Surface characterization studies were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Electrochemical and capacitive behaviors of Co(OH)2-ECF were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques in three and two-electrode systems. Our results confirmed the excellent supercapacitive behavior of Co(OH)2-ECF and reasonable cycling stability. These characteristics is originated from three dimensional structure of nanostructures which allows facile electrolyte transportation, in addition to the strong adhesion between Co(OH)2 and carbon fiber substrate. A specific capacitance of 1000 F g−1 at a current density of 3.1 A g−1 was obtained for Co(OH)2-ECF electrode.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of polycaprolacton (PCL) nanocomposite scaffold compared with hydroxyapatite (HA) on healing of segmental femur bone defect in rabbits

Artificial Cells, Nanomedicine, and Biotechnology, 2016

Segmental bone loss due to trauma, infection, and tumor resection and even non-union results in t... more Segmental bone loss due to trauma, infection, and tumor resection and even non-union results in the vast demand for replacement and restoration of the function of the lost bone. The objective of this study is to utilize novel inorganic-organic nanocomposites for biomedical applications. Biodegradable implants have shown great promise for the repair of bone defects and have been commonly used as bone substitutes, which traditionally would be treated using metallic implants. In this study, 45 mature male New Zealand white rabbits 6-8 months and weighting 3-3.5 kg were examined. Rabbits were divided into three groups. Surgical procedures were done after an intramuscular injection of Ketamine 10% (ketamine hydrochloride, 50 mg/kg), Rompun 5% (xylazine, 5 mg/kg). Then an approximately 6 mm diameter -5 mm cylinder bone defect was created in the femur of one of the hind limbs. After inducing the surgical wound, all rabbits were colored and randomly divided into three experimental groups of nine animals each: Group 1 received medical pure nanocomposite polycaprolactone (PCL) granules, Group 2 received hydroxyapatite and Group 3 was a control group with no treatment. Histopathological evaluation was performed on days 15, 30 and 45 after surgery. On day 45 after surgery, the quantity of newly formed lamellar bone in the healing site in PCL group was better than onward compared with HA and control groups. Finally, nanocomposite PCL granules exhibited a reproducible bone-healing potential.

Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two experimental groups, as follows: the diabetic IR group (G1, n = 10) and the diabetic IR + LLLT group (G2, n = 10). Ischemia was induced in anesthetized rats from the right femoral artery clipping for 2 h, followed by a reperfusion for 24 h. Then, the laser irradiation (K30 handheld probe, AZOR, Technica, Russia, 650 nm, 30 mW, surface area = 1 cm(2), energy density = 1.8 J/cm(2)) was carried out by irradiating the rats over a unique point on the skin over the middle region of the right gastrocnemius muscle belly three times (every 8 h), starting after initiating the reperfusion for 3 min. At the end of the reperfusion period, rats were anaesthetized and blood samples were collected and used for the estimation of pO2, pCO2, pH, HCO3, serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Subsequently, the right gastrocnemius muscle samples were taken for wet/dry weight ratio assessment and histological/biochemical examination. The pO2, pCO2, HCO3, and pH levels were similar for both groups (P > 0.05). The serum LDH and CPK levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05) for G2 compared to G1. In comparison to G1, tissue malondialdehyde level in G2 was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). In G2, superoxide dismutase activity was significantly increased compared to G1 (P < 0.05). Unlike G2, a significant decrease in the activity of catalase was observed in G1 (P < 0.05). The wet/dry ratio in G1 was significantly higher than that of G2 (P < 0.05). Histological examination confirmed that the extent of muscle changes in G1 was higher than G2 (P < 0.05). Finally, according to this study, LLLT has a beneficial effect on the IR muscle injury treatment in the diabetic rats. Therefore, we suggest that further research needs to be conducted using different laser parameters and examining response over a longer period of tissue recovery.

