This is carried out empirically using Irish data across the period 1987-2005 and is the first study to utilise these techniques in such a manner.

The majority of Irish elderly depend in fact almost exclusively on the state old age or retirement pension as their main source of income, so that such changes are expected to have a noticeable effect.

If earnings instability is as a proxy for risk, for risk-averse individuals, increasing earnings instability bears substantial welfare costs.

It is designed to estimate the revenue and distributional effects of national or EU-wide changes in social and fiscal policy. In order to provide European results, and for results at the national level to be comparable, it is necessary to make adjustments to the input microdata and to adopt assumptions about the relative value of incomes across countries.

Simulated spatially-referenced individuals from a spatial microsimulation model for Ireland (SMILE) who reside within the forest's catchment area are identified using GIS techniques.

Whilst a number of authors have commented on this trend, suggesting greater female participation in the workforce results in delayed maternity, to date little research has tested this proposition. We develop a model to consider the main trends related to the phenomenon of maternity postponement, considering changes in first and later births separately.

The stipulation from the EU water framework directive (WFD) that all surface waters in the EU must be of'good ecological status' by 2015 necessitate a quantitative understanding of the major determinants of water quality.

This paper analyzes how welfare states achieve insurance and equity objectives for residents who work in other countries. The aim is to evaluate the impact of unemployment benefits and income taxation on these frontier workers' welfare in Luxembourg and Belgium that exhibit similar welfare state objectives.

We emphasise the advantages of the first method.

Controversy arises from conservatives advocating fiscal responsibility and limited government intervention in a market economy. This supports the notion that taxes should be levied at the lowest possible level, specifically designated for the financing of the few public goods that only government can provide.

In the first place, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Dr. Cathal O'Donoghue, whose guidance and support from the initial to the end enabled me to develop this piece of work. He shared his knowledge, insightful comments and hundreds of thousands lines of code from previous work which built the foundation of this research.

Going beyond simple calculated replacement rates for” typical 'or” average 'households, we produce detailed distributions of net replacement rates in four EU Member States (Denmark, France, Spain and the UK) representing different welfare state regimes showing how many people in each country face different levels of replacement rates.

Amongst the main proposals, those focusing on sales tax and agricultural direct taxes seem relatively more attractive. The former has the highest share in indirect taxes and is also easier to collect, while the latter is intended to bring the presently exempted agricultural incomes into the tax net.

We then simulate, under the constraint of constant total net tax revenue, the effects of 10 hypothetical tax-transfer reforms which include various alternative versions of a Basic Income policy. We produce various indexes and criteria according to which the reforms can be ranked.

The simulation encompasses a decrease of social security contributions of the employees by 25%. The decrease in government revenue is compensated by a rise in the standard VAT rate. A distributional analysis of the welfare change is performed.

This is particularly true for Irish dairy farmers, as they are export-oriented and their grass-based production system is closely linked to the cycle of seasons.

It analyses the evolution of the redistributive forces in the system over the period and considers the effect of the incremental reform on the complexity of policy and resulting impact on incentives.
