This paper aims at exploring the techniques and strategies employed in translating passive struct... more This paper aims at exploring the techniques and strategies employed in translating passive structure from English into Arabic at the United Nations, adopting a contrastive analysis technique. The study focuses on the passive structure. It sheds light on the techniques employed by the Language Services Department (LSD) at the United Nations (UN), examining if the drafting rules of Arabic in building the voice of the sentence are observed. The study employs a quantitative approach. Thus, the current paper aspires to highlight the techniques used at one of the best employers for translators as a step towards building syllabuses based on best practices in institutional translations for potential translators. The paper traced 9 techniques used in translating passive into Arabic. The paper concludes with recommendations for passive structure translation strategies and implications for translator training programs.

This paper presents a critique of hasty press translations of some socio-political terminologies,... more This paper presents a critique of hasty press translations of some socio-political terminologies, which have influenced the average Arabic receptors' perception of their living reality. These 'hasty' translations have been the natural result of successive information and knowledge explosions. Given the difficulty of knowing something about each discipline, a translator sometimes lacks the technical knowledge that enables him/her to fully understand many topics outside his/her specialty. Choosing the English word 'civil' as a pivotal term that had appeared before the 'Arab Spring' and was the subject matter of much controversy during and after these uprisings, this research paper tries to address these terms from 'domestication' and 'foreignization' perspectives. The research discusses the translations of the term 'civil' [مدني/ـة] as appeared in the Media Arabic, exploring other words that were added to the term, such as [الدولة المدنية], [الخدمة المدنية], and [المجتمع المدني].

The study focuses on the copulative sentence with "is" or "are" as a main verb. It aspires to shed light on the techniques employed by the Language Services Department (LSD) at the United Nations (UN), to examine if they are really following the drafting rules of Arabic in order to observe the idiomaticity of the Target Text (TT) (i.e. Arabic). The study employs a qualitative approach. Thus, the current paper aspires to highlight the techniques used at one of the best employer for translators as a step towards building syllabuses based on best practices in institutional translations for potential translators. The paper concludes with recommendations for copula translation strategies and implications for translator training programs.

This paper aims to explore the boundaries between Media Studies on the one hand and Translation S... more This paper aims to explore the boundaries between Media Studies on the one hand and Translation Studies on the other hand. It highlights the contact areas between these two disciplines and sheds light on the findings and insights of both fields, thus informing researchers in their quest to develop journalism teaching curricula and training courses. A foreign desk editor (FDE) needs to cross borders forward and backward between cultures depending on translation from one culture to another. However, a journalist usually faces many linguistic and cultural problems to achieve this task. Thus, the paper can be viewed as an attempt to bridge the gap between theory and practice in teaching journalists international communication and domesticating world news stories for a local audience.
