that its new Superman film, Man of Steel will instead bow on June 14, 2013. The shift benefits ginormous December tentpoles, such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Lone Ranger, but sets Man of Steel up in a more appropriate summer-movie slot. The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-man, and The Dark Knight Rises will battle for summer 2012 supremacy, while Superman will now likely compete with Iron Man and Thor sequels in 2013.

[**mood** |sad]When Zack Snyder's Man of Steel comes out next year, it will represent the second time that Warner Bros. has tried to bring back the most famous comic book character in history. When Bryan Singer directed Superman Returns in 2006 it was meant to spring new life into the franchise that had died when Superman IV: The Quest For Peace came out in 1987. Unfortunately the film was rejected by fans and the studio decided to start again with a new origin story. But what if Snyder's version fails? They can just start again, right? Apparently it's not that simple.Variety has published an article looking into the rights issues behind Superman and they are more complicated than you could possibly believe. Unless something changes, by 2013 the rights to the earliest parts of Superman lore will revert back to the estates of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the character's creators. But it only gets weirder from there. Should events come to pass, the character would actually be split up in two, with some characteristics belonging to DC Comics and Warner Bros. while Siegel and Shuster get the others. According to the report, the creators would own the look of the costume - blue leotard, red cape and boots - as well as his famed ability to "leap tall buildings in a single bound, while all of the villains, including Lex Luthor, and Supes' ability to fly would stay with DC and the studio.But what about sequels, then? By 2013 DC and WB should be able to "exploit the Superman projects it's already made," but the company cannot make anything based on material owned by Siegel and Shuster. A way that they could get around this, however, would be to split the character into two distinct generations. The article cites a case between comic book powerhouses Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane where it was deemed legal for Gaiman to publish "Medieval Spawn" comics because the character was different enough from McFarlane's original creation. Splitting the character in this fashion would allow each side to focus on their own version of the character instead of looking over each others' shoulders. The other option is for the two sides to strike up a deal that will allow both sides access to the character, but, obviously, that's not exactly simple given all of the details and conflict.So what should you take away from all of this? Try your very best to enjoy Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. It could very well be the last time that Superman gets proper treatment on the big screen.

He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him [...] We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible.Cavill certainly fits Snyder's casting criteria — the Sucker Punch director was looking for a young, lesser known TV actor to play the hunky Kryptonian. Also, a British Superman! The last time we saw this was, what, John Cleese's Superman: True Brit?Cavill's been a contender for several big genre roles throughout his career. The L.A. Times reports that Cavill was in the running for Clark Kent in 2006, when McG was helming Superman Returns — of course, the role eventually went to Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer secured directing duties. Also, Cavill auditioned for Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins and was passed over for James Bond in favor of Daniel Craig.Snyder's Superman will come out December 2012, and we'll get to see Cavill flex his epic genre chops as Theseus in the Greek fantasy flick The Immortals this November.
