Most of the time Tosh can convince herself and everyone else that she doesn’t care. Sometimes on her own at night in her immaculate, empty flat she gives into her hurt, cries herself to sleep, whispering her hate for Owen and Gwen into the pillow. Nights like tonight she gets blind drunk, kisses a stranger and walks home alone, pausing only to shout at the stars.
She’s just getting into her stride when she spots him. Gwen’s bumbling, oblivious boyfriend, the last thing she needs right now. Though from the way he makes a bee-line for her the moment he spots her, Tosh suspects that he’s not quite so oblivious anymore. She can feel the anger coming off him in waves, and although she resents his invasion of her bolthole she acknowledges that she’s spoiling for a fight and he’s the best prospect in sight. Accusations, resentments and insults fly thick and fast from the moment he reaches her booth. They snipe and snarl at each other over the shared knowledge that neither of them wants, before falling into silence, broken only by Rhys ordering another drink for them both. There will be many more, and just as much honesty before either of them can begin to face going home.
In the circumstances she expects the sex to be quick and violent, that’s how these things are supposed to work, she thinks. All anger and revenge. Instead it’s almost obscenely tender. Resentment and rage do not leave scratches, bruises or bite-marks on the skin of either, pity and alcohol do not leave a bitter taste in their mouths. There is only understanding and forgiveness here. She wakes to find him watching her sleep, and is surprised to be greeted by feelings of affection rather than recrimination. They both know without discussion that this morning won’t be repeated so they savour their stolen moment while they can. Eating breakfast in bed and enjoying the feeling of broken hearts healing, just a little.
She shouldn’t be dancing with the groom but given that the bride has been gently mooned over by at least two of her workmates on the dance-floor, she reckons she’s earned this moment of weakness. He’s a surprisingly good dancer, for all he lacks Jack’s flair, she likes the way Rhys effortlessly matches her pace, never feeling like she’s struggling to keep up. Normally she hates to be spun but with him she feels safe, enjoying the illusion that he’d never let anyone hurt her. They part on a reminder that they could both do better, before stealing Owen and Gwen back from each other, with only the tiniest of regrets. Love will always overrule logic in both their hearts.

The cell is tiny. The bunk-beds that they’re chained to take up most of the room. In the circumstances it might be expected that they would take advantage of the brief moments of privacy to rest in separate beds. They do not.
She curls tight at his side, the serge of his uniform solid and reassuring under her broken fingers. Listening to his tales of plans and schemes, talking together of a girl walking the earth and a foe they both know well dancing blindly towards his doom. They do not speak of the horrors they endure in this aerial prison, nor the dark stain that is spreading across his uniform despite her careful bandaging. His breath is growing increasing laboured and she can feel the deep burn of infection in her side and leg. The compulsive shakes come more often now, and the hand gently stroking her hair brings little respite.
She focuses on better times. Remembering secret meetings deep in the jungle, back then the Amazon rainforest was one of the few places that the Toclafane couldn’t penetrate Flora too dense for those flying monstrosities, fauna too aggressive for their human foot soldiers. Hope and spirits had been high back then, rumour came from South Africa about a lightning strike that might bring them all the answers they needed, and a girl already more than half myth was arriving with a tale to tell, and the need for a better cover story. Plans are being formed and schematics drawn up, so she steals moments away from the bustle to talk with the young woman about field medicine. The tension seems to seep away in those quiet times and they can both pretend that Martha’s an ordinary medical student preparing to go off on voluntary work with Médecins Sans Frontières. He enjoys watching Grace play teacher, much as he values her strategic thinking, he never feels he’s doing his job right if his medical officers aren’t getting to do theirs. The storyteller moves on, and the mood darkens, especially when scouts into Nauta bring back news of Japan’s fate. Soon enough they have other things on their mind, the soldiers come, with an army of flying horrors that not even the jungle can keep at bay.
She feels his hand still in her hair, coming to rescue on the grubby shoulder of her once pristine white coat.
“Cheer up, Dr Holloway, at least we’ll always have Peru.”
She knows what he’s not saying, and she’s unsure whether she wants to laugh or cry with frustration at his stubborn, old-fashioned pride. Instead she does neither, simply plays along with his transparent ploy.
“Here’s looking at you Brig.”
His laughter is quietening, chest no longer rattling and gurgling. The poisons cease to flow through her circulation, halting their steady advancement on her heart. They sleep soundly in spite of their injuries, they have a better comfort than knowing this too must pass. They know the truth. All this will never be.

