Create & organize sections in Google Chat - Computer (original) (raw)

To easily track your conversations, you can organize your direct messages and spaces into sections in Google Chat.

Create new sections

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Click and hold a conversation in the Chat navigation panel.
  3. Drag and drop to the top of the conversation list .
  4. Type the section name.
  5. Click confirm .

Tip: You can also hover over any section header, such as Direct messages or any custom section you created, click More and then Create new section.

Move a direct message or space to a section

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. In the navigation panel, click and hold a direct message or space and then drag to a new section.

Tip: You can also drag and drop spaces or direct messages into sections.

Change display preferences

In sections, you can customize your display to:

Show all messages or unread messages only

For each custom section, you can turn sections on or off to Show all messages or Show unread messages .

Adjust section heights & placement

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. To adjust sizing for:

Sort alphabetically or by most recent

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Next to a section header, click More .
  3. Select Sort by most recent or Sort alphabetically.

Resize the chat navigation panel

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat.
    • If the navigation panel is hidden, at the top left, click Menu .
  2. To adjust the chat roster horizontally, drag the bar left and right.

Tip: This feature is only available in Google Chat on the web.
