No. 1 Baseball falls to Texas State, 6-4 (original) (raw)

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 1 Texas Baseball fell to Texas State, 6-4, on Wednesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field to split the midweek series between the teams.

The Longhorns (12-2) will now head to the state of South Carolina for the next five games. Texas will take on South Carolina in a three-game series this weekend before playing College of Charleston on Tuesday and The Citadel on Wednesday.

Texas started fast, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer by Eric Kennedy. The Longhorns added a run to their lead, going up 3-0, in the second inning when Ivan Melendez drove in Douglas Hodo III with an RBI single.

Texas State answered in a big way in the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits including a three-run homer. The Bobcats added another run to its lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning.

The Longhorns bullpen was strong in the second half of the game with Jared Southard, Joshua Stewart, Marcus Olivarez, Lebarron Johnson and Luke Harrison all pitching a scoreless inning apiece.

Texas got a run back in the fifth inning after Kennedy walked and Melendez singled to put two runners on. Murphy Stehly drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Justin Eckhardt got his first start of the season, pitching 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout and only allowing one hit.

Melendez went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and one RBI, while Stehly was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
