In my role as Resident Representative UNDP Eswatini, I also serve as UN Eswatini Evaluation Manager and Chair of the Policy and Programme Support Group (PPSG) for the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) In the Kingdom of Eswatini. I was delighted this week to introduce the UNDDCF evaluation to the Joint National Steering Committee, co-chaired by Hon Dr. Tambo Gina, Minister of Economic Planning and Development (MEPD) and Mr. George Wachira, United Nations Resident Coordinator. Stakeholders from the public and private sector, as well as academia and civil society, participated in the event. This evaluation will inform the ongoing design of the UNSDCF 2026-2030. - UNDP Resident Representative Henrik Franklin officially handed over the Digital Readiness Assessment report to the Minister of Information and Communications Technology (MICT), Hon. Savannah Maziya, today at the Hilton Hotel, marking a significant milestone in the country’s path toward digital transformation. Supported by the UNDP Chief Digital Office, UNDP Eswatini, in close collaboration with MITC, assessed the country’s digital strengths, challenges, and opportunities, paving the way for a strategic roadmap that aligns with national development priorities. The DRA confirmed the country’s systematic advancement in key areas of digital transformation based on identified priority areas. The assessment highlighted the need for investing in: ✅ Connectivity and public digital infrastructure: Digital ID, Payments, and Data Exchange Interoperability. ✅ People: Creating Digital Skills for the Population and Civil Service ✅ Public Services: Providing better public services through digital platforms. ✅ Strengthen digital ecosystems: Private Sector Digitalization, including support for innovation and the start-up ecosystem Through a collaborative approach, we aim to create a roadmap that not only builds digital infrastructure but also fosters digital skills, supports innovation, and promotes inclusivity. We are committed to supporting Eswatini’s journey toward a digitally empowered society that leaves no one behind – Franklin. The insights from this assessment will help us craft policies and frameworks that support our national digital transformation agenda. It is encouraging that the findings of this DRA are aligned with the Government in Your Hand Strategy – Hon. Savannah Maziya. - Some of Eswatini delegates to the seventh edition of the YouthConnekt Africa Summit 2024 visited the University of Rwanda to learn more about the UNDP-supported University of Innovation Pod (UNIPOD), which aims to promote innovation and interdisciplinary research and nurture the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs in the University. This UNIPOD is one of 22 established across Africa. It has 10 studios in different fields, which provide a platform for students and small businesses to access high-end technology and research to advance their entrepreneurship skills. The UNIPODS are part of timbuktoo Africa, the UNDP-supported bold, pan-African innovative initiative to spark a youth-driven start-up revolution in Africa across eight sectors: Agritech, HealthTech, GreenTech, TradeTech, TourismTech, EdTech, Creatives and Smart Cities. #YouthConnekt24 #Agenda2063 #Africa #Eswatini
- To draw insights from other countries implementing the Youth Connekt Africa initiative, the Minister of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs, Hon. Bongani Nzima, yesterday facilitated an engagement between delegations from Eswatini and The Gambia as the kingdom prepares to establish its local chapter. The meeting occurred alongside the seventh edition of the Youth Connekt Africa Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda, from 08 to 10 November 2024. The meeting aimed to help the Eswatini delegation gather lessons learned and best practices from its Gambian counterparts. The Gambia, which joined the programme in 2019, is one of 33 African countries participating in the UNDP-supported initiative that aims to create 10 million jobs for youth across the continent.
