John Irving (original) (raw)
I recently just finished reading "The Cider House Rules" by John Irving.
Before that I also read "A Widow for One Year"
My reviews and descriptions are under the cut.
I decided to read "The Cider House Rules" before I see the movie. After reading the book, I don't know if the movie can do it justice. It is about a doctor who runs an orphanage and also performs abortions. The story then follows one of the orphans as he moves to an apple picking farm and develops a life there.
The thing I liked most about the book was the abortion aspect. It seemed to be a common denominator in many of the relationships in the book which I found intriguing. All in all a good book. Right after I finished reading it, I had a dream about it and I was quite sad because I'm done reading it now and I wish I could just keep reading a continuing story about all the characters in the book.
I first saw the movie "The Door in the Floor" and then read the book "A Widow for One Year" which is in three parts. The first part is the part that the movie is based off of. I loved this book. It follows a writer, his soon to be ex wife and their daughter. They also had two sons but they were killed in an accident, so much of the book relates back to the relationship that they had with their sons. Also, the writer hired an assistant one summer (in the first part of the book) who is another constant character in the book.
The movie follows very closely with the first section of the book, so I liked that.
I'm not very good at writing reviews because I don't want to give away the whole story but I want you to get the gist of it. Hope I did a good job!
