Nurse-led hepatitis health promotion (HHP) may be one strategy to decrease alcohol use in this population. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led HHP, delivered by nurses compared to motivational interviewing (MI), delivered by trained therapists in group sessions or one-on-one on reduction of alcohol use. A three-arm randomized, controlled trial, conducted with 256 MM adults attending one of five MM outpatient clinics in the Los Angeles area. Within each site, moderate-to-heavy alcohol-using MM participants were randomized into one of three conditions: (1) nurse-led hepatitis health promotion group sessions (n=87); (2) MI delivered in group sessions (MI-group; n=79), or (3) MI delivered one-on-one sessions (MI-single, n=90). Self-reported alcohol use was reduced from a median of 90 drinks/month at baseline to 60 drinks/month at 6-month follow-up. A Wilc...

The scientific community has responded with a sizable level of research and publications, many of which are beginning to be identified and analyzed in systematic reviews of the literature and bibliometric studies. No readily identifiable, comparable study focused on Latin American scientific literature has been undertaken thus far. Therefore, this article analyzes such literature, focused on COVID-19, and one that has been published in the scientific journals of the region. A search with the keyword “COVID-19” in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) database resulted in the identification of 261 documents. Following PRISMA guidelines, the total number was reduced to 117 for the
purpose of the bibliometric analysis (i.e., elimination of preprint duplicates). Such analysis resulted in the following findings: 69 publications were editorial or individual commentaries, and 48 were original articles. The male authors totaled 280, contrasted with 169 female authors. Two Brazilian journals led in the number of
publications: Cadernos de Saúde Pública and Clinics. Even though the Latin American scientific productivity regarding COVID-19 is not well represented in the different databases of the region, it is expected that these scientific publications will achieve increased visibility in the coming months. The article emphasizes the importance of systematic and bibliographic reviews of the scientific literature in Latin America in order to evaluate the public health achievements of the region.

We first present a brief historical overview to situate the present status of the field of psychology within the broad STS arena. We then describe the influence of STS studies in the field of history of psychology through a literature review that emphasizes Ibero-American productions in these areas. Our findings suggest that STS studies can contribute to the understanding the historical issues in psychology through seven areas of intersecting sociological and historical research, which involve the study of psychological objects, the history of psychological instrumentation, the historical analysis of psychology as a discipline and the study of psychology teaching and education, among others. The paper concludes that STS studies play an important role in advancing the production of historical knowledge, shedding light on the conceptual frameworks used in historical research, clarifying historical inquires, and assisting in the process to define psychological epistemic objects.

Correlations between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and quality of life (QOL) were investigated with (N = 109) females, ages 18–62 years old and sex trafficked as youth or adults in the United States. Recruitment occurred using random and snowball sampling from sexual-assault agencies in the United States. The PTG and QOL inventories were used to collect data and a Pearson’s r analysis was conducted to test the correlation between PTG and QOL. Results indicated a weak correlation r(.253) = .008, p < .01 between variables. Multiple regression analysis revealed Personal Strength (R2 = .067, p < .01, β = 0.259), Appreciation of Life (R2 = .067, p < .01, β = 0.258), and New Possibilities (R2 = .049, p < .05, β = 0.221) as the most significant PTG predictors of QOL. Pearson’s r analysis of the QOL life domains indicated that Creativity, r(.256) = .007, p < .01, and Help r
(.250) = .009, p < .01, were significant PTG outcomes. The study indicated a weak yet positive correlation between PTG and QOL.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether graduate students’ ethnic identity and other-group orientation scores, as measured by the Multi-Group Ethnic Identity Questionnaire (Gaines, Bunce, Robertson, & Wright, 2010), were associated with their comfort with sharing their ethnicities in an online environment. The sample was comprised of 287 psychology online graduate students at a professional psychology academic institution. European-American participants were significantly less comfortable disclosing their ethnicity than Hispanic or Latino participants. In addition, a significant positive relationship was found between feeling a strong attachment toward one’s own ethnic group and feeling comfortable disclosing one’s ethnicity in an online learning environment. Based on these findings, it seems that online graduate students’ identifying more strongly with their own ethnic groups may potentially increase their level of comfort and likelihood of self-disclosing their ethnicities, which may result in a transparent and open online learning community.

