Indeed, the Indian victory at Little Bighorn led to recriminations and soul-searching within the United States, and Breveted Major-General Custer was either pilloried or excused for the rout. Over the years, and starting with Libbie Custer, the wife of the officer commanding the U.S 7th Calvary, the outcome of the Little Bighorn has been hagiographically constructed around Custer. Furthermore, existing literature on Little Bighorn has focused on issues of Custer’s defeat . Others have examined used archaeological research to examine the material remains of the battle. The few studies that have examined the battle from the Native American perspective have largely worked within the narrow agenda of a specific tribal group without accounting for the binding factor among the different native tribes who allied to fight the battle of the bighorn.

The announcement shall be made anytime, very soon, when the new month moon has been sighted by the authorities of the Sokoto Caliphate in Nigeria. The last time when the Nigerian Meteorological Agency attempted to use its technology to provide scientific precision to the announcement of moon sighting by announcing the date of the arrival of the new moon, it was sharply rebuffed by the Sokoto authorities who told the faithfuls to disregard the agency's date.

However, the analysis of how colonialism penetrated the interior of West Africa has largely been explained as a colonizing power single initiative. Indeed Laitin, while arguing against the dependency theory perspective which saw formal colonialism as the consequence of the propping up of areas where trade is necessary and where the undermining of legitimate indigenous authority would further colonization objective, submitted that in the case of Yorubaland, an alliance of missionaries and traders convinced the British foreign officers to protect their interests and thereby extending formal British colonialism into places not weakened by incorporation into the international economy and laissez-faire. The problem with this argument is that it treated the indigenous elites and authority as lacking initiative in the colonization process. The study argues that a faction of indigenous elites in Lagos in the chieftaincy dispute of 1850-51 appropriated both the anti-slavery rhetoric and the sympathies of the Christian missionaries for their specific political objectives but which later culminated in the formal colonization of Lagos.

Before delving into the crux of the analysis, it is pertinent to point out that the Civil Rights Movement was conceived from distinct historical contradictions of the personhood and citizenship of racialized individuals within the American idealized framework of equality and freedom and the Nigerian Civil War [1967-1970] boiled down to the national question, citizenship, and political rivalry within a colonially created and midwife African state. The questions that this study intends to contend with are: In what ways did black American civil rights activists construct the internationalization of the civil rights movement during the Nigerian conflict? How did this internationalization dovetail with U.S. foreign policy during the cold war period? From what angle did the black civil rights activists approach the Nigerian civil war and what were the conflict resolution strategies they pursued? Finally, what is the connection between black America’s engagement with the Nigerian civil war and the domestic struggles for racial equality and black improvement? The study argued that the Civil Rights Movement became internationalized under the rubrics of traditional black internationalism, and this informed the strategies pursued by the African American civil rights leaders during the Nigerian Civil War.
