Recently in the UK, an increasing focus has been placed on the role of culture in regeneration, but this has mainly been framed in the context of social and economic renewal. The absence of cultural theory from regeneration debates mirrors its lack of engagement with the political process in the UK and this theory-gap has important implications for the effects of regeneration strategies on communities. The work of city-branding in regeneration is primarily concerned with representation and imagination. The work of Derrida and Baudrillard is used in this book to critique the re-imagining of the city in cultural regeneration strategies. The conclusions of this body of post-structuralist thought cast doubt on the whole process of city- branding, but developments in the field of Cultural Planning provide a unique opportunity to join theory and praxis by viewing culture as a resource in the regeneration process and by engaging communities through their cultural practices.

Previous studies have provided insights into tourist behavior and activity choices, but without research on activity preferences and their relationship with perceptions of destinations. The literature still lacks an integrative model exploring the antecedents of activity preferences, including tourist characteristics, destination personality, and destination image, and explaining the nature of the relationships between them. This research was carried out from the perspective of political economy, using a modified regulation theory approach in which Bourdieu’s cultural sociology was used to supplement the standard concepts of the regulation school. Primary research was carried out using a Critical Realist methodology that was based on a multiple-embedded case study design. The case study chosen was the region of East Kent, and, specifically, the English Seaside Towns of Whitstable, Folkestone and Margate. Cultural Regeneration policies and practices were analysed within this case study in order to draw conclusions about the broader New Labour context. Data was collected from 93 policy documents and 49 interviews during the final New Labour Government, from 2007-2010. This research shows that the local va...

In particular, these professionals are required to maintain the complex balance between the competing priorities of historic value and contemporary relevance. Little research has thus far investigated the role that sustainable events can play in the management of historic buildings, beyond considerations of the trade-off between conservation and income generation. This research analyses the contribution that events can make to the sustainable management of historic buildings, with an emphasis on understanding the perspectives of event managers within these properties, based on qualitative interviews with historic building event managers and stakeholders in London, United Kingd...

A plethora of studies analyse sets of internal and external motivators, while methodologies that exclusively focus on a single factor, such as age, that can sometimes have a determining influence in multi-attraction destinations, are less prevalent. This study introduces a fuzzy logic approach to develop a new model for analysing the internal motivations of different-aged consumers in multi-attraction urban destinations. Fuzzy models, as a mathematical means of representing vagueness and imprecise information, have the capability of recognizing, representing, manipulating, interpreting, and utilizing data and information, which typically for urban tourist motivations, are vague and lack certainty. This research tests the model in a real-life setting, using the example of Novi Sad, a mid-sized European city, which is typical of many similar ...

Because of this, it is important to understand how employees manage their emotions to help them to remain satisfied with their work, thus contributing to the satisfaction of tourists. However, job satisfaction, emotional intelligence and emotional labor in tourism have not previously been studied together as variables in a single model. This research analyses the mediating role of emotional intelligence in the relationship between job satisfaction and emotional labor in travel agencies, as well as job satisfaction as an antecedent of emotional labor. Design/methodology/approach This study was based on 30 one-hour-long structured interviews with visitors to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. Respondents were asked to express their preferences between different pull-factor motives for their visit, using Saaty’s scale, and further qualitative data were collected to examine these preferences in more depth. Findings The results of this study indicate that the most relevant criteria and thus predominant factors in motivation for visits to Ljubljana are the Cultural and Nightlife pull factors, while religious and business motives are the lowest ranked factors. The paper argues that the results show the value of applying the AHP model to understand the role of pull factors in urban tourism destinatio...

Research paper thumbnail of Packaging liminality: the management and commodification of liminal landscapes in tourism

Liminal Landscapes continue to provide inspiration for tourists and resources for tourismdevelopm... more Liminal Landscapes continue to provide inspiration for tourists and resources for tourismdevelopment. From the Romantic period onwards, the tension between the natural and the man-made, the tamed and the un-tamable, has sparked the imagination of painters, novelists, musicians, poets and travel writers. In this paper, we break with the dominant approach to liminality in tourismand sociological discourse and propose that the tourism industry has created landscapes of managed liminality that offer consumable, packaged experiences of liminality and not thecarnivalesque freedoms of the romantic imagination.

This research began with a study of the seaside promenade as an architectural form and a socialspace. The promenade is a liminal space, but amanaged one in which the carnivalesque freedomsand unpredictabilities of the beach were reined in and packaged; made safe for consumers andpredictable for tourism entrepreneurs, producers and municipal capitalists. The promenade sitsbetween public and private space, between human and wild space, and acts as both boundarymarker and connector for these different spaces.

