*blink* [28 Aug 2009|08:27am]
DOVER, Del. (AP) — A judge has refused to dismiss a murder charge against a man accused of running over a rescue worker responding to a traffic accident. But New Castle County Judge Jerome Herlihy indicated in a ruling Thursday that prosecutors may have trouble getting the murder charge against Joseph Taye to stick.Taye is charged with driving a car that struck and killed Michelle Smith of the Delaware City fire department in December. Under state law, a person who kills a firefighter on duty can be charged with murder.Attorneys are arguing whether Smith, who attended fire school but never fought fires and worked only as an emergency medical responder, met the definition of firefighter. The judge said the question is one that must be answered at trial. It's murder if ya hit a fireman but not if ya hit an EMT or medic? WTF?

3 cops, suspect dead after California traffic stop [22 Mar 2009|02:37am]
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29817606OAKLAND, Calif. - Three police officers are dead and a fourth in grave condition after gunfire at a traffic stop on Saturday led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout and the suspect's death, Oakland police said. Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped a suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason. One of those officers later died. The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic. At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect, who had barricaded himself in an apartment building, police said. Police said the suspect, 27-year-old Lovelle Mixon, of Oakland, fired an assault rifle at officers who came into the building to arrest him. Two officers were killed and a third was grazed by a bullet, police said. Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said police returned fire, killing Mixon. **Officers identifiedThe slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, who was killed at the first shooting. The two members of the SWAT team who were killed at the second location were Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35. Officer John Hege, 41, is in grave condition. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was a tragic day for police officers. "All four officers dedicated their lives to public safety and selflessly worked to protect the people of Oakland," he said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those lost, the Oakland Police Department and law enforcement officers throughout California during this difficult time." Police said Mixon wielded two different weapons, one at the first scene and another at the apartment building where he was hiding. Hours after Saturday's shootings near a busy intersection just blocks from a police substation in east Oakland, people were still at the scene of the first shooting as police tape blocked off streets.Mo Wiley, 32, of Oakland, said emotions still are raw from the shooting of an unarmed man in January. "Oakland is a beautiful place," Wiley said. "But I just hate when it gets ugly like this." Tension between police and the community has risen steadily since the fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer at an Oakland train station on Jan. 1.Stay safe out there guys.

State Troopers question [21 Mar 2009|06:00pm]
Good afternoon everyone,My question is mainly aimed towards the police officers/state troopers in the community. I'm 21 years old and I'm currently applying to become a State Trooper in my home state. It's basically a childhood dream that I want to live out. The huge application I need to fill out requires me to be 100% honest due to the fact a polygraph will be given asking the same questions over again. Now, I'm no angel whatsoever. I've never been in the drug scene, not even marijuana, however I have a small history of the underage drinking, supplying minors, and 1 occasion where I have driven under the influence (I was never pulled over). This is a career that I've kept in the back of my mind for a long time, and thus I have been nothing but honest throughout this whole application process. My question is should I prepare myself for the possibility that they won't even consider me, due to my history in said events? I'm slightly nervous that the things I've done in the past are going to jeopardize my chances of living my dream.Thank you for your time and stay safe.

Nasty Cheese. [12 Feb 2009|05:31pm]
[ **mood** | amused ] I wanted to talk about this because no one else but firefighters will get it. Mods: if this isn't appropriate to the community, feel free to delete it. Today I was treated to a friend's home smoked cheese. He has a small smoke house and was inspired to put some mild variety of cheese in - out it came smoked with supposedly a lovely flavor. About a week later, said cheese made it to my home.I popped a piece into my mouth. My nose was immediatley clogged with smoke. My first thought was "this must be how disgusting it is to smoke cigarettes". My SECOND thought was: "this must be what it tastes like if I lick my bunker gear". ONLY someone that knows that smell by heart would get what I mean - it tasted exactly the way well seasoned turnout gear smells. Needless to say, I didn't taste the underlying CHEESE at all, and I was pretty grossed out. I ate a piece of chocolate, but for the rest of the day every time I inhaled through my nose I did a double take to make sure I wasn't actually on a fire scene.

this just in - DE hit-and-run LODD update [30 Dec 2008|08:53pm]
Troopers from the Collision Reconstruction Unit at Troop 2 formally charged Joseph Taye, 28, of Bear approximately one hour ago with Murder in the first degree. This charge was upgraded from Manslaughter due to Michelle Smith of the Delaware City (DE) Fire Company losing her life while performing her duties. Edward Reiss' injuries (the motorcyclist she was treating) charge of Assault 2nd was changed to Assault 1st due to the severity of Mr. Reiss' injuries. The charges of Driving while Revoked, Leaving the Scene of a Crash and Failure to Report a Crash remained the same. Mr. Taye was committed to Howard Young Correctional Institute without bail. This case is still very much active. Investigators are seeking to identify the operator of the Honda as well as locating that particular vehicle that fled the scene of the crash with Taye in the car. At the time of this release, Mr.Reiss is still in Christiana Hospital in stable but serious condition.Take care-BE CAREFULBillyGThe Secret List 12-30-08 / 2030 hourshttp://www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com

