German philology students' perceptions of grammar and its role in foreign language speaking o... more German philology students' perceptions of grammar and its role in foreign language speaking or why it is necessary to get to know learners' views for successful foreign language instruction Over the last three decades beliefs about language learning have been the subject of many theoretical and empirical publications. This paper aims to present the views of Polish students of German studies and, in particular, their opinions about the relationship between the knowledge of grammar and the ability to speak German as foreign language. The data for the study were collected by means of dialogue diaries. The results seem to indicate that grammar is traditionally perceived as an external set of rules, patterns for sentence building rather than part of language in general, not as a source of making meaning, but as a formal system. Learning journals are widely used in second/foreign language research. They are not only tools to... more Learning journals are widely used in second/foreign language research. They are not only tools to gather data but also contribute to optimization of the learning process and help students become more autonomous. The discussion presented here focuses on dialogue journals, which are used for ongoing written interaction between the teacher and learners. The paper provides a terminological basis, gives examples of topics and describes the characteristics of the teacher-student dialogue management. The advantages and disadvantages of dialogue journals are discussed from the didactic perspective. The last part of the paper concerns empirical problems to be taken into account when learning journals are introduced and used.

We discuss the pros and cons of this approach. Diary studies are classified as methods in exploratory-interpretive research. Diaries can help investigate language learner behaviors, encourage student self-assessment and explore how the language learning processes progress. The most problematic methodological aspects are the following: data collection, limitations of learners’ reflections and limited generabilizity.

Learning routinized formulas is one of the relevant and effective components of foreign vocabular... more Learning routinized formulas is one of the relevant and effective components of foreign vocabulary acquisition. Therefore the lemmatization of such set phrases and the way they are explained in mono-and bilingual dictionaries for foreign language learners is of importance. The paper presents German and Polish routinized formulas listed in the dictionary Langenscheidt Słownik Premium Niemiecki, polsko-niemiecki, niemiecko-polski (2014). The analysis of selected items as examples shows, especially with respect to pragmatic phraseologisms, not only some issues concerning selection of appropriate equivalents but also signals the need for inclusion of additional lexicographic information (e.g. in the form of glosses) which could facilitate correct understanding and application of the examined routinized formulas by dictionary users.
