BULL. 3(6) 707-714, 1978.-In view of the demonstrated role of light and of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the m~nten~ce of circadian rhythms related to endocrine functions and as the mediobasal hy~thalamus (MBH) controls neur~nd~~ne activity, the effects of light and MBH stimulation on the electrical activity of SCN neurons were studied in rats. Out of 253 cells studied in the SCN, 32 celIs were antidromically activated, while 65 cells responded orthodromically to MBH stimulation. In another series of experiments out of 95 suprachiasmatic neurons, 11 were antidromically activated by MBH stimulation and 18 different SCN cells responded to continuous light. The present data, which demonstrate photic responses in suprachiasmatic neurons and direct projections from the SCN to MBH, are discussed in view of the current knowledge on the role of the retinohypothalamic tract and the SCN in the control of circadian rhythms.

However, talk of such notions often falls short of being explicit and formal. In this paper I present an algebraically couched theory of inferential similarity and spatiality, motivated by measurement theory, and I apply it to the discussion of meaning holism. I argue that the proposed theory offers new and improved conceptual resources for facing the challenges raised against the thesis. Keywords Inferential space • Meaning holism • Davidson • Measurement theory • Algebraic semantics 1 Meaning Holism and Semantic Instability Meaning Holism (MH) is a meta-semantic thesis: It consists in a feature (or component) of accounts of linguistic meaning. During the past two decades MH has been the subject of intense debate, and yet there is no general agreement regarding the content of the thesis [21, 22]. Still, a widely accepted articulation of MH is the following: Meaning holism is the view that the relations of a certain type (or types) among the expressions of a given natural language (all expressions, or many of them) are constitutive for these expressions to mean what they do. According to most versions of MH the relations that help constitute meaning are inferential relations (which are accounted for differently by distinct philosophers-see below). A wide variety of theories of meaning adhere to meaning holism, some of which are central to 20th century philosophy of language. One such theory is due to Quine [23, 24], where language is construed as an inferentially interconnected web that is

The present study examines how linguistic modality-auditory vs. textual--affects cognitive capacity for multitasking. Results show that text supports multitasking better than voice, that both the intermingling and combination of text and voice do not improve on purely textual channels, and that textual visual indications of speakers' identities do not improve auditory multitasking capacities either. In the discussion we consider the implications, applications and limitations of these results. This research is concerned with conversational multitasking: The involvement (either passively or actively) in several synchronous linguistic interactions at the same time. This practice is demonstrated, for example, by users of a va...

These thinkers represent widely different traditions of thought but the comparative analysis is fruitful in both directions and is concluded by a consideration of communication ethics in the light of Davidsonian and Buberian notions of intersubjectivity.

In support of this claim, I present in the first section of the paper an overview of “radical interpretation,” a notion used by Donald Davidson in order to account for linguistic communication. In the second section, I discuss the principle of charity (as it arises in radical interpretation), according to which interpreters must construe the beliefs and utterances of others as largely rational and true. In the third section, I begin to explore the ramifications the principle of charity holds for intercultural communication.

In their recent paper ''Do Accelerating Turing Machines Compute the Uncomputable?... more In their recent paper ''Do Accelerating Turing Machines Compute the Uncomputable?'' Copeland and Shagrir (Minds Mach 21:221-239, 2011) draw a distinction between a purist conception of Turing machines, according to which these machines are purely abstract, and Turing machine realism according to which Turing machines are spatio-temporal and causal ''notional'' machines. In the present response to that paper we concede the realistic aspects of Turing's own presentation of his machines, pointed out by Copeland and Shagrir, but argue that Turing's treatment of symbols in the course of that presentation opens the door for later purist conceptions. Also, we argue that a purist conception of Turing machines (as well as other computational models) plays an important role not only in the analysis of the computational properties of Turing machines, but also in the philosophical debates over the nature of their realization.
