• Sustainable, Safe, and Inclusive: UNDP Supports Phuket and Phang Nga Toward Sustainable Tourism and Inclusive Tsunami Preparedness. . Niamh Collier-Smith, UNDP Resident Representative to Thailand 🇺🇳🇹🇭, emphasized the importance of tourism in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving SDG Localization at the 25th International Island Tourism Policy Forum (The 25th ITOP Forum 2024) in Phuket. Alongside the Governor of Phuket and tourism representatives from 10 countries, she highlighted that the COVID-19 crisis has reinforced the need for environmentally conscious tourism that benefits local communities, creates jobs, supports inclusive economies, and adapts to climate change. . In addition to her participation in the forum, UNDP representative met with community leaders in Rassada District in Phuket, promoting a community-based approach to sustainable tourism. This initiative aims to benefit locals while preserving the environment, serving as a model for other communities. Rassada is one of the villages where UNDP has been actively supporting sustainable tourism initiatives. . Furthermore, UNDP representative visited Phang Nga province to engage with the Chumchonthai Foundation and local teachers about comprehensive tsunami preparedness. UNDP, in collaboration with Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Office of the Basic Education Commission, has been working to enhance tsunami preparedness in over 270 coastal schools with support from the Japanese government. . • Promote Business & Human Rights among Businesses in Asia-Pacific 💼🌏🚨 . UNDP, in collaboration with ILO, UN Women, OHCHR, UNICEF, UNEP, & the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG), with support from the Swedish government, EU, & Government of Japan, organized the 6th UN Responsible Business and Human Rights Forum (RBHR Forum), Asia-Pacific from Sept. 25-27 at the UNCC in Bangkok & online. Pol Col Thawee Sodsong, Thailand’s Minister of Justice also attended for the opening of the Forum to promote business & human rights. . This year's forum centered on enhancing access to remedy across the region. With over 60 sessions, including panel discussions, roundtables, training, & networking opportunities, the forum provided a platform for meaningful dialogue & engagement among multi-stakeholders. Over 1,000 participants from various sectors attended, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing responsible business practices throughout the Asia-Pacific. ✨ . Additionally, UNDP welcomed a delegation from the Nepali government visiting Thailand to learn about Thailand's progress on Business & Human Rights, especially the implementation of the National Action Plan on Business & Human Rights. • Moving towards a net-zero society by leading with the example of a Green Parliament. UNDP is sharing approaches to building a pollution-free, Net Zero society at the event "Declaration of Intention for a Green Parliament Aiming for Net Zero by 2032." This event, organised by the House of Representatives, Thai Parliament, aims to promote and raise awareness the understanding about greenhouse gas emission and ways towards a green society with both the public and private sectors, as well as stakeholders who are driving Thailand towards the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.   Sustainable development is driven from villages, communities, provinces and countries and global community. .UNDP continues its collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, the European Union, and other UN agencies in Thailand including UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and UNODC, to drive local and national efforts with the governors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the SDG Localization approach, where the UNDP emphasizes the importance of local knowledge, practices, and community-driven solutions. The focus is on bottom-up solutions and inclusive decision-making by local people leading to responsive solutions. .Niamh Collier-Smith, UNDP Resident Representative in Thailand, shared her vision on SDG Localization, emphasizing that local actions driving global goals reflect the United Nations' global support for integrating local knowledge and mechanisms into the SDG approach to meet local needs. . From 2023 to 2024, UNDP has been implementing the SDG Localization project with funding from the European Union and in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior to develop provincial SDG progress report (SDG Profiles) for 15 pilot provinces.   🏋🏽46.6 Kilotons of hazardous waste🔋Green Parliament in action to solve the biggest E-waste issues in ASEAN. .UNDP, in collaboration with the Thai Parliament and partners, is organizing the "Going Zero E-WASTE with the ASEAN Community Center" campaign on Thursday 19 September 2024, from 8.30 AM to 12.00 PM at Seminar Room B 1-1, B1 Floor, Parliament Building. The event aims to raise awareness about electronic waste issues and drive forward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while continuing UNDP's commitment to the development of "Green Offices and a Green Parliament". . The Unwaste project by UNEP and UNODC reveals Thailand and ASEAN are the world's biggest dumping grounds for illegal waste, which poses high ecological risks, and highlights corruption and bribery issues in waste management systems. Under the Basel Convention, UNODC's inspection found that Thailand imports and exports more than 46.6 kilotons of hazardous waste per year (1 kiloton per 1,000,000). The illegal e-waste products were auctioned at the Bangkok Port for the purpose of melting and casting for resale hazardous Substances list .
