Hey ho people It's that time again. This community didn't do much last year, but I'm going to give another go at it.This time, instsead of doing good in tens all by yourself, maybe we could try to do things in groups. Well... So, the whole Halloween through New Years thing wasn't enough time to really get this idea started. Although jeanine pettibone put us all to shame, that's for sure.So here's a revision to the original concept. New Years, 2007.Goals?How about lots of people in this community recording good stuff they do? :D Start working towards your 2006 good deeds quota...NOW!Merry Christmas, happy all other holidays. ok Here is what I have come up with regarding my last post.Please please let me know what you think.1. Everyone e-mail me recipes. I think the ideal would be something like 10 side dishes, 10 main courses, 10 desserts, something like that. Or we could do a holiday cookie book, a holiday dessert book, whatever.2. Someone e-mail me a cover with a title. Or there could be multiple covers.3. I will undertake the task of trying to sell the cookbooks for sure. Since all information will be sent via e-mail or this here lj post, all of you could print copies and try to sell them as well. 4. We will all determine costs for the books.5. Charities will be chosen where the funds will be donated. Each person will report how many books they sold and when they have donated the money.All that you have to do, really, to participate in this project is to send me a recipe or 2.Does this sound good to anybody? I have scoured several charity sites but it seems that what is needed more than goods is just plain money, at least for people who are of a cooking age. With us all selling books, there will not be any concerns about dishonesty with money, and as for sending funds where they're supposed to go...well...I guess we can't be 100% sure, but if you go to all that trouble just to make a few dollars for yourself...pht. A prestigious appointment Ladies and um well for now, ladies...I am happy to announce that our own sweet Cheri is going to be our official "charity sniffer." I have asked her to keep us updated on charities that would need our help. I'd really like to see not only a lot of hours, but also a variety of organizations or groups or what have you that need assistance.One of the groups I found a long time ago is called Afghans for Afghans. Despite the name, they also send over hats, mittens, and things like that. I like the fact that they ask for items as opposed to money to buy items. They give guidelines as to what not to put on things being donated to a Muslim country, which i also think is high class. Currently the next deadline for materials is sometime during the first quarter of 2006. Ok!I'm not up to ten yet but I'm going to keep track of my Red Cross stuff here each week because otherwise I'll never realize when I get to ten. So... 2 hours volunteering at the Red Cross' Emergency Food and Shelter program.(And I think it might be cool to have an idea of who we're helping as well, so when there's an interesting person or group I'll comment on that as well)One of the groups we helped was a mom with eight kids from Somalia. The kids were ranging from 18 years old to 3 years old. Also I donated $15 to the Red Cross earmarked for earthquake relief in Pakistan. So we'll chalk that up as a ten and I'll have to give five more at some point to chalk up the next ten... :) (2 Comments |Comment on this) |

Welcome! Every year, when Thanksgiving comes around, there is immense pressure to give some nameless amount to charity. There are the food drives, the turkey donations, the Salvation Army money gatherers in front of stores. I don't know about you, but I always feel horrible around the holidays as I slip a dollar or two into a Salvation Army collection can on my way to drop ten packages of gifts into my car. And people need help beyond Thanksgiving, beyond Christmas. So this year, I want to start early, and I want to give a gift to you all as well. I want us all to do as much as we can, but I want to track it here. This is not a competition. This is a group effort. Starting tomorrow (Halloween) and lasting until January 1, 2006, I want you to post every time you do something in tens.The ten can be anything. If you volunteer, post here every time you have worked for ten hours. If you are a crafter and you want to give ten afghans at a time to a charity...post every time you do that. Go to a website where a click means a donation, and post every ten days that you do that. If you make a care package with $10 worth of items, post here.On January 1, we will look through all of the posts and see how much we have all done to help better our world. Ideally, of course, this will continue year-round, but at the least we will start a new year with the knowledge that we participated, in a large group, in an effort to better our world, our community, our state, our nation, what ever and whom ever you help.I cannot stress enough that this is not a competition but rather a team effort. If someone is able to give more than you, don't sweat it, but rather cheer that person on. This is not about who gives the most money or who sends the most care packages. it is about us forming a community here and accentuating the good that we all are capable of. As we need suggestions or support, I hope we can come here to share. But mainly, I want the posts to be reports of what you have done so that it's easy to track at the end of each time segment.If you have any questions or comments or suggestions, please post them here. I would like to add more to our "interests" so that we are more likely to catch people who would want to help, so if you have ideas for that, let me know as well.I am really looking forward to working with you all to try to make a difference this holiday season and beyond.
