“What’s going on?” Brian asked Sirius as he bustled him and the children upstairs. About eight witches and wizards had arrived and Mrs Weasley and Sirius had immediately started escorting them up the stairs.
Sirius sighed, “They’re going to get Harry.”
“What all of them?” he asked confusedly. He seemed to be voicing what the children were thinking as they all stood stock-still to listen to Sirius’ answer.
Sirius smiled, “Yes all of them and ten more who are positioned around London and Surrey.”
“Really that many?” Fred asked.
“You’re not stupid Fred,” Sirius said, “You know as well as I do that the death eaters would do anything to get their hands on Harry.”
The children just looked at him dumbfound, “There’s going to be death eaters out there?” Ron asked.
“Probably,” Sirius said as he went to step down the stairs, “There’ll be a meeting in a few of hours. It’ll be a short one but dinner will be late, so you might want to fill up on sweets or something.”
“Sirius,” Brian called, “Will Severus be there?”
Sirius looked over his shoulder, “If all goes well on his end, yes he should.”
Brian nodded and watched as Sirius disappeared. He was just about to walk up the stairs to his room when the twins grabbed him and pulled him into Ron’s room.
“What the?”
“Relax, here have a wand,” George said as he chucked a liquorice wand at him. Hermione, Ginny and Ron came in and sat down with him.
“So, you’re pretty close to Remus and Sirius,” Fred said.
“And Snape,” George added with a shiver.
“Yeah what is with that?” Ron asked
“Um…” Brian began but was interrupted.
“The thing is Brian, we figure that you’re probably treated differently than we are, what with you being an adult and all,” Ginny said.
“So you see, we want to know what you know,” Hermione finished.
“I don’t know anything,” He said.
“We don’t believe you,” Fred said simply.
“No seriously I don’t. I don’t know anymore than you do.”
“You’re allowed to roam about during meetings and you’re trying to tell us, that no one has told you anything and that you haven’t heard anything?”
“I swear. Anytime I ask something, I’m just given cryptic answers, even when I asked if Severus was single, I wasn’t given a straight answer, just told that his job was too dangerous for him to get involved with me.”
George sighed, “He doesn’t know anything,” he said as he helped himself to a liquorice wand.
“Hold on… is Snape gay?” Ron asked him.
Brian blushed, “Um, he’s your professor right?”
They all nodded.
“Well then I don’t really think it’s my place to say.”
“He’s so gay!” Fred said gleefully.
“I’m going to go up to my room now,” Brian said as he tried to stand up.
“Don’t be silly,” George said as he and Fred pulled him back, “Lets have a game of exploding snap.”
Brian looked at the girls for help but they just smiled at him as they sat down for a game too.
Meanwhile, downstairs Remus was going over the flight plan with the Order members who would be joining him in the Advance Guard; Nymphadora Tonks, Elphias Doge, Hestia Jones, Mad Eye Moody, Sturgis Podmore, Dedalus Diggle, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Emmaline Vance. The Rear Guard, led by Bill included people such as Charlie Weasley, Oliver Wood, Roger Davies and Fleur Delaceur. Generally young witches and wizards who had a keen eye and were good on a broom. It was deliberate that the older more powerful wizards be guarding Harry directly, with Tonks as the exception. This was only because she was an auror and had extensive knowledge of defensive spells.
“We’ll head out to the back door, and when Fawkes sends us a feather we’ll go. Understood?” Remus said to them all.
Everyone nodded and took their brooms with them as they headed out the back. They would be apparating to the edge of Surrey and flying from there to the Dursley’s’ house. It would only take them a half hour to get there but would take about two hours (weather permitting) to fly back.
They all stood in a circle in the back garden and waited for Fawkes’ signal. Sirius sat at the back door and watched them all. He really wished he was going with them but knew he couldn’t and had resigned himself to that fact. Remus looked back over his shoulder and winked at him just before Fawkes’ feather appeared and then he and the rest of them were gone. Reluctantly he went back inside to await their return.
Three hours later, Sirius was really beginning to bug Molly and the rest of the Order as he paced back and forward.
“Sirius will you please calm down,” Dumbledore pleaded with him, “If anything bad had happened we would know by now.”
“I think I have the right to be just a little bit concerned Albus,” Sirius said with a scowl as he continued his pacing.
It was about fifteen minutes later when they heard the front door opening. Sirius rushed out into the hall and was relieved to see both Harry and Remus standing there. He embraced Harry in a tight hug.
“Sirius I need to breathe,” Harry said.
“Oh right, sorry,” Sirius smiled at him before hugging him a little more gently.
“Sorry Sirius, but Harry needs to go upstairs just now,” Molly said.
“Right, I’ll see you in a bit,” he smiled as Molly dragged him away. Once up on the first floor, Sirius turned to Remus and gave him a deep and passionate kiss, “I was worried,” he explained when they broke apart.
“Alastor made us circle for a bit before we landed,” Remus panted out as his mind raced with all the kinds of dirty things he would love to do to Sirius right now He would really need to get him worried more often.