Method: One hundred and ninety one adult patients who sought alcohol treatment in 2002 were reassessed in 2007 regarding alcohol use and involvement with crime. The interview consisted of demographic questions and questionnaires assessing alcohol dependence and pattern of alcohol use. Risk and protective factors and involvement with crime were further explored. RESULTS High mortality rate (16.9%, n = 41) was found in this sample and 97.4% were identified as being severe alcohol dependents. The sample consisted of a homogeneous group, average age of 42, 81.9% male, 57.5% black, 52.2% unemployed and 100% of low socioeconomic status. Individuals ageing 35 or younger, not engaged in religious activities and with intense alcohol consumption in the last month had 2.7 times more chance on committing crimes (95% CI = [1.22; 5.93] p = 0.014). Subjects who consumed alcohol in the last month also had a 4.1 greater chance of becoming involved in crime (95% CI = [1.2; 14.24] p = 0.024).
Conclusion: Alcohol dependence within an underprivileged community was associated with high rates of crime and mortality. Religious affiliation was negatively associated with delinquent behavior.

This study examined a range of mortality indicators within a cohort of 131 crack/cocaine-dependent patients admitted into treatment and meeting criteria for dependence of crack (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). After 12 years of treatment discharge, 107 individuals were reassessed and 27 death cases were confirmed by official records, wherein in its majority were caused by homicide (n = 16). In this group, survival rate was 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.74-0.81) and previous history of IV cocaine use was identified as a predictor of mortality (2.5, 95% CI = 1.08-5.79). High mortality rates among Brazilian crack/cocaine-dependent patients, exposure to violence, and HIV/AIDS were topics discussed in this study. This research highlights the importance of ongoing programs to manage crack/cocaine use along with other treatment features within this population.

The current study sought to examine the prevalence of gambling problems among a sample of casino patrons and examine alcohol and tobacco use, health status, and quality of life by gambling problem status. To these ends, 176 casino patrons were recruited by going to a Southern California casino and requesting that they complete an anonymous survey. Results indicated the following lifetime rates for at-risk, problem, and pathological gambling: 29.2, 10.7, and 29.8%. Differences were found with regards to gambling behavior, and results indicated higher rates of smoking among individuals with gambling problems, but not higher rates of alcohol use. Self-rated quality of life was lower among pathological gamblers relative to non-problem gamblers, but did not differ from at-risk or problem gamblers. Although subject to some limitations, our data support the notion of higher frequency of gambling problems among casino patrons and may suggest the need for increased interventions for gambling problems on-site at casinos.

high risk for HIV and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Nurse-led Hepatitis Health Promotion
(HHP) may be one strategy to decrease alcohol use in this population.
Objective—To evaluate the impact of nurse-led HHP, delivered by nurses compared to
Motivational Interviewing (MI), delivered by trained therapists in group sessions or one-on-one on
reduction of alcohol use.
Methods—A three-arm randomized, controlled trial, conducted with 256 MM adults attending
one of five MM outpatient clinics in the Los Angeles area. Within each site, moderate-to-heavy
alcohol-using MM participants were randomized into one of three conditions: 1) nurse-led
hepatitis health promotion group sessions (n=87); 2) MI delivered in group sessions (MI-group;
n=90), or 3) MI delivered one-on-one sessions (MI-single, n=79).
Results—Self-reported alcohol use was reduced from a median of 90 drinks/month at baseline to
60 drinks/month at six month follow-up. A Wilcoxon sign-rank test indicated a significant
reduction in alcohol use in the total sample (p < .05). In multiple logistic regression analysis
controlling for alcohol consumption at baseline and other covariates, no differences by condition
were found.
Discussion—As compared to two programs delivered by MI specialists, a culturally-sensitive
and easy to implement nurse-led HHP program produced similar reductions in alcohol use over six
months. Employing nurse-led programs may allow cost savings for treatment programs as well as
a greater integration of alcohol reduction counseling along with a more comprehensive focus on
general health-related issues than previously conducted.

The study was derived from baseline data collected for a longitudinal trial assessing the effect of motivational interviewing among alcohol-abusing adults undergoing MMT. The sample included clients who were 18-55 years of age, abusing alcohol, and receiving MMT from five large methadone maintenance clinics in the Los Angeles area. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Correlates of hospitalization in logistic regression analysis included lack of social support, recent victimization, age of first alcohol use, chronic severe pain in the previous 6 months, not having children, and ethnicity. Identification of hospitalization risk factors among alcohol-abusing MMT clients is a first step to developing risk-reducing interventions designed to lower hospitalization rates in this population.

