OpenSolaris vs. Solaris | [17 Dec 2009|08:15am] |
---|---|
I have some software that does some translation from UTF-8. In Solaris the product has always run fine, but in OpenSolaris I see an error:ld.so.1: someprogram: fata: relocation error: file someprogram: symbol_iconv_open: referenced symbol not foundNow, from what I have found out is that Solaris used a system call called: _iconv_openand most Linux use a similar system call in libc called: iconv_openBut apparently there is a slight difference between Solaris and OpenSolaris, which causes this issue.Does any have ANY knowledge of this? Somewhere I can look to confirm this hypothesis? Thanks | |

Link checking | [02 Dec 2009|04:14pm] |
---|---|
In my spare time I run two websites and they use joomla as I have a number of users who add content on a regular basis. So I am looking for a link checking program that identifies 404 links. I use Linux mainly, but would be open to something on Windows. Ideally I would like this to be able to run daily, and send an email, but what ever. Also, please, don't recommend a Joomla plugin. I have far too many plugins installed already. Thanks in advance. | |

Windows Vista Search Freeze | [25 Aug 2009|03:51pm] |
---|---|
I have a problem with a user. She was searching for something in Outlook. Her computer froze, and kept freezing on each boot. Mouse works, but the busy icon just spins and spins. So, to get her back and working, through trial and error I discovered that, using MSConfig, if I stopped the search service from starting that said computer would work fine. Now, with the Windows Search Service stopped, everything is good. So she asks now, "What happens if I want to search in Outlook?"So my question to you Windows System Admins is, how the heck do I manually fix this? I imagine it's just a matter of reindexing something, but I am (obviously) a Linux guy. I have no idea what I can do to resolve this.Any suggestions? Thanks | |

Backup tape policy algorithm | [10 Oct 2008|08:33am] |
---|---|
I have been trying come up with a rudimentary tape backup policy algorithm but I really don't want to reinvent the wheel. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. Here is what my current algorithm looks like:((AmountofData/CompressionRatio)/BackupSpeed)/60=NumberOfMinutesForBackupI know that this is a generality, but I am looking to expand this. I would like to include things like total backup pool size, speed of clients, database speed, network speed, etc.If anyone has anything that they can contribute to this I would very much appreciate your input. | |

IE Issue | [15 Aug 2008|09:25am] |
---|---|
I've Cross-Posted this a number of places - sorry if you are an unfortunate soul that encounters it more than once. The system is running XP Pro.The affected browser is IE7.No other connectivity items are affected: ping tests are fine, firefox browses fine, email transmission and retrieval are both fine. The Problem: IE is slow - VERY slow - to start loading pages. Once they begin to load, they load quickly and fine, but the initial response is so slow that some sites (including the one the user needs the most) sometimes time out rather than load at all.Duration of the problem: it began last Thursday while I was away on vacation.Attempted solutions: my part-time coworker ran some anti-malware scanners and found nothing. Upon my return I, too, ran a series of anti-spyware utils and found nothing. I cleared out 185MB of temporary internet files.I am pretty sure the solution is something obvious that I have just overlooked while trying to catch up on the 7 business days of work that piled up while I was out for vacation. But, the sooner I fix it the better for my user - help? | |

Here's an interesting one | [23 Aug 2007|04:17pm] |
---|---|
The Facts:OS: Vista UltimateOutlook 2007Gmail account (333 messages total in gmail online box, earlies to of which is 7/21/07)MSN Account - dangerously fullThe problem:Out-bound email was always forwarding to both the user's blackberry and his iPhone. So he poked around with settings.Outlook stopped being able to receive ANY email.I blew away the settings and re-set them up, correctly..Now Outlook keeps downloading 413 new messages. The SAME 413 new messages... over and over and over again.I thought, perhaps, this was a combination of MSN and gmail, so I removed the MSN account... and it is STILL downloading the same 413 messages. Note - only 333 messages even in the gmail account according to gmail. And wait, there's more! The newest message being downloaded is older than the oldest message in the gmail account.Anyone have ANY idea what is going on here?x-posted | |

