Tulsa? [11 Nov 2009|09:59pm]
I got my acceptance for Teach for America yesterday, and I'm still pretty stoked about it! I'm pretty sure I'm going to accept, but am not yet positive. For one thing, my regional assignment was Tulsa, which I was not at all expecting (it was about halfway down my list). After doing some research, I'm much more excited about Tulsa than I thought I would be, but I still have doubts. After being away from home for four years, I would like to be closer to my family, for one thing.Anyway, I'm here to ask whether anyone has any information about what TFA is like in Tulsa. I know it's a new region, but as I know very little about the city, any little thing you can tell me will probably be useful! Also, anyone else get an acceptance this week?

TFA Interview [27 Sep 2009|11:21pm]
Hi all,I have been invited to a final interview (yay!). I am wondering if you have any advice about what to expect, how to prepare, etc. I've looked through a bunch of the materials on the website, but I'd like to hear more from people who went though the process first-hand. I would love any recommendations, I am so nervous! Thanks,Dana

Just wondering... [05 Aug 2009|09:12pm]
[ **mood** | curious ] Hello!I'm planning to apply for the 2010/2011 TFA Corps. I'm curious about the new regions TFA has added. On the application were Tulsa, Dallas, and the Twin Cities even an option when you chose your "preferred" regions?I mean, how much will TFA accommodate your preferences? Thanks in advance!

2010 Teach for America corps - Summer Application [25 Jul 2009|06:42pm]
Hey!I was wondering if anyone was planning to apply during the new summer application period, beginning August 1st, 2009. I am pretty sure I am going to. Does anyone know if it will entail the same things as the 2009 application? The website does not give much information on the 2010 TFA corps application. According to the website, the first part of the 2009 application entailed: Personal InformationAcademic and Professional InformationInterview InformationSupplemental InformationWritten Information (letter of intent, resume, and essay)Well, good luck to anyone who is applying this year! I know that last year had over 35,000 applicants, with only 2,100 who were accepted. I'm sure the 2010 TFA will be just as competitive, if not more!-Shannon

Rio Salado vs. Arizona State [15 May 2009|11:21pm]
Hi all,I've just been accepted to Phoenix, Arizona, and currently I'm debating the pros and cons of getting certified through Rio Salado College vs. Arizona State University. The latter is a lot more expensive (particularly since I'm out-of-state), but you get your M.Ed. in two years. Rio Salado is considerably more affordable, is an online course, but it's only teacher certification and not a masters degree. Moreover, I'm not sure which route will be more/less stressful when paired with the demands of teaching.Anyone here in Phoenix who can tell me their experience with either? Thanks.

Pre-Institute Work [28 Apr 2009|05:27pm]
Has anyone started it yet? I'm putting it off until after my thesis and finals are over...For current/past/ambitious '09 corps members, how long did it actually take to finish? Did you find the reflections helpful? What were the best/worst/most useful/least useful elements of pre-institute work? Thanks!

Fourth Round Waiting List [25 Apr 2009|01:39am]
[ **mood** | anxious ] Hi! I am in the fourth application round for Teach For America and just learned this Monday (April 20th) that I've been placed on their waiting list. I hear there were more than a thousand individuals placed on the wait list this year, and just this week about half of those were informed they wouldn't be likely to receive offers, while the other half were (presumably) contacted and told they can reasonably expect to be admitted on a rolling basis between May 1st and May 18th. I, however, haven't heard anything either way. That being said, the people who said they received updates on their statuses were from previous application rounds. Now I'm wondering whether they were already immensely selective about who they placed on the wait list from this fourth/last round (meaning, anyone who was chosen for the wait list from the fourth round is part of the one-half that made the cut), or if they just haven't gotten around to sifting through us Round Four Waitlisters yet. It's all very confusing and I don't know how naive it would be to feel positively about my very vague status.I myself haven't received any follow-up information since Monday, but I have heard of people (who are currently on the wait list) being informed this week that they'll have their decision between May 1st and May 18th. (TFA says a choice few will hear before May 1st.) And I still don't know when I can expect to hear from them. Since I have not received any updates - negative or affirmative, I have no idea where I am in this process. My recruiting contact tells me those on the wait list should be hopeful, but I don't know whether this applies to me specifically or if it's just pretty-talk intended to keep people on the list. Do any of you have any insight in this matter? I would greatly appreciate it!

getting your region changed? [11 Mar 2009|02:50pm]
[ **mood** | confused ] Hey everyone,So I got accepted, and I am super excited! However, I didn't get my first choice .... I feel bad mentioning it, but the reason why this is a big deal is because my husband recently got a promotion, and so now I'm not sure if he'll be able to transfer his job like we originally thought he would. (I did only put our city in the highly preferred area though, and I also checked off the box that said my spouse could only transfer his job in the highly preferred regions.) If this is the case, he may end up out of a job, which puts us in a rather precarious financial situation. Has anyone had any success in appealing to TFA to switch their region assignment? I feel bad because the people I've talked to in Charlotte seem awesome. (In case you're wondering, my first choice of assignment was Atlanta.)I went ahead and emailed admissions to ask about it, but thought I'd check on here to see if anyone knew anything.

Anxious?! [02 Mar 2009|12:11pm]
Anyone else getting anxious to find out for the March 10 deadline?! I'm counting the days. I have been reading some back posts on here about people getting wait listed and such. Hoping it doesn't happen to me...but more so just hoping I get accepted. Hope everyone is doing well!

Transitional Grant v. Loan [17 Feb 2009|07:34pm]
Does anyone know how TFA decides whether they offer an applicant a grant or a loan. Because grants you don't have to pay back grants but you do have to pay back loans...I'm just a little annoyed because I was only awarded a loan, so the money I'm loaned will be taken out of my future paychecks. Just seems a little unfair. Thanks!

Tell me about your region! [01 Feb 2009|03:29pm]
I'm filling out the region preference form right now (gooo third deadline!). My interview is on the 12th, after which time the nail-biting begins.I definitely have my preferences for many reasons, but I want to hear what you current corps members think about your region. My big concern is transportation because I can't get a driver's license for medical reasons. So sell me on your region. Yes, your region. Is a car really that vital or preferable in XYZ region, even if the website says yes or no? What's the corps culture like? Why is your region just that awesome?Enlighten, please.

Some Concerns.. [25 Jan 2009|08:55pm]
I just got accepted to the 2009 corps in NYC. I have a lot of mixed feelings - I'm definitely excited, but also a bit nervous. I'm already a certified teacher, so the teaching part doesn't really bother me. What does worry me a bit is the actual area that I'll be teaching in. I'm from a total suburban town in NJ with little diversity. I'm not naive - - I know about the high crime and stuff in NYC. I'm just looking for some opinions or experiences that anyone might be able to offer about this aspect of TFA. Were you scared? How did you stay safe on the subway and on the streets? I don't want to sound like a baby, but I can't deny the fact that these things are on my mind. On another note, has anyone been placed in NYC and commuted in from NJ, or is it ideal to live somewhere in the City??Thanks a bunch!! =)
