Research paper thumbnail of An integrated fuzzy MCDM model for prioritizing strategies for successful implementation and operation of the bus rapid transit system

Annals of Operations Research

The selection and prioritization of suitable strategies to address the challenges to the successf... more The selection and prioritization of suitable strategies to address the challenges to the successful operation and implementation of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system is a common problem faced by practitioners and decision-makers. Recent research has widely discussed the issue, but such assessments have remained limited in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania context, where there are mobility difficulties. The present study addresses this research gap and identifies the most critical challenges to BRT implementation and operation, and recommends the most appropriate strategy for overcoming them. Seven strategies are defined. To prioritize these strategies, five criteria are determined. An integrated multi-criteria decision-making model is introduced. Improved Fuzzy Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis based on the Bonferroni operator was used to determine the importance of the criteria. Measurement of alternatives and ranking according to compromise solution was applied to assess and rank the strategies. The results indicate that "frequent flooding at the Jangwani bridge bus terminal" and "long waiting time at bus stops" are the most critical challenges while the fourth alternative "strengthening the operation and management" is the appropriate strategy to be implemented for successful operation and implementation of the BRT system. After that, a five-phase sensitivity analysis is performed to observe the robustness of the proposed approach. The results indicate the flexibility and applicability of the proposed approach can address real-life problems. The proposed methodology in this work can be instrumental in assisting mass transit operators with the successful implementation and operation of the BRT system.

Railway transportation has a crucial role in the economy of any country. However, the pronounced deficit of its infrastructure in the region becomes a challenge. Fourteen SWOT factors were identified through a questionnaire survey on central and managing authorities of different countries. The application of a combined SWOT matrix and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to evaluate the priority factors and to employ them in developing strategies. The findings of the study show that the competition from road and the intermittent state intervention are the major threats. The main weaknesses are the obsolescence and non-functionality of infrastructure and the chronic lack of financial resources. The results also showed that the potential market growth is the main opportunity while the large-capacity rail haulage over long distances is the main strength. Based on the results, strategies have been proposed to guide the governments in promoting regional integration, strengthening intra-regional trade, balancing national and regional development, and contributing significantly to the reduction of poverty.

Asphalt concrete mix with the merits of good bearing capacity, low water permeability, shock abso... more Asphalt concrete mix with the merits of good bearing capacity, low water permeability, shock absorption, excellent strength, noise reduction and easy construction is an important option of high speed railway substructures. In recent years, China has witness a rapid grow in the high speed railway sector resulting in railway fatigue, drainage and settlement issues in the loading bearing infrastructure of tracks. Asphalt concrete has been used in the railway infrastructure of Chinese high speed railway. On the basis of finite element method, mechanic responses of asphalt concrete underlayment (ACRS-1 type) and an ordinary slab structure based on mechanistic models were analyzed using both static and dynamic loads. The results show that the stress at the bottom of the asphalt concrete foundation under the ACRS-1 structure is very small, and will not exceed the bearing capacity of the asphalt concrete which is the allowable strength. Comparison of the two kinds of track infrastructures i...

In the first phase, the Entropy method is employed to determine the weights of each sub-criterion of the decision model. This process identifies six main criteria, i.e., safety, security, internal business aspect, intermodal aspect, innovation, and learning aspect, and customer satisfaction which are further supplemented by 13 sub-criteria. In the second phase, the MARCOS method is used to rank the countries based on their railway performance assessment. Based on the results from the proposed method, a sensitivity analysis was carried out through a comparative analysis with seven other multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The results of the study indicate that the most weighted sub-criterion is the labor productivity (internal business perspective criteria)...

The percentages of the viscosity modifiers used were: TPS (0%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% and 16%) and RST and HVA (8% and 12%) depending on the type of asphalt binder. Technical indicators of modifier asphalt were tested through conventional and unconventional binder tests. It has been found out that only a percentage greater than or equal to 14% TPS is reasonable to achieve the requirement set by 20,000 Pa s for the 60 °C dynamic viscosity on local #70 grade asphalt. The results indicate that conventional binders did not meet the requirements of the 60 °C dynamic viscosity when 12% of TPS or HVA modifiers are used. In addition, the (B-type) styrene–butadienne–styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binder has better viscosity balance than the (A-type) (SBS) modified when 8% of each of the three different kinds of viscosity modifiers is used. Therefore, the (B-type) modified SBS thus appears to be a suitable choice in asphalt mixtures for bus rapid transit lane with the 60 °C dynamic viscosity. Appropriate specimen thickness and air voids content should be selected to quantify the representative tensile strength during in-situ conditions. a b s t r a c t The present study attempts to investigate the effect of moisture conditioning on the indirect tensile strength (ITS) of cold recycled mixture with bitumen emulsion. Firstly, samples were prepared using a Superpave gyratory compactor. They were hence conditioned using moisture induced sensitivity tester (MIST) device. Factorial design was carried out considering four factors each at two different levels. These factors were specimen thickness, air voids content, pressure and number of cycles. In the MIST device, samples are cyclically subjected to water pressure through the sample pores. The MIST conditioned samples were tested for indirect tensile strength. The analysis of two-level full-factorial designed experiments revealed that all four factors have a negative effect on tensile strength of cold recycled mixture with bitumen emulsion. Specimen thickness was the most significant factor affecting the tensile strength followed by air voids content. In two-factor interaction, specimen thickness-number of cycles, air voids content-pressure, and pressure-number of cycles were significant. The most significant three-factor interaction was specimen thickness-pressure-number of cycles.
