DragonCon [Jun. 20th, 2011|02:26 pm]The Heralds of Valdemar
I noticed that Mercedes Lackey is planning on being at DragonCon this year. She was there last year as well, with Larry Dixon, and she was lovely to meet. Last year she had a panel on her Secret Wars books, which aren't Valdemar; I don't know what she'll do this year. Any one planning on going?

new Diana Tregarde story [Oct. 19th, 2010|03:14 am]The Heralds of Valdemar
Misty really needs to *not* say she'll never write a particular character again, because Di Tregarde is back in action, though the description of the short story/novelette suggests it might be a prequel to the original trilogy.Trio of Sorcery - Amazon Link

Lackey in the Social Web [Jul. 26th, 2010|10:02 pm]The Heralds of Valdemar
As an FYI, Mercedes Lackey now has an official Facebook page and a Twitter account. It looks like she'll also have a blog on her website in the future. The Facebook page in particular is worth checking out for some tidbits of information on her upcoming words (like an excerpt from Intrigues and a tease about her new Elemental Masters book).

It seems that a tabletop rpg based on Valdemar has been licensed. I am currently nosing about other rpg fora for more information.(the rpg.net thread derails before long, but the crucial information is there in the first post.)A curious development, if it pans out ...

The Obsidian Trilogy et al [May. 17th, 2009|04:56 pm]The Heralds of Valdemar
Has anyone else had difficulty reading/enjoying the Obsidian Mountain books? I'm part way through the third book and I'm finding it really, really boring. I don't know if it has anything to do with the hard to pronounce/read names of everything or whether it's the story itself. Anyone else want to comment?

Change in Policy [May. 11th, 2009|11:28 am]The Heralds of Valdemar
[**Current Mood** |sleepysleepy]As perkyrusalka pointed out in their recent post, it appears that Mercedes Lackey's policy regarding fanfiction has changed quite dramatically and for the better. Directly quoted from her site:"As a result of this, I am happy to announce that we are officially permitting fanfiction to be licensed as derivative fiction under the Creative Commons umbrella. What this means is: NO, you cannot make money on it. NO, you cannot self-publish a fanfiction novel of Valdemar (or any of my other stuff) and try and sell it on Amazon. And NO, I still am not going to read it, because I am already so far behind on my research reading I barely have time to read that. But YES, you may write and post away, folks, so long as you license it as derivative and under Creative Commons. If it is anything other than PG-13, please take all the proper precautions to stick it somewhere that innocent souls won't be corrupted. Do not scare the children or the horses. Have fun!"Source: http://www.mercedeslackey.com/news.htmlEdited to include the following, as there was some discussion:**What is a derivative work?**A derivative work is a work that is based on another work but is not an exact, verbatim copy. What this means exactly and comprehensively is the subject of many law journal articles and much debate and pontification. In general, a translation from one language to another or a film version of a book are examples of derivative works. Under Creative Commons’ core licenses, synching music in timed-relation with a moving image is considered to be a derivative work. It's important to note, however, that the Creative Commons licenses allow the user to exercise the rights permitted under the license in any format or media, even in the NoDerivatives licenses. This means that, under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license, for example, you can copy the work from a digital file to a print file consistent with the terms of that license. Source: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/FAQ#What_is_a_derivative_work.3F---With the change to Misty's policy, so ours will change as well. Fanfiction -will- be allowed on thechosen provided it follows certain restrictions, which are as follows:* All fanfiction must contain a disclaimer, citing Mercedes Lackey as the author and creator of the world of Velgarth, and of her original characters. * Fanfiction posted on the community must be LJ-cut for length after the first 2 paragraphs' preview. * Fanfiction must not exceed a rating of PG-13. What this means is that I don't really want to see excessive descriptions of blood, guts, gore or gnitty gritty sex scenes. The original novels contain elements of all of these things, but never to what I'd call as disgustingly graphic. I'd like the fanfiction posted on this community to adhere to a similiar policy. If you don't think Misty would include it in her novel, it probably doesn't belong here. At the moment, those are the only three real big things that I could think of. Accepting suggestions for any other policies regarding fanfiction being posting on the community. Thanks again to perkyrusalka for pointing this out.PS: Apparently, the community description was never changed originally from disallowing fanfics, and still said in one of the opening lines, "this community was made to share fanfics and fanart." I find this mildly amusing that it's been like that for years.

Regarding fan fic? [May. 10th, 2009|09:19 pm]The Heralds of Valdemar
Some time ago, there was a post on this community about Mercedes Lackey fanfic. I just noticed a post on her website, here-apparently her publishers have relaxed the rules on it considerably. Looks like her new policy is it's okay so long as "you license it as derivative and under Creative Commons." So, I'm wondering-anybody know anything about this "Creative Commons" business? Is it really as simple as registering on their website?(Note-I realize it's the policy of this community not to allow posted fanfic. I'm not suggesting a change to that or anything. I'm just curious about the implications. And, quite frankly, reacting to the new policy with a 'too good to be true' feeling.)