Central to this research has been the work of Walter Benjamin, as exemplified by the ArcadesProject . In this work, Benjamin set out to break free from the classical narrative and binary forms of sociological and historical analysis in a study of the Parisian Arcades of the nineteenth century. TheParisian arcades were a liminal space within the broader field of early capitalist development, marking and making distinctions between commerce and culture as well as the private and publicspheres.Benjamin’s methods included ethnographic observation, the collection of fragments of texts fromcontemporary and historical sources and the presentation of cultural texts. Placing these sourcestogether, without submitting them to the structures of narrative history, enabled Benjamin tosuggest new forms of analysis of particular relevance to the study of tourism spaces that combineelements of the familiar and the strange, the commercial and the unexploited and the natural andthe man-made.

We have been applying these methods to seaside promenades for two years in anonline project at http://arcadespromenades.wordpress.com/ . This has allowed us to develop an understanding of the way that the liminal landscapes of the shore have been developed andpackaged by the tourism industry to create spaces of capitalist carnivalesque and managedliminality. In this paper we present our methods and findings from the arcades / promenades project and alsoextend
this to other spaces of managed liminality created by the tourism industry: the airport, thecultural quarter and the theme park.

Research paper thumbnail of How low can it go? The devolution of economic development and the possibility of economic insurgency

This presentation provides a critique of the UK Government’s policies and plans for devolving eco... more This presentation provides a critique of the UK Government’s policies and plans for devolving economic development processes from the regional to the local and neighbourhood levels. Drawing on economic development theory and experiences from Europe, Latin America, the United States and Japan, radical approaches to economic development are reviewed that suggest possibilities for innovative approaches to the problems of economic development in the cities of the UK.

International examples show that alternative models are available for growing the economies of our cities and towns that have the character of a challenging, bottom-up insurgency – a stark contrast to the conservative models of growth being offered by the new Local Enterprise Partnerships and Government departments[1]. In an economic insurgency, traditional, hierarchical institutions and frameworks come under attack from below as new economies take shape and start to re-shape places from within.

Following the financial crisis of 2008, Western governments have struggled to develop consistently successful responses to stimulating sustainable growth in post-crash economies[2]. In the UK, the Government’s ‘local growth’ white paper appeared to promote a return to pre-crash methods of top-down economic development with an increased role for the private sector, despite the rhetorical references to a ‘new localism’[3] and economic ideas of subsidiarity and sustainability.[4] However, despite these contradictions, recent Government espousals have the potential to create an environment in which more radical approaches to economic development are becoming possible. This presentation argues that an economic insurgency is a necessary next step in local economic development in the UK.

By using micro-ethnographic methods within a qualitative case study to compare the rhetoric of the festival with the practices occurring within it, the researchers have been able to make a number of recommendations for continuing and deepening the greening policies of this event, including a need to increase the scope and influence of the spaces of hyper-sustainability within the festival so as to broaden their localised impact and increasing direct engagement with festival goers on environmental issues.

Research paper thumbnail of The development of seaside towns: domestic tourism in a core-periphery context

Peripherality in tourism has traditionally been a concept used to contrast remote, economically d... more Peripherality in tourism has traditionally been a concept used to contrast remote, economically disadvantaged, often exotic locations, with the prosperous tourism generating core(s) of northern, western nations. Dependency theory highlights the tension that this creates between nations and populations whose relationships are constructed on the basis of inequality (Britton 1982). This ‘core-periphery conflict’ has produced global landscapes of tourism governance that reflect these inequalities (Jordan 2004).

There have been relatively few attempts to study the governance of domestic tourism within the context of core-periphery theory (CPT). This is a significant omission in tourism and governance literature as domestic tourism at the local level also manifests economic and social inequalities which can lead to conflict (Weaver 1998, Bianchi 2002).

This paper examines the historical and contemporary development of British seaside towns, and the governance of tourism in these towns from a CPT perspective, concentrating on three historical periods. Firstly, the mid 19th century in which their development was tied to the growth of British industrial centres. Secondly, the period in the second half of the 20th century when the growth of southern Mediterranean resorts presented a challenge to seaside towns and, finally, the first two decades of the 21st century in which attempts to regenerate seaside tourism in the UK have been governed by the spatial remits of Regional Development Agencies and the new Local Enterprise Partnerships (Kennell 2010).