Summary: The drunken ramblings of Peri Brown and Adam Mitchell
Prompt: Peri Brown / Adam Mitchell / placing blame
“He wasn't always like that you know?” Peri said as she pulled herself upright in the booth again. She'd been having trouble sitting up straight for the past half hour, but she hadn't given up the fight yet. Unlike her drinking partner who had propped himself up against the wall.
“Unlike what?” Adam questioned as he took a sip of his drink, “A complete wanker?”
“I wouldn't have put it that way, but yes.” Peri frowned at him, then at her glass, then at the bottle before giving in and pulling herself over to the wall as well. “When I first met him he was the kindest man I'd ever met. Me and Erimem used to tease him about it. He'd never have just left me. He'd never have left you. Not like that.”
Adam grimaced and snapped his fingers twice. He no longer found the sensation of the panels in his head opening weird, but he was still afraid he'd forget it was open and a bug or something would fly into his brain. “What happened then? I shouldn't have to worry about bugs flying into my brain. It was a mistake. An honest mistake.”
Peri nodded at him as she tipped the last of the bottle into her cup, “When I first met him he'd have forgiven a mistake. Or at least have fixed your head. I thought he would have still done that even after he changed. Clearly I'm wrong though because I'm here aren't I?”
“Changed?” He didn't say anything else for a second as he held the empty bottle up to a passing waitress. “So what changed him?”
“Death. He died, but he didn't die, but he did because he wasn't my Doctor anymore. Thought he was, but clearly he wasn't.” Peri giggled bitterly into her cup before sinking down to lay on the bench.
“So he died, but he didn't die and that made him an asshole?” Adam took the new bottle from the waitress in exchange for some money and set about refilling his cup. “That makes no sense you know.”
“I know.” She held her cup above the table for Adam to fill, “One minute he was all nice and beige and crickety and the next he was loud and multi-colored. Only the multi-colored came later, after he changed. He liked words. Big words, small words, non-words, ishes. He once made me go to a conference about words. A dictionary conference. It was the words that tricked me. Made me think he was the same.”
They drank in silence then until the bar closed and they were forced to stumble out into the street. “Is my forehead closed?” Peri looked at the offered head very carefully before nodding and almost falling over. “Oh good. Sometimes it isn't and that always causes problems.”
“Not always.” Peri pulled him over to lean against the wall, “I wouldn't have met you if I hadn't noticed it open. I'm a good thing.”
Adam nodded at that. She was a good thing. Peri was nice and hadn't screamed at his head. “You didn't scream at my head. Most people do.”
“I've seen scarier things. Thanks for buying me drinks.” She looked a bit lost then before smiling up at him.
“I should get you home. Where do you live?” he asked as he dug around in his pocket for cab fair.
“No where,” she gave that bitter laugh again. “I'm in the wrong country, thirty years into the wrong time zone, and I don't have any local currency.”
“Come on then,” he held the money up triumphantly and used her to support his way over to a cab. “I have a couch. It's a good couch.”
“Couch it is.” Her voice rang with false cheer as she slipped into the backseat and scooted over. Her eyes shinning brightly before she turned to look out the window. The ride back to his place was quiet for the most part. Peri continued to look out the window, her reflection in the glass showed silent tears streaming down her face.
It was with some hesitation that he reached out and touched her shoulder when they arrived. He carefully helped her out of the cab and once again used her for support to walk to the door. Once inside they made it to the couch before Peri started crying full force. Her tears had the same bitter sound to them as her previous laughter. He held her close as she cried hating the Doctor a bit more every time she questioned why he'd left her. https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/14094.html?view=comments#comments fic public amaresu 896172 0 https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13989.html Mon, 22 Sep 2008 15:25:28 GMT Support Post: Week Ending September 28th livii https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13989.htmlAnd here's the support post - asking for betas, chit-chat, anything and everything goes here! https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13989.html?view=comments#comments !support post: ending september 28 public livii 1408977 1 https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13666.html Mon, 22 Sep 2008 15:23:58 GMT Claim Post: Week Ending September 28th livii https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13666.htmlAnd we're back! Summary: The TARDIS is alive, Sarah knows, in some way that's almost beyond the edges of her ability to comprehend.
