Generally implemented in the course of 12 to 16 family sessions, Brief Strategic Family Therapy (... more Generally implemented in the course of 12 to 16 family sessions, Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) has been defined as, "…a family-based, empirically validated intervention designed to treat children's and adolescents' problem behaviors," with a particular emphasis on substance use challenges (Szapocznik, Zarate, Duff & Muir, 2013, p. 207). The authors of the approach identify two principal goals of BSFT: 1) the symptom focus of the intervention aims to "…eliminate or reduce the adolescent's use of drugs and associated problems"; and 2) the system focus emphasizes changes to "…family interactions that are associated with the adolescent's drug abuse." (Szapocznik, Hervis & Schwartz, 2003, p. 3). This paper provides an overview and critique of the model, followed by a case presentation of a hypothetical family (The Woods) that illustrates several core BSFT elements. The discussion concludes that BSFT provides a theoretically motivated, evidence-based framework for treatment of families with adolescents who suffer from substance use and other behavioral problems. While empirical support for the model is still in development, available data demonstrate the efficacy of BSFT and its capacity for effectively addressing the needs of culturally diverse families.

Nonparaphilic Hypersexual Behavior (NPHB) reflects the language of the current-if unofficial-diagnosis, a condition estimated to effect from 3-6% of the general population . The purpose of this paper is to present the hypothetical case of "Ryan"-a 24-year-old, self-identified gay man who seeks treatment for NPHB as a presenting problem. A literature review that examines outcomes data for NPHB provides preliminary support for the selection of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as an appropriate evidence based treatment. In addition, goal attainment scaling (GAS) provides the evaluation framework for an implementation plan that retains the individual needs of the client at the center of a collaborative, strengths-based treatment model.