As you know, Smith was operating at the scene of a motorcycle crash Saturday evening when she was struck and critically injured. Her injuries were too severe and she has now tragically died in the Line of Duty. The Delaware City Fire Company was providing ambulance coverage for the Wilmington Manor Fire Company that evening. Upon arrival at the crash, and initial assessment of the patient, FD Ambulance Driver Michelle Smith, 29, was assisting the EMT on scene with patient care. A County Police Officer stopped to assist with traffic control, as rescue and fire police units from Wilmington Manor began to arrive. A vehicle that attempted to avoid the incident scene struck the County Police vehicle and then swerved around the Delaware City BLS unit, striking Ms. Smith. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene. Ms. Smith was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics and EMT's from Wilmington Manor and Goodwill Fire Companies. HOUSTON (AP) -- An insurance company is arguing in court that a policy it issued that excludes payments for pollution prevents the families of three people killed in a 2007 Houston office building fire from being compensated because the deaths were caused by smoke inhalation and not the actual flames. Great American Insurance Co. has asked U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal in Houston to rule that the deaths caused by the smoke, fumes and soot will not be covered by the policy because there is a specific exclusion for pollution and it mentions smoke, fumes and soot - more here.

The ATV was a Polaris Ranger belonging to one of their firefighters, and himself and another firefighter were riding when they were struck by a car. The ATV flipped numerous time and ejected both riders. One suffered minor injuries, but the other is not as fortunate. He is currently in an induced coma with swelling on the brain of 35%. The surgeons cannot operate until the swelling is below 20, and they have informed his wife she might have to make a decision. Please keep Andrew Johnson and all of the Archer Lodge Fire Dept. and family in your prayers today. Update:A CT scan showed half his brain is mush (nice doctor term there) and theres no activity in the other half. They changed his drugs while I was there and are waiting on some more family to get in from Massachusettes, and unless there is some significant change in the next few hours his wife will have him taken off life support. Hes not done for yet, but hes really damn close. Thanks for the prayers thus far.

Any one here ever hear of using a wall hydrant as a standpipe connection?A neighboring mutual aid volunteer company has a new mall going up and plans on using the wall hydrants as standpipe connections in the event of a fire. There are standpipe connections, but they plan on using the wall hydrants, also.Has anyone EVER heard of this? I think someone is going to get seriously hurt when they hook up a 2.5" line and turn the wall hydrant on and the building's fire pump kicks on and pumps 150+ psi out of it. Especially since it is much harder to gate the pressure on the wall hydrant with the weird valve to turn it on and off.I've tried to look up some NFPA/ICC guidance on the issue but haven't found anything yet. I was always under the impression a wall hydrant, like a yard hydrant, was a method of supplying a pumper off a private service main.

From the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation: Did you know that the law requires the U.S. flag be lowered in tribute on only a few days each year? Quite appropriately, one of these days is the observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. On October 16, 2001, President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all Federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law 107-51 requires this action to occur annually in conjunction with observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. Let your local media know that U.S. flags across the country will be lowered on Sunday, October 5, 2008. This includes the U.S. Capitol and the White House, as well as buildings in your local community. Remember to lower the U.S. flags at your home, fire department, and business. Encourage your local community to follow the Federal Government's example. When you lower your flag this year, you will recognize the brave men and women who died protecting their communities from natural and manmade emergencies and disasters and those who carry on the proud tradition. You may also want to ask your state and local officials to include lowering the flag in a proclamation recognizing the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

LODD Announcement - Maryland [28 Sep 2008|09:56am]
FORESTVILLE, Md. - September 28, 2008 - -- A medical helicopter carrying victims of a traffic accident crashed in a suburban Washington park early Sunday after reporting bad weather, killing four of the five people aboard, authorities said. The helicopter pilot, a flight paramedic, an emergency responder and one of the traffic accident victims died in the crash, authorities said. Another person injured in the traffic accident survived, and was rushed to a hospital by ambulance. It was foggy and rainy in the area about the time of the crash, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Decarfel.Maryland State Police fly the medical helicopters in the state, and it was their first deadly crash since 1986 when a helicopter went down in fog in West Baltimore.Story continues belowAdvertisementJust before midnight Saturday, the helicopter reported bad weather on the way to a Prince George's county hospital and the crew said it needed to land at Andrews Air Force Base, where it was to meet ambulances to take the accident victims the rest of the way to the hospital, authorities said. The helicopter then disappeared from radar and officials lost radio contact. Public safety officials found the wreckage about two hours later on a trail in a wooded area of Walker Mill Regional Park. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were investigating.Maryland State Police Aviation Command flies 12 twin-engine helicopters out of eight bases across the state. The last fatal crash in 1986 killed two troopers who had just transported a shooting victim. The command had two other fatal helicopter crashes in the 1970s.A recent state legislative audit faulted the police agency for failing to document maintenance needs and costs and failing to comply with federal and manufacturer repair orders. Nine of the choppers are more than 18 years old.But state police have defended the command, and the audit noted that the operation is highly regarded throughout the nation and has an "impeccable" safety record.State lawmakers are likely to face major budget cuts in the coming months that could threaten a three-year plan to replace the helicopters.