Sirius smiled up at him knowing exactly what Remus was thinking, “Come on, Snape’s here and getting impatient.”
“Severus is here?” Brian asked as he came out of the makeshift hospital room.
Sirius just rolled his eyes whilst Remus sighed, “I honestly think you best push anything you feel for him aside Brian,” he said, “It’s not exactly safe for him to be getting involved with a muggle.”
“So everyone keeps saying,” Brian said dejectedly, “But I still don’t understand why. I mean what does that mean exactly?”
“Gentlemen?” Arthur said as he poked his head round the door, “We need to start,” he told them.
So yet again, Brian was left wondering exactly what it was everyone meant by him being too dangerous for Severus.
An hour later, Snape halted as he saw Brian sitting on the bottom stair once again.
“Hi,” Brian said shyly.
Snape rolled his eyes, “Okay, I think we need to talk,” he said as he grabbed Brian and pulled him into Sirius’ hospital room.
“I just, I never got the chance to thank you for getting my clothes for me,” Brian said quickly.
“Your welcome,” Snape said, “But look. I know how you feel about me and believe me I’m flattered. And if it were at any other time in my life I would seriously consider taking you out to dinner,” Brian smiled slightly at that, “However, with the work I do for the order, if anyone was to find out I was seeing a muggle not only would you be killed but I would be too… and slowly. It’s just not safe.”
Brian’s face fell, “Why? What kind of work is it you do?”
Snape sighed, he didn’t really know what to do about this, “I’m a spy Brian,” he said as he pulled up his sleeve, “I take it Remus explained to you what this is?”
Brian nodded. He was slightly in shock. He had heard about the Dark Mark before but had never seen one.
“Do you understand now why nothing can happen between us?”
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I’ll stop bothering you.”
Snape gave him a pitying look, “When the war is over, if I’m still alive and you’re still single then send me an owl and we can maybe meet up or something.”
Brian smiled, “Can I… can I have just one kiss? You know …just to know.”
Snape hesitated, but by hesitating he gave Brian the opportunity he needed and before he knew it, Brian had him pinned against one of the beds. Snape couldn’t help himself. He hadn’t been kissed like that in a long long time. Wanting to feel more he wrapped his arms around Brian as he kissed him back.
When they broke apart Brian smiled at him, “See you around Sev,” he said before he disappeared up the stairs to his room.
Snape stood in shock for a moment, realising he had just been had and that he now wanted nothing more than to finish that kiss… oh that Brian would have made a good Slytherin. Sighing to himself he straightened out his clothing and quickly left the house trying his best to banish thoughts of sexy Geordie muggles from his mind.
At dinner, Sirius tried to explain to Harry what he had been missing and what was going on with the Order. But Molly shouting at him and Remus kicking him under the table stopped him. He had also wanted to tell him about his and Remus’ relationship before any of the children did and hopefully in private. But his hopes of this were dashed as Harry turned to Brian.
“Sorry, I didn’t catch your name. I’m Harry,” he said holding out a hand to shake.
“Um, I’m Brian,” Brian said shaking Harry’s hand.
“So are you a member of the Order too?”
Brian laughed, “No, I’m merely here for my own safety.”
“What do you mean?”
“Remus is my ex,” he said pointing to Remus who was trying his best to keep Sirius calm, “I was brought here because apparently the death eaters were after me because of our relationship.”
“Oh, so you’re… gay then?” Harry asked as he turned to Remus.
“Yes. Will that be a problem?”
“No,” Harry said with a blush, “Just wondered why you hadn’t said anything before.”
“I didn’t really know how to go about it,” Remus told him with a smile.
“Did my Mum and Dad know?” he asked.
“Of course they did,” Sirius said as he sipped his tea.
Harry looked at him curiously before looking back at Remus and then back at Sirius, “Are you… are you gay too?”
Sirius just looked at him, “Yup. I didn’t tell you because I wanted to tell you face to face.”
“So are you… y’know, together?”
Sirius and Remus looked at each other before turning to Harry at the same time with matching smiles, “Yes.”
“Oh,” Harry said, slightly taken aback before turning to Brian, “So is that why you’re Remus’ ex then? Cause he got back with Sirius.”
“Um… no. Me and Remus just weren’t working out and I kind of … pushed him away,” Sirius snorted at that, “He’s better off with Sirius. I was never any good for him.”
Harry nodded seemingly happy with that explanation before he sat up straight, “Hold on… how do we know you’re not a spy for the death eaters? I mean if you and Remus had broken up…”
“He’s a muggle,” Ron said matter of factly.
“You’re a muggle?” Harry asked him.
“Yeah. But I pretty much know all about the wizarding world and everything in it.”
“Hence why his life was in so much danger,” Remus said.
“So…” Harry said turning back to him and Sirius, “How did you two get together then?”
“What this time or originally?” Sirius asked him.
“Both,” Harry said with a smile. Sirius noticed that they had the attention of the entire table, including Brian.
“Well, originally it was your Dad. He got sick and tired of us ‘moaning’ about our so called unrequited love for each other…” Sirius started.
