A total number of 194 women in the age group 30 to 60 years were studied. They include 108 postmenopausal women and 86 premenopausal controls. Total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides were determined. Results: The mean value of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly increased in postmenopausal women when compared to premenopausal women. There was increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in postmenopausal women but the difference was not significant. The atherogenic index of plasma was increased in postmenopausal women ...

Different medium such as ground water (G.W.), tap water (T.W.), distilled water (D.W.) and 5% ethanol in distilled water were selected for this study. The decrease in surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC) in ground water, tap water, distilled water and 5% ethanol in distilled water, ease of cleansing action of the detergents in this medium have been found of the following order: 5% ethanol in distilled water > distilled water (D.W.) > tap water (T.W.) > ground water (G.W.). Among the four detergents, the D1 have shown the least surface tension, CMC value, foam collapsing time, the weight of scum formed when treated with hard water. And maximum emulsion stability of the detergent D1 determines good quality detergent.

Research paper thumbnail of Use of Statins as Lipid Lowering Agent in Hypercholesterolemia in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study

Journal of Nepal Medical Association, 2020

Statins are hydroxymethylglutaryl reductase inhibitors that effectively lower the cholesterol level. It is widely prescribed in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Thus it optimizes the lipoprotein profile. The selection of a particular drug by the practitioner should be primarily based on clinical outcome. This study was conducted to find the type of statins that are most preferred by the doctors for treating dyslipidemia and preferred the fixed-dose in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among the practicing doctors of Kathmandu Medical College from July to August 2020. Ethical approval was taken from the Institutional Review Committee of the college (Ref: 207202006). Convenient sampling was done. A semi-structured questionnaire was used with consent. The data were analyzed with Social Statistical Package for th...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Air Pollutants on Peak Expiratory Flow Rate of Public Bus Drivers in Bhaktapur, Nepal

People involved in transportation jobs for long duration like bus drivers, conductors are more vulnerable to ill effects of air pollutants. The purpose of the present study was to assess lung function of public bus drivers exposed to outdoor air pollution by means of PEFR. Methods: Fifty healthy, non smoking bus drivers were selected randomly from bus parks of Bhaktapur district. Anthropological records were taken. PEFR value was obtained by Mini Wright’s peak flow meter. Their mean PEFR was compared with 50, age matched control group involved in other office works. Results: The PEFR value was significantly lower among bus drivers than the control group…

Female medical students are no exception. It not only interferes with their physical activity, it forces them to skip their regular classes. Study objective was to know the menstrual pattern and disorders among female medical students of Kathmandu medical college. Material and Methods: A Cross-sectional study was conducted among 171 female students of basic sciences, Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Duwakot from March to May 2017. Pre-designed structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: The mean age of study population was 19.81±1.05 years. The menarche age of the students was 12.95±1.08 years. 33.3% of students had irregular menstrual cycle which was associated with BMI. The majority of the students (67.3%) complained of premenstrual symptoms. About half (53.8%) of study population reported incidence of dysmenorrhea. Significant association was found between dysmenorrhea and class absenteeism (p<0.05). Conclusion: High prevalence of menstrual disorders was reported in the medical students which resulted in class absenteeism. Educating students about menstrual health by trained health professionals and teachers can help in reducing their psychological and physical stress.