Notes: Got this prompt a few weeks ago and forgot to post it at the time, so yay for break week. ;)
The TARDIS is alive, Sarah knows, in some way that's almost beyond the edges of her ability to comprehend. It has something that she calls a voice, a song, but only because she hasn't any other words for it. She hears it in a way that doesn't involve her ears, or any other senses that she knew she had before.
She's probably just being silly, but she thinks it likes her. It's always easy to find the rooms she needs, even when she's sure they weren't there yesterday, and when they've been on an escapade and she walks back into the control room, there's a sense of warmth, of coming home, that she's never felt anywhere else, even with her aunt.
***
Some days she talks to the TARDIS. Her self who never pretended to be Aunt Lavinia and never seized the chance to creep into an old police box knows that she's being daft, but that person is a long way away now. Harry's gone, and the Doctor is so hard to talk to at times. Not, she hastens to add, her palm flat against the wall, that the TARDIS would be her last choice of conversation partner, but in her world, you didn't really think to talk to machines.
She thinks that maybe she feels a shiver in her fingertips, like a tiny electric current, and she's almost sure she can hear laughter in the back of her mind. Strangely, it sounds rather like the Brigadier.
***
She dreams of the voice still, sometimes, all these many years later with her life so different from the things she'd imagined for herself then. The whispering song filters through her mind while she sleeps and she wakes up thinking she can fly.
"Can you contact her?" she used to ask K9 on those mornings.
"Negative, mistress. The TARDIS is superior technology and does not wish to communicate with this unit."
So she knew he'd tried at least. Maybe he could hear her too.
***
It's a morning after one of those dreams that she wakes up to the sound of materialization; so familiar that she's standing at the back door in slippers and pyjamas before her eyes are fully open. She waits, and eventually the door opens but no one comes out, so she crosses the garden and goes inside.
"Doctor? Donna?" She wonders what face he'll be wearing this time, and almost simultaneously realizes that she knows he isn't there. The song in her dream was cold and empty.
"You've come for me, haven't you?" she says into the echoing space, running her fingers over the edge of the control panel. "Come on." The lights on the instruments flicker and dance. "Let's go and find him."
The door shuts behind her and her head fills with stars as the time rotor begins to move. https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13340.html?view=comments#comments fic public carawj 440720 2 https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13085.html Tue, 16 Sep 2008 18:10:11 GMT Break Week livii https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/13085.htmlSorry - completely forgot to put up the claims post. Words: ~950
Summary: Without the Doctor, all they have is each other.
Notes: Based on the Doctor Who Unbound 'Sympathy for the Devil' so this takes place in that alternative universe. Oddly, there are far more spoilers for 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs' than the Unbound audio.
John wakes chilled and disorientated to find that she’s already left his bed. Dawn is just breaking across the capital, and in the early light he sees her standing at the open sash window, the breeze wafting the dark curtains and her long strawberry blonde hair obscuring her face.
"Liz?" His voice sounds rough, and he’s dimly aware that in the commotion yesterday he’s probably strained it. He clears his throat and tries again. "Liz, what are you doing?"
The clock on his bedside reads that it’s not quite five ‘o’ clock. He knows it was gone two by the time they’d got back to his flat; him dazed and exhausted, her fighting against tears. Her lab coat is hanging on a hook on the back of the door, his beret on the next peg over. The rest of their clothes are still strewn haphazardly across the carpet. It would be nice, he thinks, if one day she'd come back to his without a national emergency first. He no longer deludes himself that it'll happen though.
Liz doesn’t move, doesn’t turn to him. She’s wearing his uniform shirt, and it’s very nearly long enough on her to pass for fashion these days.
"It’s still burning," she says, her voice carrying clearly, her tone matter-of-fact; a scientist making an observation. He knows her well enough to understand that the clinical detachment is just a front. She wouldn't be standing there at this hour if she didn't blame herself for not finding an alternative course of action.
He struggles from beneath the tangled sheet, using it to cover his modesty as he makes his way to her. Every muscle feels sore, and his left shoulder protests all movement regardless of Sullivan’s assurance that it isn’t dislocated.
She has mascara in dismal grey lines down her cheeks, he notices, though her eyes are dry now. She's still beautiful, but it hurts to see her so defeated and he focuses instead on the world through the window.
Outside, in the distance, he can see the smoke still rising from the centre of London. The fires seem finally to have been brought under control if not completely dowsed. Come the morning proper he'll be back down there helping the Regulars with the clean up operation, as they in turn sneer at him and UNIT in general and doubtless make snide remarks regarding the Brigadier's almost inevitable hangover.
