If the maxim "networks matter" was discounted during a period dominated by economic theories of f... more If the maxim "networks matter" was discounted during a period dominated by economic theories of firms, considerable theoretical research and empirical evidence has since infiltrated the scholarly consciousness. If scholars previously modeled and encapsulated the environment within measures of competitiveness in product or supplier markets, we know now that the organization's environment is much broader encompassing its social network of external contacts. We also know that these external contacts have implications for the organization's survival and livelihood. For example, we know that firms organized in networks have higher survival chances and that prestigious partners help firms go to IPO faster and gain higher valuations at IPOs than firms which do not have these partnerships.
