Un-supervised management in past decades has led to the demolition and change of historical bazaars and negligence of its different aspects. The present research aims to investigate the resilience of historical bazaars preserving their identity and different developments.Design/methodology/approachThe artificial neural network (ANN) has been applied to investigate the resilience of historical bazaars. This model consists of three main networks for evaluating the resilience of historical networks in terms of adaptability, variability and reactivity.FindingsThe ANN proposed to evaluate the resilience of historic bazaars based on the mentioned factors is efficient. By calculating mean squared error (MSE), the model accuracy for evaluating adaptability, variability and reactivity were obtained at 7.62e-25, 2.91e-24 and 1.51e-24. The correlation coefficient was obtained at a significance level of 99%. This indicates the considerable effectiveness of the artificial intelligence model in modeling and predicting the qualitative properties of historical bazaars resilience.Originality/valueThis paper clarifies indexes and components of resilience in terms of adaptability, variability and reactivity. Then, the ANN model is obtained with the least error and very high accuracy that predict the resilience of historical bazaars.

This study aims to evaluate the aesthetic aspect of these structures using ML algorithms based on the expert's experiences. First, various datasets of forms were produced using a parametric algorithm of free-form space structures written in Grasshopper. Then, three multilayer perceptron ANN models were adjusted in their most optimal modes using the results of the preference test based on the aesthetic criteria including simplicity, complexity, and practicality. The results indicate that the ANN models can quantitatively evaluate the aesthetic value of free-form space structures.

The majority of these structures were designed only for the gravity loads; therefore, they don’t have adequate resistance and ductility against horizontally-applied loads such as those induced by earthquakes. When these structures are subjected to lateral loads applied by moderate and strong earthquakes, they collapse completely, causing massive death tolls and extensive losses. Iranian seismic history has shown that the majority of masonry buildings were completely destroyed under severe earthquakes, with a number of buildings with timber laces remaining safe and stable. In the past, timber framed masonry structures were built with no design guidelines and were solely based on the experience of traditional Iranian architects. Also, in the construction of these buildings, a form of wooden bracing system is used as the load carrying sys...

These motifs are selected because of low condensate of members and the ability to construct them appropriately as load barring rod elements in the dome space structure of slow Shabdari arch. Hence, motifs are projected on the geometry of slow Shabdari arch to create a dome space structure. The problem of parametric modeling of motifs is done in two cases of changing the number of basic modules and changing module production parameters. In the first case, the projection algorithm of basic modules depends on the dissemination coefficients representing the number of modules' proliferation in horizontal and vertical direction of dome. In this case, the aim is to create sparse or delicate networks based on the form of fixed basic module. In the second ca...

A unit consists of two bars elements which are capable of rotating about their intermediate pivot node. The pantographic structures are generally utilized in flat (like roof), cylindrical (like barrel), and spherical (like dome) deployable structure and they are not used in anticlastic structure like hyperbolic parabolic (HP) structure. The HP surface may form when a convex parabolic goes on the length of concave ones with the same curvature. On the other hand, the hyperbolic surface can be constructed using two families of mutually skew lines in which the lines in each family are parallel to a common plane, but not to each other. In this paper, the creation of HP surface with pantographic structure is presented. The creation of a HP pantographic structure is demonstrated with the use of three methods including: a) two border scissors; b) four border scissors; c) All-scissor HP Pantographic Structures. These structures are formed by connecting translational, polar or angulated units that are composed of scissor-like elements. The studies especially on the angulated scissor structures mostly concentrate on developing certain types of planar or spatial structures; thus, they do not present a systematic form-finding method for different types of angulated units lying on different path-curves. This paper aims to introduce two design methods including geometrical method based on drawings and analytical method based on mathematical equations both for generating various angulated scissor structures and facilitating the design of asymmetric and polycentric structures. First, basic design principles of the angulated scissor structures are investigated. Then, proper solutions are proposed to design such planar structures using both geometrical and analytical methods. Various planar angulated scissor structures are generated lying on monocentric and polycentric curves or straight-line in the deployed, fully deployed, and undeployed configurations. Finally, a case study as a numerical model of a sunshade with monocentric curve is presented.

Research paper thumbnail of Structural Typology of Karbandi and Rasmibandi in Persian Architecture Based on the Place and Method of Usage

Culture of Islamic Architecture and Urbanism Journal, Sep 10, 2017

The so-called “Karbandi” and “Rasmibandi” are two kinds of vault covering elements based on Islam... more The so-called “Karbandi” and “Rasmibandi” are two kinds of vault covering elements based on Islamic star geometry, which are of the most common patterns in the restored projects and new buildings, including the Haj Mohammad Qoli Timche in Tabriz historic bazaar, the Mausoleum of Omar Khayyam in Nishapur, and others. These patterns are created by intersecting several rib vaults based on totally strict mathematical and structural techniques. Despite the importance of Karbandi and Rasmibandi in Persian architecture, there are plethora of contradictions and disagreements between workmen and researchers for determining and classification of various types of Karbandi and Rasmibandi. Therefore, the solidarity of previous statements and papers are diminished. Accordingly, the major question is as: what are the differences between various types of Karbandi and Rasmibandi based on their place and method of usage. The purpose of this paper is the clarification of Karbandi and Rasmibandi types and to find the similarities and differences between them. This study is a basic theoretical research and the research methodology used is analytic-descriptive, which relies on historical sources, historical documents, texts and images in historical periods and constructed samples. The paper is presented in two major sections. The first section is related to the scrutiny and comparison of previous works and attempts to determine the specific definitions of Karbandi and Rasmibandi concepts. As a consequence, the position of Kars in either major or secondary vaults cannot be used as criteria to distinguish Karbandi from Rasmibandi. The Karbandi as coverture can be used in both covertures of major vaults and coverture of secondary vaults, whilst, Rasmibandi can exclusively be used beneath major vaults. The most important difference between the major and secondary vaults is the kind of their load bearing mechanism. In the case of major vaults, the burden of both two clusters, dead loads and live loads, is by means of Karbandi. However, in the secondary vaults, Karbandi usually bears its own dead loads. Moreover, the Nimkar (semi-work) can be categorized in two Karbandi and Rasmibandi groups based on their performance and load bearing behavior. Karbandi has a rib vault of load bearings elements, whilst, Rasmibandi is constructed in dependence with upper vaults. In the second section of this paper, the applications of different Karbandi and Rasmibandi types are investigated and their key points are highlighted by considering the findings of the previous section. The results indicate that, not only can Karbandi be used in the applications of coverture positions, but it also has non-coverture uses. Karbandi is someties used as either “Chapireh-Sazi” or in facade of buildings. In the case of “Chapireh-Sazi”, Karbandi is usually used by means of “Shekanj” and “Gosheh-Sazi”. In the case of Gosheh-Sazi, the transition is usually done without any height increase of dome. Thus, “Chanbare” is not created beneath the dome and the height of Chapireh-Sazi remains unchanged. Finally, a comprehensive classification of various types of Karbandi and Rasmibandi was presented based on usage place, constructional and form-related features, application, structural function, and material of rib vaults. Keywords: Karbandi, Rasmibandi, cross-ribbed vaulting, vault coverture, Persian Architecture.