A qualitative design using semi-structured focus groups was used to obtain the perspectives of 41 methadone-maintained clients in Los Angeles, California. Sessions were recorded, transcribed, and content-analyzed. Attitudes of health care providers were considered critical factors for engaging clients in treatment programs. Other facilitators included incentives and forms of support (emotional, financial, or material aid), whereas barriers consisted of lack of provider knowledge and insensitivity to acquiring needed resources. Clients also discussed the importance of personal attributes in achieving successful behavioral change, such as personal motivation. The findings suggest that healthcare providers' strategies designed to boost motivation, combined with various types of support, may prove successful in alcohol reduction among methadone-maintained clients.

Lack of primary care providers, limited access to health care facilities and access barriers were pervasive. Focus group participants expressed a desire for nonjudgemental and empathetic care that would foster respect and facilitate help-seeking behaviors through a comprehensive support system. The need to design culturally relevant training programs was evident which included an integration of treatment, communication and societal issues.

Subjects self-rated their cravings using the Weiss Craving Scale (WCS) and the Pennsylvania Craving Scale (PCS). Subjects answered a semi-structured interview, the Positive and Negative Affect Scale Extended Form (PANAS-X), and the Social Adjustment Scale (SAS-SR). Gamblers had higher scores on craving measures. Regression models showed that craving for gambling and alcohol have a significant correlation with emotional states. Craving for gambling was inversely correlated with positive affect and craving for alcohol was directly correlated with negative affect. Gambling craving was more dependent upon external factors and related to an unpleasant dearousing state, while alcohol craving was associated with an unpleasant arousing state. These findings point to the key role of emotional deregulation on gambling and alcohol cravings following early abstinence.

Secondary goals included assessing the impact of "work status," "family relationship," "leisure," and "enrolment in Gamblers Anonymous (GA)" on gambling (all items from the scale), together with the impact of treatment.
Method: Using the GFS, 3 independent raters interviewed gamblers under treatment. The sample was collected in 2 university centres in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Patients attended psychotherapy coupled with psychiatric follow-up, participation in GA, or both.
Results: We interviewed 47 pathological gamblers; 13 were interviewed twice, with a minimum interval of 6 months, for a total of 60 GFS interviews. Interviews took on average 6.0 minutes, SD 2.7. Interrater concordance ranged from 82% to 95% (intraclass correlation coefficient range 0.85 to 0.99, P < 0.001). A factorial analysis showed a 1-factor solution (Eigenvalue = 2.4, 47.6% of total variance accounted). "Leisure," "frequency and time gambling," and "family relationship" showed considerable loadings (0.84; 0.71; 0.71),whereas "enrolment in GA" and "work status" showed moderate loadings (0.59; 0.56). A linear regression model significantly correlated gambling (R2 = 0.356; P < 0.001) with "leisure" and length of treatment. Treatment modalities affected "leisure" (F2,43 = 5.00, P = 0.011), with GA attendees reporting more regular and gratifying activities.
Conclusions: The GFS showed interrater reliability and construct validity. More leisure and lengthier treatment were significantly relAted to less gambling. GA enrolment seemed to particularly benefit the quality of leisure. Future studies could profit from the quickness and simple structure of the GFS in providing shareable outcome measures.
Impact of Organizational Trauma on Workplace Behavior and Performance (pp. 188-220), 2017
The global progression of human rights advocating for marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ,... more The global progression of human rights advocating for marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ, has seen tremendous change over the past several decades, including the conditions for disclosure of sexual identity in the workplace. The decision-making process of disclosure and the necessity for others to know is key to understanding how best to support and address the potential organizational trauma that may result. Not all disclosure of minority identity is negative and the availability of positive policy development within organizations can assist in smooth transitions toward more equal inclusion and dispel previous heteronormative and heterosexist ideologies. Through increased knowledge about the LGBTQ community and case analysis, a cross cultural lens will be utilized from Brazil, Turkey and the U.S.; prominent sexual identity disclosure perspectives for numerous occupations, as well as recommendations for systemic awareness and change will be offered.