Forty male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups as follows: sham, sham + naloxone, IR and IR + naloxone. In anesthetized rats, hepatic ischemia was applied for 30 min in IR and IR + naloxone groups. Sham + naloxone and IR + naloxone groups were given naloxone (3.0 mg/kg, iv) 30 min before ischemia. After 24 h, blood and tissue samples were obtained for histopathological, tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and biochemical analyses. Histopathological study of liver in IR group showed enlarged sinusoids, sinusoidal congestion, cellular degenerative changes and necrosis. The kidney of the rats with hepatic IR showed pathological changes in tubular cell swelling, tubular dilatation, moderate to severe necrosis, glomerular fibrosis and hemorrhage. Histological examination confirmed the extent of hepatic and renal changes in IR group was higher (P < 0.05) than in other groups. Rats that underwent hepatic IR exhibited significant increase in serum concentrations of urea and creatinine levels (P < 0.05). The serum alanine aminotransferase and aminotransferase values were significantly higher in IR group compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). Liver IR produced a significant increase in hepatic and renal tissue MDA levels, while pretreatment with naloxone was associated with a significantly lower MDA levels (P < 0.05). The results of this study showed that naloxone pretreatment protected the renal injury from hepatic IR.

Research paper thumbnail of Morphometric analysis of low level laser therapy (780 nm) in transected sciatic nerve regeneration after end to end neurorrhaphy in rabbit

ABSTRACT Peripheral nerve transections represent common clinical occurrence. There are two main r... more ABSTRACT Peripheral nerve transections represent common clinical occurrence. There are two main requirements for a good clinical outcome after these lesions. The first is surgical treatment so as to make possible the regeneration of the transected nerve fibers toward their original periphery. The second important requirement for successful recovery after a nerve lesion is postoperative rehabilitation treatment. In fact, although the surgical techniques have proved to lead almost always to the regeneration of nerve fibers, the degree of recovery can be highly variable among patients. The objective of this study was to investigate whether 780 nm low level lasers could stimulate the healing process in the sciatic nerve regeneration in rabbits submitted to complete transection through morphometric analysis. Twenty adult white New Zealand male rabbits were used, where the injury of the type neurotmesis of the right sciatic nerve under general anesthesia (intramuscular ketamine/xylazine and atropine sulfate) was approximated using prolene 6- 0. The rabbits were randomly distributed in 2 groups with 10 rabbits each. In group I, Arsenate of Gallium Laser was used with the extension of wave of 780 nm, 10 mW powers with 1 J/cm2 irradiation with 10 seconds for each Cm2, in the pulsed form. The laser therapy was initiated on the post-surgical first day with application 10 minutes for each rabbit in group I, once a day for 15 days. Rabbits in group II had not given treatment (control group). The samples of transected nerves were collected and prepared for morphometric analysis on the 90 days, they were analyzed the average number of total counted fibers and the mean fiber density on proximal, intermediate and distal segments. On group I and II, the average number of total counted fibers and the mean fiber density on proximal, intermediate and distal segments was significant in each group. The differences found for total number of counted fibers and for fibers density between proximal segments of groups I and II were not significant (p=0.31 and p=0.17, respectively). On intermediate segments (injury site), the total number of counted fibers was significantly higher in group I (p=0.05). On distal segments, both the total number and the density of fibers were significantly higher in group I (p=0.03 and 0.001, respectively). The irradiation with low level laser (780 nm) influenced positively the regeneration of the sciatic nerve in rabbits after being injured and end to end anastomosis, becoming the nerve recovery more rapid and efficient.

Seven male native Iranian sheep (8-12 month) were randomly divided into two groups, 5 treatment and 2 controls. Sheep of both groups were administrated the lethal dose of 110 mg/kg body weight of dried oleander leaves. Animal in control group died within 41 to 56 hours after dosing of the plant. Clinical signs of toxicosis were developed within 60 minutes after dosing of the plant, such as distress, teeth grinding, anorexia, colic, vocalization, polyuria, moderate rumen distention, tachypnea and depression.
