Standing proudly on a base reading “Golden Hurricane,” Gus T. bobblehead sports a No. 1 Tulsa football jersey while holding up a #1 sign with his right hand. The backdrop of the bobblehead features the University of Tulsa logo, encapsulating the spirit of the university’s mascot.

The University of Tulsa’s football team hasn’t always been known as the Golden Hurricane. Before adopting the current identity, the team went by names such as “The Yellow Jackets” and “Kendallites.” However, in 1922, prior to a game against Texas A&M, TU football coach Howard Archer coined the term “Golden Hurricane” in response to a sports reporter’s inquiry about the team’s name. Since then, the name has stuck, symbolizing the strength and resilience of TU athletics.

Gus T. made his debut as the official Golden Hurricane mascot in August 2003 during the football home opener. As a nod to TU tradition, Gus T., alongside the freshman class, led the team onto the field in the “Freshmen Storm.” With his muscular physique and a smile topped by a hurricane head, Gus T. bobblehead was chosen through a fan vote to replace the former mascot, Captain Cane. Since then, he has been a fan favorite and a proud symbol of Tulsa pride.

Phil Sklar, co-founder and CEO of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, shared his excitement about the launch: “We’re excited to unveil this new Tulsa Golden Hurricane Gus T. bobblehead in conjunction with the start of the new school year. This bobblehead will be the perfect way for Tulsa fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school pride!”

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public in 2019. Along with housing an extensive collection of bobbleheads, the museum produces high-quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale and for organizations, individuals, and teams nationwide.

Fans and collectors can secure their Gus T. bobblehead now by visiting the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s online store. With only 2,024 available, this limited-edition collectible is sure to be a popular item for Tulsa supporters.

Last year, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the first HBCU Bobblehead Series, which features officially licensed bobbleheads of 13 Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
