Prof Rajvardhan Azad, MD (Ophthl) FRCSed, FICS, FAMS, obtained his MD (Ophthalmology) degree in 1977 from the most prestigious institute of the India i.e. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He pursued his academic career at the Dr R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AllMS, New Delhi and rose to become the Chief of the Centre from where he superannuated in the year 2014. Prof Azad is well known among his peer groups across the world for his scholarship and outstanding contribution as an able Administrator, Educationist, Researcher and a Surgeon. He excelled in all spheres of activities.Prof R V Azad has travelled widely and invited to deliver lectures all over the world including Institute of Eye Microsurgery, Moscow, USSR, Dohney Retina Institute, Los Angeles, California, USA, Texas Retina Associate Dallas, Texas, USA and Beaumount Retina Institute, Detroit, Michigan, USA. He has been a Visiting Professor to enumerable Medical Institutes all over the World. He is also currently Visiting Professor of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, china and also Advisor to state key Laboratory which is the main research hub for ophthalmology in Guangzhou, China.He has published at least 12 books including the only book published on ROP in the world. He has published more than 200 original research papers in the various leading journals of the world namely AAO, Retina, Act Ophthalmologica, IAVS, NEJM, IJO, CEO, BJO, Ee, APJO, WJVR. He was Principal/Co Investigator in more than 25 clinical trials on AMO, Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinopathy of Pre-maturity (ROP). He was the first from India to hold the prestigious post of the President of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, a body of more than 50, 000 Ophthalmologists of the world. He was also the Member of Global Advisory Committee of American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He also remained Advisor to the Government of India for National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB). Under his leadership, his Centre functioned as a National Surveillance Unit where cataract surgical outcomes and ocular morbidity from 21 sentinel surveillance units across India were monitored.Prof Azad was also the President of the National Board of Examination wherein he initiated Educational, Administrative and Examination reforms in the National Board of Examination during his tenure from May 2001 to May 2004 and introduced transparency, Objectivity and accountability in the working of the Board. He introduced Screening test for Foreign Medical Graduated (FMGE) and OSCE Evaluation System and also the Examiner Orientation Programme.Prof Azad took voluntary retirement in the years 2014 to set up his own eye hospital -Raj Retina and Eye care hospital in his home town Patna, giving his super speciality Vitreoretina services and educating ophthalmologist through CME’s, Lecture and community work. Currently he is chairman of University service commission, Govt of Bihar, India
