Research paper thumbnail of Utilising natural rubber latex in improving ballistic impact performance of Unidirectional fabric systems

Unidirectional (UD) fabrics were coated with NRL and NRL filled calcium carbonate (CaCO3) using dipping technique. Two to three coated fabrics were assembled together with neat fabrics in 12-ply fabric systems and tested for ballistic impact using fragment projectiles to determine their ballistic limit, energy absorption and specific energy absorption. The results indicated that two NRL coated UD fabrics were sufficient to enhance the ballistic impact performance of the fabric systems. A 10% increase in ballistic limit and 17% increase in the specific energy absorption were obtained from fabric systems consisting of 10 neat and 2 NRL coated plies in comparison with all-neat 12-ply fabric system. The addition of CaCO3 in the pre-vulcanized NRL compounding did not give significant increase or contribution to the ballistic impact performance of the fabric systems. The mechanisms of fabric failure are briefly discussed in this paper.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Filler Dispersion on Tensile Strength and Tearing Energy of Natural Rubber (NR) Latex Films

Advanced Materials Research, Dec 1, 2015

Fillers play important roles in enhancing mechanical properties of NR latex films. The effect of ... more Fillers play important roles in enhancing mechanical properties of NR latex films. The effect of filler dispersion and amount of dispersing agent to the tensile strength and tearing energy of NR latex films were investigated in this study. The studies were carried out by (i) varying the amount of dispersing agent (Anchoid) added which is an anionic surfactant; and (ii) varying the speed of stirring during mixing of latex with compounding ingredients. It was observed that tensile strength and tearing energy were affected by both factors listed. In the case of NR latex film filled with 10 pphr of carbon black (Super Abrasion Furnace, SAF), the optimum stirring speed was 400 rpm and the optimum amount of surfactant was in the range of 5 to 10 % by weight. High tensile strength ranging from 29 - 31 MPa and high tearing energies ranging from 90.6 - 111.0 kJ/m2were achieved from optimization of these two factors; rendering their importance.

Research paper thumbnail of Potential Of An Andrassy And Mansuli Bentonite As A Drilling Mud Material

SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, 2003

This paper presents the results of laboratory treatment works on upgrading the bentonite from two... more This paper presents the results of laboratory treatment works on upgrading the bentonite from two areas of Sabah, Malaysia, namely Andrassy and Mansuli for the uses in petroleum industry. Bentonite, as a common material used in water based drilling mud is the sodium bentonite. Since the Malaysian bentonite is proved to be calcium based, certain treatment is needed to convert this bentonite to sodium variety. The successfully treated bentonite will be used as a material in drilling mud, which is cheaper as compared to the Wyoming and standard bentonite. This study included two treatment processes; wet treatment and electrolysis. Several sodium sources have been studied but only the sodium carbonate can successfully be used to upgrade the bentonite. The results obtained after these two treatment processes showed improvement in cation exchange capacity (CEC), which is about 27% increment for electrolysis treatment and 22% to 29% for wet treatment, respectively. However, the treated ben...

Research paper thumbnail of Compatibility of Palm Biodiesel Blends on the Existing Elastomer Fuel Hose in Diesel Engine with Approach of Dynamic Test Rig: A Concept Study

However, concern were arise that presence of alcohol, fatty acid component and other factors such as water content in the alternative fuels which is blended biodiesel fuel and different chemical composition from the diesel fuel may increase further uncertainty to the consumer of diesel engine or diesel engine manufacturers in terms of compatibility issue. Thus this paper intends to assess current and typical test standards on their efficacy of representing the fuel system of diesel engine vehicles. Respectively, ASTM D471 are based on laboratory immersion studies and the experimental conditions are differ from the real service conditions in the fuel system of diesel engine vehicles. Even though number of previous studies regarding to the compatibility of elastomer components has been repo...

Various drilling fluids have been widely used in the oil and gas industry to improve lifting capacity of drilled cuttings. In this study, the experiment was conducted using water based mud with Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) additive to study its lifting capacity. The study focused on the amount of MWNTs used, cutting size and mud annular velocity effect on the mud lifting capacity. The results show that lifted cuttings increase as the amount of MWNTs added increases. MWNTs associated with water based mud displays the stability against base mud since surface forces easily balance the gravity force and attached to drilled cuttings, resulting in increase of drag force acts to drilled cuttings and easily lifted cuttings to the surface. The MWNTs also will improve viscosity which will significantly increase carrying capacity of the mud. For small and medium cuttings, the improvement relatively simplified compare to the big cuttings. The impact will significantly increase as the annular velocity increase.