This project is called Normal Sinus Rhythm, and took place for the first time today. Please go give it a look if you have some time and check out the original posts by each blogger and perhaps leave a comment! If you have any ideas for themes you'd be interested in, please let me know or leave a comment at the blog. We look forward to submissions from Peter Canning (author of Paramedic and Rescue 471), and Kelly Grayson (author of Life, Death and Everything in Between: A Paramedic's Memoirs), who have both agreed to be a part of this project. Thanks so much for taking a look!(x-posted like a fiend!)

EMS LODD in DE - 06/17/08 [17 Jun 2008|05:48pm]
ANGOLA, Del. (AP) - A paramedic and a patient being transported to a hospital were killed in an ambulance crash early Tuesday after the driver tried to avoid a deer in the roadway, authorities said. Betty J. Hall, 82, and Sussex County paramedic Stephanie L. Callaway, 31, both of Lewes, were ejected when the rear of the ambulance struck a row of trees, police said. Emergency medical technician Brice H. Hickman, 47, of Dagsboro, who was helping attend to Hall, also was thrown from the vehicle. He was listed in serious condition at Beebe Medical Center. The driver of the ambulance, Michael E. Wissman, 34, of Frankford, who was wearing a seatbelt, was admitted to Beebe in stable condition. The crash happened about 2:40 a.m. along a wooded section of state route 24 as the ambulance, with its emergency equipment activated, was transporting Hall to Beebe from the Renaissance Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Long Neck, investigators said.According to state police, Wissman swerved onto the right shoulder of the highway after seeing a deer in the road. The passenger side wheels left the road, causing the rear of the ambulance to strike a tree, ripping open the side of the ambulance and ejecting the occupants. The ambulance struck some other trees before coming to rest on the right shoulder.Hall was pronounced dead at the scene. Callaway was taken to Beebe, where died of multiple traumatic injuries, police said.Officials said Callaway, who was married and the mother of two small children, was the first Sussex County Emergency Medical Services employee to die in the line of duty in the department's 18-year history."This is a devastating loss to our department, to the fire service and to the entire regional EMS community," said Sussex EMS director Glenn Luedtke.

Fire Department scandal boils over! [16 May 2008|02:01pm]
COLWYN, Pa.-May 15, 2008 (WPVI) -- It was a raucous night at Colwyn Boro Hall in the wake of this scandal. Council voted to appoint Richie Guerra as the new fire commissioner but until he can get the fire company reorganized, they have asked neighboring Darby Fire Company to respond to fire calls. The meeting was peppered with accusations from younger members of the Colwyn Fire Company against the older social members of the company, many of them former firefighters. Volunteer firefighter Joe Ballerino was hot under the collar. "When I almost lost my life fighting a fire, where were you? Sitting in the bar getting drunk." That didn't sit well with former firefighter & mayor John Fitzgerald, who declared, "I'm not a social club member, I'm a firefighter member!"Ballerino fired back. "When we risk our lives for the citizens of this boro, where were you? In the social club getting drunk. That's all I have to say."Councilwoman & social member Kathy Brennan shot back on behalf of her husband, also a former firefighter. "He's been a fightin' fireman, was a fightin' fireman at 21 years old. He did more fires than you did!"Story continues belowAdvertisement The heated debate comes exactly a week after state police & the Liquor Control Board raided the fire company amid allegations an illegal speakeasy was being operated inside. They hauled away liquor and video poker games but tonight Assistant Fire Chief Earl Reed was trying to deny anything illegal was going on, claiming "What gamblin' machines? Has it been proven there's gamblin' yet? No!"The idea that a so-called social club where liquor was being served out of the firehouse did not sit well with most here tonight.Boro Council President Tonnette Pray told the packed meeting, "We want a fire company that's free of alcohol. We are a dry boro."The meeting ended abruptly with the mayor storming out in anger over council's actions.Tonight there are indications this battle is far from over. Assistant Chief Reed is threatening to sue the boro, and threatening not to allow any new fire company to use the equipment, saying its their equipment.(Copyright ©2008 WPVI-TV/DT.