These last few years have taken their toll on everyone; he knows he's not the man he once was either. Once, he would have mourned yesterday's loss of life, now he's only relieved it wasn't so much worse.
But that's something to worry about later. Tucking her hair behind her ear, he kisses her temple and finally she looks him in the eyes.
"There must’ve been a better way. I keep thinking, if only we’d…" She trails off, shaking her head. Then, taking a deep shuddering breath, she says, "He didn’t need to bomb the bloody city."
"The Brigadier," John starts wearily, "was just doing what he thought-"
"Oh, sod the Brigadier," she says, almost spitting the words out. "He doesn't know what he's doing! None of us do."
He flinches at the vehemence in her voice though it's difficult to argue the point. "We have to try, Liz. There isn't anyone else to do it."
She shudders, and he reaches round her to pull the window down even though he's fairly sure that isn't the problem.
"This isn't what I expected when I agreed to work with UNIT. Aliens and monsters are bad enough, but our own friends working against us!"
"No," he agrees, anger lending a hard edge to his voice, "No one expected that."
She closes the curtains, plunging the small bedroom into shadow, and leans against him. He wraps his arms around her automatically, and she returns the gesture. "He'll… They won't actually execute him, will they? He's not well, the stress, all that business in Wales…"
Shaking his head he admits, "I honestly don't know." Part of him, the part he's ashamed of but seems to rear its ugly head more frequently than he'd like these days finds it hard to care. He'd thought Mike Yates had been a friend, he'd respected him as an officer, but there seemed to be nothing left of that man in the one the redcaps had dragged away screaming that humanity didn't deserve to survive. Perhaps it'd get to them all in the end, not the stress as much as the continual failure to make things any better.
"The Brig'll put in a good word," he says after a moment. The Brigadier who is still trying where plenty would have given in, even if he needs a scotch or two to shore him up. He doesn't have long left as CO, John knows; this'll probably be the final straw as far as Geneva is concerned. "Course, we both know how much his word is worth right now. He's just bombed London, and evacuation or not, no one's going to thank him."
Something that is almost but not quite a laugh escapes her lips. "Everything's gone to hell since I started as Scientific Adviser, John. Sometimes I wish I'd stayed in Cambridge and never met any of you," she murmurs it against his skin though, and holds him more tightly.
"You've got us this far, Doctor Shaw."
He leads her back to the bed, checks the alarm's set for seven, and simultaneously hopes that the morning never arrives.
She kisses him, desperate and lost, and he kisses back, his eyes closed against the growing light in the room.
In the darkness, he thinks maybe they can convince themselves that what they've got really is good enough.

Summary: "I've met a few Prime Ministers in my time," Anji said, shrugging her shoulders." ~ 720 words
"It'll be three thousand for the connectors," Anji said, pushing a piece of paper across the table.
Harriet picked up the paper with a look of deep disgust on her face. "This is a philanthropic organization, Miss Kapoor. We don't have thousands of pounds to throw around on bits of alien space junk. Oh yes, I know it's space junk you've scavenged. I've seen a few aliens in my time."
Anji laughed. "Haven't we all? It's still three thousand, though."
"Special discount for the former Prime Minister?" Harriet sighed as Anji just grinned. "So the position no longer commands respect with our nation's young adults, I see."
"I've met a few Prime Ministers in my time," Anji said, shrugging her shoulders. "And presidents and kings and more than a despotic tyrant or two. Happens when you travel through time and space with a man who, despite all his protestations to the contrary, has a bit of an authority kink."
Harriet frowned. "Quite likes overthrowing duly elected authority as well, I should say."
"Well, you know. He's a hippie. It's a thing. He has to have some flaws. Hey, that's better. Smiling suits you."
"Miss Kapoor," Harriet said again, "I have two thousand with me, and enough to buy you a drink. Will that do?"
"Keep your money," Anji said, with a smile. "I was just winding you up. I'll have a glass of red, though."
*
"Margaret Thatcher," Harriet said, with as much calm dignity as she could muster, "was a groundbreaking but very misguided woman."
Anji sighed. "We'll never see another like her. Pour me another glass."
"You've had four already, Anji," Harriet said, patting the other woman's hand gently.
"You've had five!"
"I hold my liquor well," Harriet said, hiccupping softly.