Driver Issue | [25 Jul 2007|12:40pm] |
---|---|
OK, Here's the scoop. One of my users had a computer. The PSU blew and took the MB with it (for whatever reason).I do not have the parts kicking around to replace these so I went and grabbed the cheapest machine I could from the nearby Best Buy to get a machine back up and running as quickly as possible. The problem is that the machine had Vista on it.The user has applications that are needed that do not yet have Vista versions and the XP versions do not run right in Vista. The machine I bought has XP drivers on the eMachines website, but they do not work.Changing OSs is not supported by eMachines support. (why do they provide XP driers, expecially ones that do not work?)I used the Belarc System Advisor to get the part number of the MB and then went to the manufacturer's website to see if they have XP drivers. They do not, Vista only. The part number is mcp61pm2ma and it claims the manufacturer is Gateway.Anyone know where I can get drivers for this board for XP? | |

Any using (or supporting) a property management software package titled "Skyline" by Anton Systems, Inc?I have a couple of issues that I am trying to figure out (have a work-around) but do not have enough experience to know what is really going on.Their technical support is too expensive for these minor problems.Thanks. | |

[12 Jul 2007|10:53am] | |

I was presented with a laptop that had been partitioned (supposedly by the manufacturer) in a very odd manner: 15GB C drive, 54GB D drive and the remainder of the 80GB drive as unpartitioned space.I needed to install a piece of software that has a minimum requirement of 20GB. This requirement included the estimated database size that would, ultimately, be user-generated. Obviously, 20GB is not available on a 15GB partition. So, I used Acronis to image all the partitions on the drive and then I re-partioned the drive to a single volume. When I restore the image from the original C partition to the new C partition everything goes fine. I set the new partition to be the active partition (e.g. boot-able) and all the data appears to get restored fine. Except for one issue, after re-booting, it will not boot. It claims it cannot boot the to partition and that my hardware configuration is wrong. After trying this a few time with various different settings all recieving the same result I thought about doing a "dirty" restore. So I did. I installed a clean version of windows (XP Pro) to the disk and then I did a restore over the windows directory. At first glimpse, this worked.... but it has different issues. All the data and settings seemed to carry over but my wireless settings are not correct (in fact the services associated with them are not even running) and a program that uses audio will also not run. I am also having issues with the user-content synchronization with the server (even on the wired network, which works even though I cannot get to the settings).I know I should have written down the exact boot error message, but I figured I would be able to solve the issue.... Anyone have any thoughts? I really do not want to have to manually restore all the files and install all the programs from scratch unless I absolutely have to.Thanks! | |

Checking RAM Remotely | [17 Apr 2007|04:36pm] |
---|---|
Greetings!I have never tried to do this before, but I find myself in a position where I am trying to find out whom needs RAM upgrades on their workstations. I could connect to each machine, in turn, using terminal services... which is not a problem if no one is using the machine and they are on... but most of the time when they are actually on, someone is using them.... and then do the standard right-click on the "My Computer" icon to find out how much RAM in installed. I do notice, however, that I can access the device manager remotely without interfering with the user... but I see no entry for RAM anywhere in it. Am I missing that in the device manager? Is there another way to check the installed amount of RAM remotely? Thanks! | |

System Path | [20 Mar 2007|04:17pm] |
---|---|
Greetings!I have an interesting problem that is more of a curiosity than a problem. The OS is Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server SP1and, apparently (so I am told), when Sybase was installed (this particular ticket is not my forte of knowledge and so I know nothing else about it, but I am having trouble finding anything about this using Google) the default system path got changed so things do not work right from the command prompt and the Run command.Anyone have any ideas on how to properly correct this without messing up anything?I am sure it is something simple (a registry key, perhaps), but I have never experienced this before so I am not sure where the problem is and I am not keen on monkeying on someone's production server without more certainty that I have. Thanks! | |

[13 Mar 2007|03:46pm] | |
---|---|
Greetings!I am very interested in finding an answer for the following situation and I am hoping someone has one.Exchange Server 2003 w/ SP1running on MS Windows Server 2003 for Small Business ServerWe have a situation where one user may be causing troubles and their supervisor would like all inbound and outbound email for the user's account to be silently (in other words, no rules in the local MS Outlook Client) copied to to that supervisor as well.I am looking around in the Exchange Server utilities and management and I cannot seem to find what I need to make this work. I thought perhaps recipient policies could be made to make it work, but I am not seeing how. We have found two ways to capture this information, but one of them captures all inbound and outbound email from ALL users on the same message store (e.g. a backup utility of some sort) and the other exports the messages as XML documents. Neither of these will suit our needs, if we have to resort to this we will just simply tell the supervisor to open the mailbox and check it manually as needed.Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this? | |
