Summary: The Doctor is stuck in the rift and needs the help of his companions to help him get back out again.
Everyone stood and waited as Jack broke out Suzie’s old toolbox. He dragged it over to where they had all been sitting before and dumped it on the floor before he began to rummage through it.
“What exactly are you looking for?” Gwen asked him
“I’m not sure,” he mumbled, “I’ll know when I see it,”
“I dunno Jack,” Owen said as he swung round in his chair. He was holding John’s wrist strap, “Just how is this going to pull him out of the rift?”
Jack didn’t look up but he did answer him, “Our keys to the Tardis have a kind of energy about them, for instance they glow when the Tardis is near meaning that they are somehow connected to the heart of the Tardis itself.”
Martha frowned at that and went to interrupt Jack, but he saw her out of the corner of his eye and quickly carried on before she could say anything.
“If we can somehow connect the keys to the vortex manipulator then it should be easy enough to pull him out,”
“One problem though,” Tosh said. She had managed to locate the Doctor whilst they had all been eating and he was indeed inside what looked to be a bubble of energy and the rift was full of them. It was how Rose and Mickey had been able to teleport, they had travelled through one of the bubbles.
“What’s that?” Jack asked, looking up at her as he clenched what looked to be like a very complicated pair of pliers.
“I’ve done a simulation of what will happen when we pull the Doctor out,” she said as she turned in her seat to play the simulation. Everyone gathered round to watch, “This is the Doctor in this bubble here,” she said as she pointed to the largest bubble that was bouncing off the rest, “And to pull him out we have to burst that bubble right? Well look what happens when we do,”
Everyone stared at the monitor in confusion and somewhat surprise as all the bubbles disappeared simultaneously.
“What does that mean?” Donna asked.
“It means that the Void will close up again,” Rose said, “We’ll either be stuck here, or have to leave before we pull him out,”
Jack looked at both her and Mickey. He could tell that they would need time to go talk about it as there was a lot of conflict evident in both their eyes. Mickey reached out and took Rose’s hand, knowing that this wasn’t going to be easy for either of them.
“Right well in the mean time, we need to figure out how to do this,” Jack said as he grabbed the wristband off of Owen.
“Jack can I talk to you for a minute?” Martha asked.
“Uh, sure,” Jack said as he followed her into his office. Martha shut the door behind them as she knew he didn’t want Rose to hear this.
“Are you sure this is going to work?” she asked him.
“Why wouldn’t it?”
“It’s just, you said that the keys are connected to the heart of the Tardis, well so are you. Remember, the Doctor said Rose opened up the Heart of the Tardis and that’s what made you the way you are…”
Jack held up a hand to stop her, “I know. But look,” he said as he pulled out his key, “Not glowing. So it doesn’t really matter if I’m connected to it or not. It doesn’t…”
“Do you glow?” she asked.
“Sorry?”
“Do you glow, or can you, you know, feel it when the Tardis is near?”
Jack thought about it, “No. I don’t feel a thing,”
Martha nodded, “Okay. So long as you’re sure,”
“I am,” Jack smiled. Martha nodded and headed back out to the others. Jack watched her go for a moment. Yes he was sure that the keys wouldn’t react to him, only thing is, with Toshiko’s calculations, the keys would be sucked into the Rift a long with John’s wristband. Would he be sucked in too?

“Here, eat,” Jack said as he shoved a paper plate through the feeding hatch.
John was sat in the far corner, clearly in a sulk. He had been left here for three hours. He steadfastly ignored Jack though.
“Look, you’re not going to be in here forever,” Jack said, “I just needed you out of the way just now,”
John didn’t say anything. Just stared at the floor.
“Does anyone know you’re here?” Jack asked him.
“Why?” John asked curiously, “Worried I might get rescued?”
“Hoping more like,” Jack said as he ran a tired hand through his hair. He really didn’t know what he would do if John remained here. He would no doubt cause far more trouble than he was worth.
“If I’m going to be such a problem, why don’t you just kill me?” John asked.
Jack sighed, “Because, I’m better than you,”
John watched as Jack walked away. He stared at the food but turned his back to it. It would no doubt be poisoned again, plus he didn’t want Jack to know that he was relying on him for anything. At least this way, he still had some power over what actually happened to him.

“You want some coffee?” Ianto asked as Jack walked over to him. He was in the kitchen area making some more coffee and tea for everyone. It was going to be a long night.
“You know I love you right?” Jack said as he wrapped his arms around Ianto and buried his face in his shoulder.
Ianto pulled back and looked at him, “What’s brought this on?”
Jack looked back at him, “Am I not allowed to say I love you?”
Ianto frowned, “You’re going to go away with him again aren’t you?” he said as he pushed Jack from him.
“Ianto…”
“No, fuck off Jack,” Ianto shouted, alerting everyone to their argument before he stormed away and out of the main area of the hub.
“What was that about?” Gwen asked. She had been very over protective of Ianto since he had disappeared that first time and had threatened Jack on more than one occasion about what would happen to his genitals if he ever hurt Ianto again.
“Nothing,” Jack said before going off to find Ianto.
He was down in the furnace room again. Obviously he hadn’t thought Jack would find him here.
“I’m not going to go away with him,” he said as soon as he came into the room. Ianto was stood with his back to him.
“Then why were you acting like that?”
“I just…” Jack sighed and looked up at the ceiling, “I’m connected to the Tardis,” he said, “There’s a chance that I’ll get sucked into the rift,”
Ianto turned to stare at him in shock, “I wont let that happen,”
Jack smiled softly at that, “How?” he asked. He didn’t actually expect Ianto to answer though.
Ianto walked forward and wrapped his arms around Jack, “Toshiko isn’t the only genius here. We’re not doing this until I’ve re-calculated this. Understood?”
“Yes Sir,” Jack said with a grin, “I do love you though,”
Ianto kissed him softly, “I love you too,” he said before standing back and taking Jack’s hand, “Now, come on. I have work to do and you have coffee to make,”
