Abrams and Siegel's answer to Allen failed to address some of the issues. In a secondary analysis of their data, it is shown that the experimental group indeed fared better than the control groups, although the treatment explains only a small proportion of the variance. The unsolved issues concern mostly (1) the adequacy of the control group and (2) the adequacy of the underlying theory.

Consequently, those of us who teach research methods have quite often had to face the task of lowering the resistance of their students before starting to teach and work through the course itself. This task is often made more difficult by textbooks that were for other students from other disciplines with other types of tasks and problems in mind. This book may be a good step in overcoming that obstacle. To be sure, it is mostly a textbook, and the subtitle that designates it as a handbook is largely misleading and may reflect some ambivalence the author had when writing it; however, as a textbook, it is one of the best I have seen. The book follows a conventional outline for research methods books. It starts with the basics-what is research and why do it; some of the elementary concepts, such as variables, theory, and definitions-and moves on to ethics (with a separate chapter on culture-and gender-sensitive research). The more technical part of the book begins with a chapter on defining the problem and searching the literature, continues with sampling and research designs (one chapter on group designs, one on elaboration and some principles of analysis, and one on single case), and then to qualitative research. Other chapters are dedicated to data collection, measurement, statistical testing, and computer uses. The 17 chapters will provide a convenient outline for any instructor who wishes to squeeze the whole into the framework of a semester divided into weeks (this, of course, will require some skipping and collapsing of two or more chapters into a single topic). The outline seems quite reasonable, although in some points I doubt the wisdom of the present division into chapters. For instance, following three chapters on design (plus one on qualitative research), there is a chapter on program evaluation. This form of presentation suggests that program evaluation is a separate, different way of looking at or analyzing the world. I would rather see a variety of examples from evaluation studies (the whole range, not only program evaluation) spread over all or most of the other chapters. Although it is true that most of the topics may be expanded, some topics are presented rather well (e.g., the chapter on ethics or the one on measurement), whereas others are clearly unbalanced. For instance, both the chapter on qualitative research and the one on statistical hypothesis testing are doing injustice to the topics. The problem is not so much in the need (if it is a necessity at all) to present a whole field in a single-chapter format but rather in the attempt to include everything despite the short presentation. The reader would be better off if these chapters presented some

This study examined a mediating and moderating model of the relationship between ethnic density and psychological distress in Palestinian Israeli adolescents. Data were collected from 777 Palestinian Israelis in public high schools by means of five Arabic-written standardized scales, and a demographic questionnaire. The findings partially supported the theoretical model. As hypothesized, the findings showed a mediating effect of perceived microaggressions between ethnic density and psychological distress; family support moderated this mediation effect. The findings did not corroborate the hypothesized moderating effects of ethnic shame and pride and of family undermining on the relationships between perceived microaggressions and psychological distress. However, family undermining had a direct effect on psychological distress. The categories for the heterogeneous populations did not yield any findings in terms of mediating effect. The findings suggest that complex relationships exist among the variables. The support for the important role of social support and for the mediating effect of perceived microaggressions as a mechanism that explains how ethnic density is related to psychological distress is congruent with minority stress theory and with former empirical findings. The relatively average to high economic status of the respondents, the limited variance of the economic status variable and the nature of relationships and attitudes towards girls and boys in the Palestinian Israeli community may explain some of the findings. Study limitations, future research and possible practice and policy implications are suggested. Keywords Psychological distress • Ethnic density • Microaggressions • Family support and undermining • Ethnic shame and pride • Palestinian Israeli adolescents Research has shown that mental health problems in general and in adolescents in particular, are associated with one's racial and ethnic affiliation. Specifically, having a minority status is a predictor of an increased risk for diverse types of mental illness and psychological problems (

First, there is the increasing frequency of contact with Jews, and second, there is the process of rapid modernization which involves secularization, disorganization of traditional social structures and changing norms. In this study the criminality of rural Arabs in Israel is analyzed in terms of culture-conflict. Interviews with prisoners and non-prisoners supply the data and the statistical analyses confirm the main hypotheses.

Results show the older Israeli and American samples to be more similar to each other and different from both the Israeli and American younger couples. Older retired nondistressed couples had significantly lower levels of distress, less desire for change in their marriage, and better perceptual accuracy of the changes desired by their partners than younger Israelis and younger Americans. The types of changes desired by the older samples include more desire far social contact with family and friends than do younger couples in both cultures, more desire for husbands' attention to appearances, and less sex-role-stereotyped responses for both sexes. However, some universal concerns of all married couples were pinpointed, including a wish to receive more attention when needed and ...

Acquisition of self-control skills is proposed as helping in eliminating enuresis. Seventy-seven enuretic children (aged 7 to 14) were randomly assigned to three treatment modes (bell and pad, token economy, and cognitive therapy) and to one control group. The self-control skills of children and their parents and the frequency of enuresis were measured before and after treatment. Results showed a negative correlation between self-control and enuresis on the one hand and between the acquisition of self-control skills and recovery from enuresis on the other hand. The results also highlighted the need for a follow-up period to determine the different longer-term effects of treatments.

The findings were centred around the readiness of secondary school youth in Israel to be involved in drugs and their active searching for drug involvement. A dependent variable based on five indices of drug involvement was constructed. It was then related to parental control, peer involvement in drugs, sex differentiation and membership in youth movements. A bi-modal high involvement curve was found, the first mode consisting of youth of low socio-economic strata who are drop-outs, who associate with outside peer groups as an alternative to their shaky and diffused families and lack of involvement in school life. The other mode consists of youth with a higher socio-economic background who are involved with drugs due to their desire for new hedonistic and emotional experiences. Their openness to experiment with drugs is a corollary to their involvement within a peer group which condones and legitimizes narcotics as well as any experiences which irrespective of their source, provide "a good high". There is a sub-group within this group which would be involved with drugs as a partial escape from personal problems.
