WIAA Champion Jack Madoch (2023) Switches Commitment From Wisconsin to Virginia (original) (raw)

For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
After initially planning on staying close to home and swimming for the Wisconsin Badgers, high school senior Jack Madoch has announced that he’s heading east for his college career and will join the University of Virginia Cavaliers starting this fall.
After careful reconsideration I have decided to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Virginia. I want to thank my family, teammates, and coaches for helping me get to this point; as well as Coach Desorbo and Fenwick for giving me this opportunity. GO HOOS!!!
Madoch, who swims for the Verona Area Swim Team and Middleton High School, has seen marked improvement in his core events since he initially committed to Wisconsin last summer.
Here’s a look at some of the improvements:
Summer 2022 | Spring 2023 | |
---|---|---|
50 Free | 20.34 | 19.59 |
100 Free | 45.10 | 43.74 |
200 Free | 1:41.04 | 1:38.26 |
50 Back | 23.36 | 22.56 |
100 Fly | 50.10 | 46.80 |
When Madoch announced his plans to swim at Wisconsin last summer, we didn’t even list his 100 fly as one of his top times. But he steadily chipped away at his personal best in that event, leading to a 46.80 at the NCSA Spring Championships last month. There he took 2nd behind Scotty Buff, who we ranked as the #1 recruit in the class. Madoch also finished as the runner-up behind Buff in the 50 free, clocking a new lifetime best of 19.59, and he anchored Verona’s 400 free relay in a swift 42.81.
In February, Madoch had a stellar performance at the Wisconsin Boys Division 1 State Championships. He led Middleton to the state championship by sweeping the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 19.61 and 43.74, setting a state record in the 50 free. He also swam on both of Middleton’s victorious free relays, leading off the 200 free relay in 19.84 and anchoring the 400 free relay in 43.55, en route to another state record.
Madoch is now part of a freestyle-heavy recruiting class heading to Charlottesville this fall, including Hayden Bellotti, Simon Lins, Will Thompson, Zachary Larrick, Noah Dyer, Tristen Davin, and Jack Berube. Madoch will join a sprint group that set the American Record in the 200 free relay a year ago led by All-Americans Matt Brownstead, Matt King, and Connor Boyle. Additionally, Jack Aikins, Tim Connery, and transfer Anthony Grimm aren’t necessarily sprint free specialists, but have swum either the 50 or the 100 free at NCAAs, giving the Cavaliers coaches plenty of free relay options this season and beyond.
