No page information in search results (original) (raw)
If a Google search result says that no information is available for a page, like this:
It means that the website prevented Google from creating a page description, but didn't actually hide the page from Google.
If you own this site you can improve this result either by letting Google read the page to create a good description, or by hiding the page entirely from Google Search results. Read below to learn how.
How to fix it
This isn't my site
The page owner prohibited Google from reading the page, which prevents us from creating a page description. Unfortunately there's nothing that Google can do about this.
If you know the site owners, tell them about it, and send them a link to this page.
This is my site
If you own the website with the blocked result, you are probably seeing this result for the following reason:
The page is blocked by Robots.txt
Description
Your website has a rule in its Robots.txt file* that prevents Google from reading the page. Google must read a page to be able to generate a description for search results. If Google is allowed to show the page, but isn't able to read it, Google will show the page without a description.
*A Robots.txt file is a standard file that websites use to prevent search engines from crawling specific pages on their site. Some site hosting services create this file automatically for their customers. The next section describes how to confirm that this is the issue.
1. Confirm the issue
Confirm that your page is being blocked by robots.txt on your site.
2. Fix the issue
To fix this problem, take one of the following actions:
Option 1: Let Google read your page
If you want a proper page description in Google Search, you must fix your robots.txt file to allow Google to read the page.
Option 2: Block the page entirely from Google search results
You can prevent the page from appearing entirely in Google Search results by following these steps:
- Take one of the following actions to block your page:
- Remove the page from your site, or
- Require a user login to access the page, or
- Use "noindex" on your page. If using noindex, you must also remove the robots.txt rule that blocks the page to search engines. Sounds strange, but Google needs to be able to read the page in order to see your "noindex" instruction. Learn about robots.txt here.
- Tell Google about the change using the remove outdated content tool. This will quickly remove any stored copies of the page from search results. Copy the URL from search results into the tool.
