Since we live in an era where technology plays a crucial role in human being's everyday life, it ... more Since we live in an era where technology plays a crucial role in human being's everyday life, it has become the voice of society. Thus, media can be described as a reflection of the society, which make communication among people around the world easier as well as helps in making people informed with the latest news and what is happening around us. While a few decades ago, to send a message to someone, we had to wait for days to deliver the message, now any conversation or anything important can be sent or occurred in a second. Accordingly, social media as one of the foremost platforms for communication has brought the world together on one single platform. Based on these, social media has also helped the language to develop swiftly as when a new vocabulary comes out, we do not need to wait until it will be added to the dictionary but through media we will be informed or/and will learn the word. Hence, the research study intentions to explore the role of social media in developing vocabulary and how Coronavirus has helped to introduce a wave of new vocabulary and phrases among English non-native speakers. The sample chosen for the study consists of 40 English non-native speakers: 20 females and 20 males, ranging in age from 18-30 years. To achieve the target objective of this study, a questionnaire has been selected. The findings show that social media has been a great source of information especially in term of new vocabulary and vocabulary developments. Moreover, COVID-19 has caused to create a new range of phrases and words. In addition, the findings show that how social media and social crises play a crucial role in lexical innovation and creativity.
This study investigates intersentential and intrasentential code switching among late bilinguals ... more This study investigates intersentential and intrasentential code switching among late bilinguals among the Kurdish bilinguals. enormous studies have been conducted on the impact of age of language acquisition on learning second language, however a little research have been conducted concerning to the influence of age of acquisition on how bilingual speakers code switch and the influence of language proficiency on intersentential and intrasentential code switching. The result found out that that age of acquisition plays a crucial role in bilingual code switch. Early bilinguals code switch more frequently than the late bilinguals, intersentential code switching is more common among late bilinguals, whilst intrasentenial code switching is more trend among the early bilinguals.

This article discusses the sociolinguistic attitudes of Kurdish parents from Erbil towards their ... more This article discusses the sociolinguistic attitudes of Kurdish parents from Erbil towards their children's bilingualism in those private schools where English is the main language of the school. Studies have shown that the attitude of the learners towards second language learning has an impact on their mother language development. In such a context, children's increased use of English compared to their limited use of their native language has become a prevalent phenomenon. As a consequence, despite the fact that Kurdish is the first language of the children and even the region, children have created their own speech communities in which their social engagement with classmates and teachers is in English inside and outside of school. This study attempts to explore the reasons behind the motivations of those parents in choosing English medium schools and their attitudes towards the educational experiences of their children. By virtue of parents playing a crucial role not only in having influence on the academic progress of their children but also in changing the attitudes of their children towards the importance of the first language, it is also important to examine the parents' attitudes towards educational systems and language learning of their children as a whole. The last question examines whether preferring learning a second language over a mother tongue does not put the Kurdish language in danger in the future, and how the role of government may be considered in this regard.

This thesis explores grammatical aspects of code switching in Farsi-English bilingual speech, based on a case study of Iranian immigrants in Brighton, UK. The research addresses the following research questions: 1. To what extent does the Farsi-English data offer support for the idea that there is an asymmetric relationship between the two languages involved in codeswitching (Myers-Scotton 1993)? 2. How do the grammatical components of the typologically dissimilar languages Farsi and English interact in bilingual speech? 3. Overall, which model of the structural aspects of code switching most accurately predicts the patterns found in the Farsi-English data?