"You know who could hold her liquor? Good old Maggie. She drank me under the table in Dublin, after she'd got British money back in British hands."
"So, about the new carbon footprint reduction plans," Harriet said loudly. Anji groaned, and signalled for the waiter.
*
"Prime Ministers who can hold their liquor, or not quite, as the case may be," Anji said, licking her lips appreciatively.
Harriet looked up with a start from her position between Anji's legs. "You did not - tell me you didn't - "
"Authority kink," Anji said. "I'd have gone for Tony Blair when we met him, but he's just not my type."
Harriet nodded. "Bit of a weedy looking man, really."
"Now Pitt the Elder – far more handsome than history may have suggested. He – oh, there."
*
"Now listen," Anji said, combing her hair with her fingers as Harriet put on a bathrobe. "The Doctor wanted you to have those connectors, but he also wants you to be careful. He couldn't tell me too much, but he said it would be important in the future. He thinks so, at least."
"Something the Doctor doesn't know? Fancy that."
Anji smiled. "He's not a god. But he has been playing with his timeline a lot lately. And I think he's sorry, even if he's not sure what for yet."
"How - " Harriet started, looking confused. "You've got an earlier one, haven't you. How does he know about what he'll do in the future, then? How does he not stop it from happening?"
"Did you know," Anji said, zipping up her boots, "that we visited an alternate universe with no soft serve ice cream? Socialist to boot, but it was the lack of soft serve that really rankled."
Harriet shook her head and smiled. "How awful. Just tell me you weren't interested in Saxon. I couldn't bear it."
"Not a chance," Anji said, grinning. "I'm not actually evil, you know!"
"Just a bit wrong-headed about economic policy; well, we can live with that." Harriet put a hand on Anji's shoulder. "Do take care, won't you?"
"And you," Anji replied. "That's some serious equipment you're working with; keep yourself safe. Britain might need you again, you know. The world, come to think of it."
"I'll try," Harriet said, and a moment later, she was standing alone in her doorway, watching Anji stride off into the night. At the end of the street, Anji turned, and raised a hand in salute; Harriet raised hers back, and held it in the air until Anji disappeared from sight. https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/11269.html?view=comments#comments anji kapoor harriet jones fic public livii 1408977 2 https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/11214.html Sat, 23 Aug 2008 13:54:50 GMT safcooper https://the-randomiser.livejournal.com/11214.htmlAppalling 'poetry' is appalling, but it's somehow appeared on my open word document where my Liz/Benton fic is failing to appear, so I must now get rid of it. As such I'm inflicting it upon you lovely people. Forgive me. I hope you guys are doing better with your prompts.
Prompt: Two/Five/a dragon.
“My giddy aunt!” Two exclaimed. “I think I saw a dragon!”
“Oh, dear,” said Five, “I rather think you’re right.
“I should have known that this would happen,
“It’s been that sort of night.”
“I hope you don't blame me, young man, I didn’t put it there!”
“Calm down. Let’s think. We must find a way out,
“If it breathes fire while we’re trapped in it’s lair,
“We’re scorched without a doubt.”
“Roar,” the dragon sighed. “Roar,” it sighed again.
“You know,” said Two, scrabbling to his feet,
“I don’t believe this creature’s heart’s in it's campaign,
“Hello, friend! We’re please to meet-”
“NO! Spit him out,” Five called out, clutching at his hearts.
“If he dies, I cease to be,” he said with abject fright.
“It’ll be a dreadful paradox, and when one of those starts,
“It’s a headache to put right.”
“Grmph,” moaned the dragon, “Tastes funny anyway.
“Now get off my land, you Lords of Time, I want to take a nap.”
Two landed in a heap; Five rushed across the way,
“A headache, my dear chap?”
“Well, what,” Five asked, “would you have done?”
“Now, now, dear boy, that’s not the point.”
“You’re safe, my method worked, so please don’t moan
“I didn’t mean to disappoint.”
“You didn’t,” Two smiled, “I’m grateful, you should know.”
And proving it, he grabbed Five, and gave him quite a kiss.
“We should,” Five said reluctantly, “find Jamie and Turlough,
And get back to the TARDIS.”
But first, flushed quite red, they kissed some more.
“I said,” the dragon snarled, “you two, get gone!”
The Doctors shared a look, agreeing; as the dragon gave a vicious roar.
“When I say run, let’s RUN!”
