This article provides three theoretical extensions to George Katsiaficas's understanding of t... more This article provides three theoretical extensions to George Katsiaficas's understanding of the “eros effect,” which is a concept for explaining mass political awakenings and spontaneous rebellions. Katsiaficas argues that moments of mass revolt ignite the human need for justice and universal solidarity. That solidarity then radiates outward, alluring people into revolt and creating a groundswell of radicalism. Katsiaficas's heuristic is used here as a springboard for further theorizing. To begin, the eros effect is grounded in the sentient body—that is, the body's ability to feel itself and the world in ways that precede and exceed not only perception and language, but any and all oppressive conditions. It is also argued that the sentient body is a reality-creating organism that is inhibited and/or hindered by various oppressive conditions. This tension between creation and oppression produces the conditions of mass revolt. Lastly, the phenomenon of bodily emanation is introduced to explain the magnetic allure of mass rebellion—spontaneous mass revolts emanate a tangible and experiential feeling that attracts people to radical activity. Overall, this philosophy of sentience, reality, and emanation provides a sympathetic extension of Katsiaficas's eros effect.

This particular phenomenon is often referred to as the vibe, vibrations, or some variation thereof. This essay rearticulates “the vibe” as bodily emanation: human beings emanate feeling that is experienced by and through our bodies. My study of bodily emanation begins with Edmund Husserl’s notion of affectivity and then moves to Eugene T. Gendlin’s notion of the sentient body. This discussion enables my own argument: Our bodies do not simply respond to the world in a sentient fashion, but also solicit sentience from one another. This solicitation of sentience is the basis of bodily emanation. I explicate bodily emanation through two realms of experience: the pre-conscious and the conscious. The live address included a PowerPoint presentation involving a series of images and videos.1 One of the great strengths of the Patti Pace Festival is the wide range of attendees, which include high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and professors. This address aims for a middle ground by targeting the undergraduate audience. The following syllabus is for a course on “social movement literacy” (SML). The course is curren... more The following syllabus is for a course on “social movement literacy” (SML). The course is currently being taught at Grateford State Prison (just outside of Philadelphia). The basic purpose of SML is to help educate students on how to properly read and understand the nature and function of social movements. SML is not reducible to learning about a handful of specific social movements; instead, SML establishes core skills and knowledges that enable people to recognize, discuss, perhaps participate in and, if need be, intelligently critique, the ideologies, political motivations, and tactics of social movements.

This essay provides observations of global justice rhetoric and suggestions for improving it. Fir... more This essay provides observations of global justice rhetoric and suggestions for improving it. First, I outline the scope of this paper by defining my understandings of global justice and rhetoric and then situate myself as an activist and communication scholar. Second, I provide ten observations of global justice rhetoric. These observations are not intended to be exhaustive and I am not trying to speak for other activists. Instead, these observations are intended as contributions to global justice thought and practice. At the very least, these observations can serve as a point of discussion among activists, and at the very most, help activists become more aware of and reflective about their rhetorical practices. Third, I provide five hands-on suggestions for improving activists’ rhetoric and communication. These suggestions are of course relative to each activist and each situation. There is no one way to improve one’s communication. However, concrete guidelines can help activists ...
