It was the period when the real impact of the effects on society of the passage towards a new phase of modernity had begun to be noticed: these major changes in economic forms and relations and the crisis within politics corresponded, in western societies, to an equally vast cultural change that pervaded daily life, ways of living and the shaping of relations. As Melucci 2 himself wrote some years later, we had passed from the "libertà di avere" (freedom to have, to own) to the phase of the "libertà di essere" (freedom to be), which implies a quality of existence that allows individuals to evolve new ways of thinking about themselves and of acting within, and for, the social sphere. This allows individuals to set themselves within a context that is constantly being evolved by the individuals themselves, individuals who are involved in an unending process through which they attribute meaning within a universe of meanings that automatically link them with 'the other' because these meanings exist and are both fed by and recognised within the inter-subject relations of the plurality of situations found in daily life. The unique features of late modernity have brought with them both the individualisation of actions and, contemporaneously, the transformation of the opportunities for 'identity' offered within a model connoted by a certain stability into a "process" (Melucci 1991). This process comes together within a social experience that would, otherwise, seem fragmented, given the multiplicity both of inter-subject relations and of social situations that are constantly being re-elaborated by the subject him/herself within his/her own life space, the day-today space that is not socially regulated (Melucci 1987, Farro 2006). Analysis of new movements has revealed that a new actor figure is emerging: one which has lost the features of a socially (objectively) determined actor and has taken on the guise of "subject". In other words of actors who link action for self and action with (the) others; who no longer feel they must play their socially ascribed role and who become the co-constructors of an action that has meaning for them but is, nonetheless, not done only to benefit "him/herself". The attribution of meaning by individuals becomes part of social processes, those social processes that lead to individualism but do not inevitably result in individualism. Or rather, that appear, as

This essay tries to understand the possible meanings of a rediscovery of the inner-life, from the point of view as well as of a social change.
