Welcome to The Bar! This is an AU, set up to house stories written in the Stargate: Atlantis "The Bar" universe created by Audrey Lynne. It started with an idea, which turned into one tale, which got out of hand from there ideawise.

The original story is titled "The Bar" and the link can be found in the intro post (tagged under "intro"). PG-13. Summary: Sure, the place was a dive, but that was part of its charm. If it had been classier, it wouldn't have been as much fun. AU in which Rodney plays piano, John at the bar is a friend of his, Teyla and Ronon run the joint, and they've got some seriously cool regulars, from diplomats to doctors to cute, scruffy engineering professors. :)

The author has been insane enough to make a claim on the Stargate 5x5 slash com--pairing: McKay/Zelenka. Since the world of The Bar gives me so many possibilities to fill the prompt, I've set my 5x5 stories there.

And, so, the cast....

Atlantis - one of Manhattan's best-kept secrets. It's a little dive of a bar tucked away in a district that houses many others. Very few know it's there, but it stays afloat thanks to the business crowd from the hotel across the street. The regulars are a small but devoted crowd--they keep coming back for the ambience and the fun.

Teyla Emmagan - She once had aspirations of being a lounge singer, but she found being a barmaid paid more and was steadier work. When Atlantis' original owner decided to sell, she and Ronon Dex pooled together their money and took a chance on it. She still helps out as a barmaid and, some nights, can be persuaded to sing when the piano heats up.

Ronon Dex - He was a barback and stock man at Atlantis until he and Teyla became its owners. He still does what he can around the place - hey, someone has to do the labor and no one ever said he was afraid of hard work. He and Teyla had dated at one time but it cooled off before they bought Atlantis - now their staff just likes to joke that they act like an old married couple as they run the place.

Rodney McKay - Once a astrophysics scholar, he gave it up when the idiocy he found in the academic world got to be too much for him to put up with. He had a masters and had been working on his PhD but he left and returned to his first love, music. Currently, he's playing piano at Atlantis and while he could be making more elsewhere, the tips are good and the company's great.

John Sheppard - A former Air Force pilot, he now tends bar at Atlantis. He resigned after an incident in Afghanistan, in which he had been forced to defy orders to save a friend. The military provided him with an option to save his career, but he left because he didn't want to be a part of an organization that would come down on him for trying to save someone's life. He misses the sky sometimes, but mostly, he's content to play bartender and sometimes therapist to the regulars. As Rodney put it once, the place is like a 21st-century Cheers.

Elizabeth "Liz" Weir - A diplomat for the UN who often finds herself running around, trying to convince different countries not to blow each other up. Her interests lie heavily in non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. She's a regular at Atlantis, coming by to escape the pressures of her job.

Carson Beckett - Rodney's best friend, a Scottish doctor who typically works the day shift at St. Luke's ER. He started showing up around Atlantis regularly after Rodney started working there and has since gotten to know the rest of the staff. He enjoys dropping by Atlantis when he can, if only to tease Rodney.

Radek Zelenka - Originally from the Czech Republic - though it was still under Soviet control when he left - he's an engineering professor at New York University and another soul who can be seen around Atlantis on a regular basis. He is quite fascinated by a certain piano player ... and it's safe to say Rodney is similarly inclined to explore a relationship.