“We really were completely oblivious about each other’s feelings,” Remus added.
“Anyway, so it was at the end of our sixth year and exams had just finished when your Dad suggested going on a kitchen raid to celebrate,” Sirius told him, “But on the way, he hexed us unconscious and dumped us in a cleaning cupboard. When we came to we found a note saying that we were locked in there until we…,”
Remus coughed and kicked Sirius under the table again.
“Well, you get the idea,” Sirius finished. The children all giggled and Brian, Tonks, Molly and Arthur all smiled.
“Well what about this time?”
“This time wasn’t so dramatic,” Remus said, “We had been living here for about a week and there was an Order meeting. It was relatively long-winded and boring,” Tonks and Arthur giggled at that, Sirius gave another snort and Molly elbowed her husband to stop him from laughing. Order meetings weren’t boring. They were deadly serious, “And Sirius fell asleep near the end, so after everyone left I carried him up the stairs and put him to bed. He woke up as I was getting undressed and then… well we made love,” he finished with a soft look at Sirius who was looking at him with adoration.
“Ew!” all the boys said, “Too much information,” Fred added.
“I think it’s romantic,” Hermione said and Ginny nodded agreeing with her.
“Right well, it’s well past all of your bedtimes,” Molly said to the children, who all moaned, “No arguments,” she said as she began ushering them out.
Harry came over and gave both Sirius and Remus massive hugs, “Night guys,” he said before leaving.
“I should get off to bed too,” Brian said but as he did so an owl flew in through the window and landed in front of him. It was bearing a letter addressed to him.
Taking the letter from the owl, Brian was about to open it when Remus grabbed it off him, “It could be from a death eater,” he said before giving it a sniff. When he recognised the scent he stared at the letter as if it had spat on him before handing it back to Brian, “It’s from Severus.”
“Oh, um I’ll just take it up stairs with me,” Brian said as he took the letter and left the room. The owl went with him obviously having been told to wait for a reply.
“He’s not managed to win Snape over has he?” Sirius asked.
“Brian likes Snape?” Tonks asked in shock.
“Oh yeah, big time. And Severus likes him,” Remus said.
“How do you know that for sure?” Molly asked as she set the dishes washing themselves.
“I can smell it,” he told them, “Plus Brian told Sirius he liked Severus.”
“Oh, so do you think that Severus will get involved with him?” Arthur asked.
“It would be pretty foolish for a man in Severus’ position to get involved with a muggle would it not?” Molly asked.
“Maybe that’s what the letter is about?” Sirius said, “Maybe he’s explaining that nothing can happen between them.”
“Well whatever it is, I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough,” Remus said as he stood, “In the meantime Mr Black, how does a bubble bath sound?” he asked as he walked out the door.
Sirius practically jumped off his seat and ran after Remus at that. They hadn’t had a bath together since they were teenagers. He just hoped they fitted properly.
On the floor above Brian sat on his bed and read his letter from Snape.
‘Brian,
You obviously knew what you were doing when you kissed me this evening and I’m ashamed to admit that it worked. However I’m not ashamed to admit that I would like a repeat of what happened or perhaps more. But as you are stuck in that house and I have other duties as well as the school term approaching so I can’t see how it would be physically possible at the moment. And there is also the fact that there are certain things about me that it would be wise for you to know before we engage in anything further. I do however look forward to some correspondence as you have definitely peaked my interest.
Sincerely,
Severus’
Brian smiled to himself. He need pen and some paper, so rummaging through his trunk he found his personal organiser and pen. He turned to the back of the organiser, opened the notepad and began writing.
‘Sev,
Thanks for writing. It certainly cheered me up some to know I hadn’t completely insulted you. I was worried that I had pushed you too far after what you had told me. As for me being stuck in this house, well I was under the impression that you were allowed to come and go as you pleased. Perhaps we could have dinner in my room at some point. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s all we’ve got at the moment. And as for term time approaching, I don’t know what will happen then. I’m sure though that by then I will have been moved to a new safe house, perhaps somewhere closer to you.
You said in your letter that there are things I need to know about you, well the only way I will get to know is if you tell me isn’t it.
It’s getting late and your owl is beginning to get impatient so I should probably finish writing. Hopefully I will see you soon and we can carry on this conversation in person.
Brian
PS What is your owl’s name?’
Feeling pleased with himself, Brian pulled out an extremely small envelope and placed the letter inside. He handed the letter to the owl and opened the window for it. He watched it fly away into the darkness. He wished he could go outside. He missed the fresh air. Sure he had gone out into the garden the other day, but it was infested with all types of dark creatures and he had been bitten by a few, so hadn’t went back out there again.
Deciding it was finally time to go to bed, he pulled the window shut and headed for bed. His mind was so pre-occupied with thoughts of Snape that he didn’t notice the hooded figure standing next to a lamppost. He wasn’t able to see the house, but he had seen the owl arriving and leaving from the space directly in between number eleven and number thirteen. So he knew that this must be where the Order was. Now all he had to do was wait.
